Review: This is a big compilation for Bass Legion, featuring the likes of Dutta and MISSREPRESENT on a five-track exploration of jump up D&B. Dutta is the ideal man to kick off proceedings, Purple Punch's raucous opening drums proving just that before a simple but menacingly deceived melody pumps in through undertones of synth weight. Enta's Levitate carries on the charge; eerie and unforgiving, its snarling tendrils of synth extend out into a steppy percussive line. L3mmy Dubz brings Dissonant Oscillations to the table, another eerie number that builds suspense with a cool sci-fi feel, before flipping into package of naughty distortion which effortlessly injects a feeling of movement and travel. Control is equally as pacey, MISSREPRESENT opting for a techier sound that balances out the release well, Mefjus-esque bass notes flicking each drum hit further towards the next drop. Ignite is last but not least, a piece of glitchy jump-up which perfectly balances long and short notes to add in a. bit of last minute funk that lays out beautifully over a thudding kick drum. Get this one, quick.
Review: Cre8 Dnb Music are one of the most prolific jump-up labels around. We regularly feature their releases and they almost always smash it out of the park, this time being no different. Part Of Me is a fiery EP that epitomizes the type of jump-up, but also slightly different flavours as well, that, in more ways than one, has defined D&B over the past couple of years - no-nonsense, uncompromising and proudly nonchalant about what you think. It's just pure attitude, dancefloor- based music at its best and music that simply does what it wants, there's no pretentiousness or image-orientated concerns - it's just D&B. Big, big tunes.
Review: L3mmy Dubz has developed a bit of a reputation over the past couple of years for his outlandish approach to making jump-up that sounds, well, bloody insane. He never holds back but this release on Cre8 DnB Music is actually somewhat more restrained, with L3mmy experimenting with a few different styles and textures. 'Komorebi' is interesting, with hypnotic stabs making up the main arrangement in a stripped back roller. Check these out to hear something slightly different.
Review: L3mmy Dubz is an artist who you've probably been seeing more and more of recently, as his own distinct brand of jump-up is starting to garner attention and turn heads. Aeon is the latest instalment of that journey, a four-tracker that hits hard and doesn't any prisoners - not even useful ones. This is exemplified best by the title track, which just goes, any time you think it's going to break down it just comes back bigger and better. 'Happy Pills' will certainly make you want to take some, a grating mash of pure energy that's matched in the subtlety of 'Hunted', which takes things down in terms of loudness but up in terms of sophistication and production value. Finishing off with 'Neurostar' and boy, what a finish, as glitching, techy stabs rattle all over the place and shove you along with them. Sick EP.
Review: Middlesbrough murk maestro L3mmy Dubz continues his rich vein of wonky form on Reload with this full-strength five tracker. Tripped out funk comes in generous helpings on the likes of "Jupiter" and "Heat Ray" where the strange glitches and off-beat fills create momentum. Sheer sci-fi drama is conjured on the paranoid arpeggiated "Killer Bite" and soaring heat-seeker "Empire" while the riff on "Attention" buzzes and rattles with unforgettable high end friction. Powerful sounds from a fast-rising future star.
Review: Pick any of the most exciting new-gen names in D&B and we bet our bottom dollar they're repping in this collection. A debut V/A from Hedex's By The Producer brand, Collected 1 is bulging with the seams with fresh talent: Hexa, Disrupta, Dreadnought, Stokka, Klay, Bruk, the list goes on. With cameos from more established Gs like Total Recall and Jam Thieves - and a deep, rumbling, futuristic contemporary mood and sound running throughout - this captures 2020 in drum & bass perfect. Agitated, dark, moody, but hungry for a better future... And not afraid to have a little fun. One of the best V/As we've seen in a long time. Get collecting.
