Review: Local Talk has always been good at offering up themed compilations showcasing different aspects of the label's output. The latest, as the title suggests, offers up some seriously good nuggets - mostly made in recent times - that draw huge inspiration from house music of the 1990s. There's much to admire throughout the 12 tracks on show, from the undulating TB-303 bass, sparkling piano motifs and glassy-eyed pads of Deymare's '1990' and Gerd's terrific 'Deep Mix' of Mateo & Matos's Masters at Work tribute 'Maw Basics', to the organ-rich roll of Terrence Parker's 'Unconditional' and the breakbeat-driven deep house funkiness of Kiko Navarro's 'Dope High'. Kyodai's 'Breaking (90s Dub)', a mid-90s NYC meets New Jersey style gem, and S3A's breathless 'Sleepness 909', are also superb.

Review: Those who like musically expansive, jazz-funk influenced deep house loveliness should already be aware of Thomas Laroye's slim but impressive catalogue, which includes notable outings on Freerange and Atjazz Record Co. Here the French producer delivers his debut album, an inspired eight-track set that perfectly encapsulates the summery, sun-soaked excellence of his work. Expect soulful songs, broken house beats, kaleidoscopic jazz-funk and boogie synths, mazy instrumental solos and audible references to classic U.S garage and New Jersey house. Highlights include (but are in no way limited to) Javontte hook-up 'Let It Go', the shuffling samba-house flex of 'People Out There', the Kaidi Tatham-esque 'Grateful' and the synth solo-sporting heaviness of 'Get Down (The Moonfunk Dub)'.

Dance Or Buy
Dance Or Buy (main mix) - (5:44) 120 BPM
Dance Or Buy (6Am dub) - (5:44) 120 BPM
Dance Or Buy (Brs remix) - (6:30) 120 BPM Hot
Review: Sheer quality here from Situationism as they bring us a track aimed straight at underground house floors: 'Dance Or Buy' is about as likely to get played on daytime radio as Lichtenstein are to win the next FIFA World Cup, but if you're someone whose musical vocabulary can stretch to encompass Blaze's 'My Beat', Larry Heard's 'Washing Machine' AND Mutabaruka's 'Dis Poem' then trust us, you need to be adding this to your collection forthwith. Remix-wise you've got a throbbier 6AM Dub and a slightly more light 'n' airy BRS Remix to choose from, but the three don't vary hugely and any one of 'em will get knowledgeable floors moving for sure.

Potion For Love EP
Potion For Love (Never Give It Up) (original mix) - (7:53) 118 BPM Hot
Potion For Love (L.A. Spacefunk dub) - (5:26) 120 BPM
Review: L'Aroye is Thomas Arroyo, a DJ and producer from Paris who is now living in Brighton. He's had some releases previously for the likes of Visions Inc., Tiff's Joints and Magic Black. He is back for another appearance on Mad Mats & Tooli's ever reliable Local Talk imprint with this one titled "Keep On" featuring two tracks that go down separate paths. The deep, evocative and altogether spiritual energy of the title track captures the very best elements of legends such as Kerri Chandler or Ron Trent, while the 6 A.M dub mix is a worthy addition too. On this version he streamline the groove for DJ use in fine fashion.

Be The Change (feat Carlos Mena - Moody dub) - (4:44) 123 BPM
Review: 18 months ago, Thomas Arroyo AKA Laroye delivered one of the strongest singles to date on Alex Attias's Visions Inc imprint, a double A-side affair full of spiritual intent, layered melodic elements and deliciously intricate instrumentation. Here he brings his brand of grown-up, mood enhancing house music to Freerange for the very first time. The headline attraction is 'Be The Change', a percussion-laden chunk of samba-soaked cosmic house positivity laden with life-affirming chords, colourful synth solos, glistening guitars and inspirational lead vocals courtesy of Carlos Mena. It comes backed with a variety of alternate takes and DJ tools - including a drum-heavy 'Percapella' and the deep and lovely 'Moody Dub' - as well as jaunty and jazzy bonus deep house workout 'Twisted'.

2Up2Down Vol 1
Laroye - "Best Girlfriends" (Soulful mix) - (6:31) 123 BPM
BRS - "Chance Not Choice" - (6:29) 118 BPM
Laroye - "Best Girlfriends" (dub mix) - (6:15) 123 BPM
BRS - "Chance Not Choice" (Frank Situation remix) - (4:34) 120 BPM Hot
Review: The idea behind Situationism's new "2Up2Down" series is devilishly simple. Each volume contains two tracks a piece from a pair of artists, in the case of this debut release West Country stalwarts BRS and Brighton-based Frenchman L'Aroye (real name Thomas Arroyo). It's the latter who kicks things off with "Best Girfriends (Soulful Mix)", a superb, gospel-sampling number that adds layers of rich instrumentation to a wonderfully bumping beat. Arroyo returns later in the EP with a groove-based Dub Mix that wisely makes more of his ear-catching synth stabs and the killer bassline. BRS's "Chance Not Choice" is a little more loose-limbed and synth-heavy than some of their cuts, sitting somewhere between proto-house, electro and deep house. Frank Situation's accompanying remix smartly re-casts it as a sprightly chunk of synth-heavy nu-disco.

Review: Midnight Riot's first celebration of gospel-fired disco and boogie, "Take It To Church", was rather special, so hopes are naturally high for this follow-up. Happily, we can confirm that Yam Who and company have once again nailed the brief. As with its predecessor, the 23-track set offers up a scintillating, soulful mixture of bumpin' gospel house (see Redsoul's superb "Born Again" and DJ Spen's bass-heavy tweak of Boorman's "God's Got It"), righteous disco-house (the Showfa, Alan Dixon, the piano-heavy stomp of Yam Who's "Tomorrow"), synth-laden gospel boogie (Dr Packer, Yam Who's tidy revision of Andre Esput's "Call Me"), breezy sing-alongs (Lux Experience) and plenty of dusty disco, electrofunk soul rearrangements (Divine Situation, Sweet Jubilees, Phil Jaimes). In other words, it's another essential collection.
