Review: Masterworks Music's latest thoroughly enjoyable EP is a collaborative affair. It sees sometime Midnight Riot artist Ladies On Mars join forces with fellow Beunos Aries resident Gus Fastuca for the very first time. The pair first offers up two versions of "Moody Boody": a rubbery, P-funk flavoured original version built around elastic synth parts, sweet female backing vocals and bustling bass guitar, and a chunkier "Club Mix" that features a tougher, Italo-influenced groove. Elsewhere, "My Baby" is a rugged romp through guitar-sporting disco-funk re-edit territory and "Party People" cleverly combines samples from an early '80s disco-funk cut and a thunderous new, Girorgio Moroder style groove.
Review: Confusingly, Ladies On Mars isn't a collective of disco-loving Martian producers, but rather one chap from Argentina: Boom Zwapp Records founder Jonathan Braverman. He's released on a lot of labels over the years, but "Boogie On Time" marks his first outing on Midnight Riot. He begins with the title track, a heavily compressed chunk of celebratory disco-house cheeriness, before applying his trademark filter tracks to a punchier and more orchestral disco cut on "Ready To Go". Arguably even better is the sleazy, arpeggio-powered pump of EP standout "Sex Fantastic", while sparkling closing cut "Sexy Dancer" offers up an on-point revision of an electro-funk era disco workout.
Review: Three solid nu-disco/disco-house jams here from Ladies On Mars, possibly the most inaccurately named artist in history as there's only one of him, he's definitely not a lady and he actually comes from Buenos Aires, not Mars! 'Just Enough' is a pleasant disco-house roller with a gospel-leaning chorus and a Hed Kandi-ish feel overall, while 'You'll Be Mine' has a more authentic early 80s boogie vibe. The standout for this reviewer though is 'Ain't Too Proud', which tops a jaunty, plinky-plonk rhythm with a big, blues-y male soul vocal from the Cee Lo Green/Aloe Blacc school of thought - peaktime singalong action will doubtless ensue.
