Review: Bad Taste, despite their name, are one of the most tasteful labels in the game and their furious take on neurofunk inflected drum & bass is still absolutely brilliant. That's what their displaying with their 2020 annual and they've brought through some of their best performing acts to do the job. Malux returns with a VIP of his much loved 'Turbine' and he's rolled things out on this one, adding a few extra inches to the percussion but keeping those iconic stabs in a powerful display of dancefloor energy. Kursiva makes several appearances and 'Nasty' is the best of the lot, as a Break-esque drum line rollicks through the arrangement like a steam train. Big LP.
Review: Can we get a 'wicked?' Jungle Cakes continue to team up with some of the biggest donnies in the game with this latest Welcome To The Jungle collection. This time curated and fronted by the General himself, as you'd expect this is a full-on jungle assault that covers every single angle and every single era. 47 tracks and one killer mix, hosted and toasted by Levy himself, this is one of Jungle Cakes most comprehensive collections to date: From the foundation-setting, historic vibes of "Incredible" through to contemporary bangers from the likes of Kursiva, DJ Hybrid, Jam Thieves, Benny Page and all things in between, everyone involved has delivered something special. Massive.
Review: From Span with love: South Yard one-up the dickens out their game with their first V/A album. 21 tracks heavy and packed with every skanky, bashy and rolling shade of jungle they've become known for during their three year rise so far. All the mandem present and correct, the likes of Veak, Vital Elements, RMS, Jamie Bostron and many more all join Kursiva for this major league brock-out with savage highlights hanging, swinging and leaping from every corner. Highlights include the flabby bass groans of T.Kay's "Oh! Dread", Kid Mix-A-Lot's euphoric dibby dibby dancefloor smasher "The Stopper" and Ricky Tuff & Brian Brainstorms teeth-baring tear-up "Las Teresitas". Adios amigos!
Review: Mexico b2b Spain b2b London: Isaac Maya, Kursiva and Lady Chann collide for a sunny-side skank-out Run Tingz style. Big hooks, emphatic vocals, driving beats and hammonds from here to Land's End; fusions of reggae and drum & bass don't get much slicker and more soulful. Remix-wise the Run Tingz Cru and Breakah Dirty add a little grimey murk, demonic bass tones and a sharp jungle drumset for the darker hours of the night. Mash it up!
Review: 39 tracks, 10 FX sounds and a full mix. This isn't any old slice of afternoon cake you might share your elderly neighbour or distant relative, this is a seven-tiered wedding cake full of every type of unhealthy, fattening ingredient you can imagine. And we're not stopping until we've chowed the lot. If you've feasted on Deekline and Solo's Jungle Cakes before then you'll already know how tasty this is; a selection of their own releases and similarly spirited cuts from the scene, all laced with dubwise, dancehall and skank-soaked soul. Highlights hang from every corner but you'd be mad not to peak at Aries & Gold's soul-flecked massage of Mr Benn, or Dominator & Logan D's brokeback bust-up "Cowboy" or Serial Killaz' savage repurposing of Freestyler's iconic "Entertainer". High calorie badness.
Review: Ah yes! More smoked-out drum and bass runnings from the one like Kursiva, and this time he's brought along Jahba and Clasiko to take care of the vocal front. As per usual, "High Vibes" combines the heart of both jungle and reggae, where seductive lyrics meet choppy jungle breaks and waves of blazing delay on the melodies. The remix duties are picked up by Terrahawk who focuses more on speeding up the beat twists in something of a dub version. Gnarly.
