Review: Hypercolour sub label Losing Suki has been quietly doing its thing while its big brother deals in the more high profile cases within the realms of deep and tech house. However there have been some underground smashes within the sixteen releases thus far, including Last Magpie's "Roots" which fittingly kicks off this retrospective compilation of the strongest slammers on the label to date. Fusing low end pressure and polished modern house dynamics at one turn, and then reaching for delicate deep soul tones at the next, the Suki sound is a diverse one but it all sits comfortably together on this compilation. Huxley brings the choppy garage firepower, while Robert Cashin heads into tripped out minimal territory, and the good wagon Losing Suki keeps on rolling.

Review: Following his massive remix of Duke Dumont, Leeds-based Last Magpie continues to wear his heart on his sleeve with this beautiful four-piece that nods at so many pools of inspiration it's dizzying. The title track takes us back to the late 90s/early 2000s garage days via the Metalheadz express. Steppy, spacious and ominous, it's instant dark times! "Chicken Shop" takes us even further back to early Detroit and Chicago, all loop vocal shots and a kick that booms so hard it's almost toxic. "Initial" then soothes the blow with lush Apparat-style mournful soul. Finally we hit a serious VIP crescendo as his breakthrough murker "Roots" gets a rugged rudeboy amen polish. Heaviness, clarity, depth and a clear love for some of the best genres in the last 30 years... Last Magpie knows his stuff.

Review: Wow! Are people looking back with rose-tinted glasses to 1995 already? Well at least this 'musical magpie' is only borrowing ideas and sounds rather than copying wholesale! Possibly a bit darker than his previous releases this EP features dubby UKG ("1995"), glitchy, post-dubstep ("Hypno", "Fallen") and even a bit of wobble-heavy UKF ("Roots").
