Review: Mexican artist La Guardia De La Luz continues to notch up releases on much-loved labels, with this outing on Boite Music following well-regarded EPs for Rare Wiri, Hell Yeah and Paper Recordings. The headline attraction is undoubtedly title track 'Teleport', a near ten-minute slab of ear-pleasing aural colour that adds jaunty organ stabs, intergalactic ambient chords, deep space melodies and swirling electronics to a head-nodding, hip-hop style downtempo beat. The producer's interest in the star-gazing end of ambient and Balearica continues on '3D25D (The Prophet-Earth's Bifurication)', while 'Antennae' is a hypnotic, locked-in chugger rich in spacey electronic. On 'Buen Viaje' the Mexican cannily blurs the boundaries between bleeping deep house and shuffling Balearic nu-disco, hefore 'Gamma/Ghost Heart' gently brings us back down to earth via gaseous chords, delay-laden melodies and enveloping ambient textures.

Review: With Hell Yeah out of Italy now basing themselves in Berlin and chasing that imaginary Balearic sun - this Buena Onda Balearic Beats 2021 compilation sees the label deliver a bevvy of unreleased tunes and remixes. With global content coming from the likes of Australian producer Kayroy (who appeared on the label in 2020 with his Imaginary Expeditions EP) - hooking up with Jaspar Robinson in the star-strung "Satellite - you'll find warm and percussive synth remixes from Max Essa alongside some loose joints from The Mechanical Man. Also catch Chris Coco & Micko Roche's undeniable "What Is Love" (that guitar, those pipes) next to the percussive, broken beat and vocoded sounds of "The Healing Place" by Relative. Hell Yeah - get to know.

Review: Volume 7 in the series but for once we can't really say "you should know what to expect by now" because what this compilation really goes to show is just what an eclectic and diverse camp the long-running Manchester label has become, with tracks on 'Paper Cuts #7' ranging from the near-ambient Balearica of Aniso Tropics' opener 'Apricot Memorex' to the self-explanatory synth-y stylings of La Guardia de la Luz's 'Trance Aleman de los 90s' via the uptempo strut of Jahn Solo's 'Disco'. So all we can really do is point you in the direction of some standout cuts, which for this reviewer would include D.S.D's luscious 'Just Can't Stop' and Benny Pitcher's 'Transatlantic Motion', which is like a little musical nod to the days when Paper comps were called 'Splinter'.

Review: Draw a line from boogie to Balearica, via Italo disco and deep house, and somewhere along that arc you'll find this latest V/A collection from Manchester's long-running Paper Recordings. Crazy P have been in the Paper camp since the early days so are a fitting choice to open proceedings with the gloriously hazy 'Last Knockers', after which other standouts for yours truly include the slow-building, prog-leaning acid of Anisto Tropics' 'Topaz', Natasha Kitty Katt's typically infectious remix of Diskobeistet's 'Gammal Morro' and the sunny, summery disco-house of Benny Pitcher's 'Transatlantic Motion', until finally MADe's 'You're The One' plays us out on a mellower, more downtempo note.

Review: Kenny Hawkes' legendary Paper Recordings imprint is still going. One of the greats and true originals of UK deep house with an unashamed nod to the classic sounds of the USA, particularly Chicago. La Guardia De La Luz previously released on the label in 2014 with the great Resonate EP so its good to hear Mexican Santiago Rionda back in the studio. "Surface" is summery, sultry and dreamy; you could imagine this being played at an All Day I Dream party. "Sol" is more on the vibe you'd expect from the label on this jazzy and soulful deep house jam but still retains his knack for atmospherics. The bassline on this one is fat too, by the way! Finally "Post Junk Libido" is not just contender for best track title of the year, it's a luscious and smooth slow-mo jam that makes you feel like you're relaxing in a hammock on a summer island.. Review: Clocking it at just under 2.5 hours long, you certainly can't fault this Rare Wiri year-end label comp on the value for money front! With 23 tracks on offer there's no room here to go into them all individually, and you probably have a pretty good idea of the label's particular electronic, 80s-leaning flavour of nu-disco anyway. Suffice to say, then, that Rare Wiri's many existing fans will be more than satisfied while newbies - if there are any left! - should start with AINZ's chunky, sleazy 'Hangover', the Italo strut of From Beyond's 'Non Analogue', MR Gee's throbbing 'Gravity', Rune Lindbaek's sci-fi refix of Ilya Santana's 'Cosmos Rising' or, a personal fave, Kelton Prime's 'Disco Arpeggio', wherein nu-disco meets garage vox...

Review: If you like your disco on the epic, electronic and slightly more experimental side, this new EP from Mexico's La Guardia de la Luz is worth investigating. 'Danza Planetaria' is a chunky, midtempo affair whose fat, squelchy bassline underpins all manner of FX and synth squiggles, while 'Wingmaker' is a more contemplative cut that shifts through several moods as it progresses. The ambient-leaning 'Starseed' then throws us something of curveball before 'Pista Da Baile' takes us down a slightly darker, moodier path that leads to the 11-minute 'Le Lieu De Banheur' - one to reach for during those 4am excursions into wonkier territory.

Review: Mexico's La Guardia De La Luz has racked up releases on labels including Hell Yeah and Paper, and now he comes to Rare Wiri with a veritable smorgasbord of musical delights. 'Better Daze' kicks us off in moody, midtempo electronica territory with its ponderous bass and 'SAW'-like vocal, before label boss Rayko gives it a far more floor-friendly makeover. 'Forest Television' itself centres around a b-line that if not actually sampled from Talking Heads' 'Once In A Lifetime' certainly owes it a debt of inspiration, and comes in drifty, understated Original and far struttier Ainz Remix forms, while the Balearically-inclined 'Alma' completes the EP.
