Review: Greta Levska continues her formidable run on Get Physical Music with an Ibiza compilation sampler which follows her 2023 album Flex (for Poker Flat) and EPs for GP like Club Jupiter and Cala Da Bronx. On display here are tracks by JoJo in "Eclipse" with its euphoric progressive house and trance style, to Madd Rod's '80s inspired drive time "Jumping Jacks". Furthermore there's some electro B-boy bangers in Computer Madness' "Travelling Back To The Planet Rock" - NYC in the house - which falls alongside Hammer's disco-inspired "Red Alert". With all that mentioned, there's no overlooking Levska's own "Amps On Route One" - the inspired opener to her piping hot Ibiza mix.

Review: Unknown to the Unknown satellite hub Dance Trax sends in an arguably label defining release via a new collaborative EP between e-freq, Last Magpie and DJ Haus! Keeping it classic and future-retro in the cosmic, warehouse sounds of "Ace Of Bass" to get the ball rolling - and with subtle bleep and acid influences never far away - "State Of Peace" turns the tremolo up to 11 in the tech house mix. This release though is all about the original that goes miles to evoke a classic breakbeat sound that's as much Sheffield as it the Balearic islands to Muslemgauze and Andrew Weatherall. Proto-originality so fine you can almost hear the ghosts in the machine. May they rest in this State Of Peace.

Review: Following years spent delivering bass music-informed house tracks for Hypercolour and its Losing Suki offshoot, Last Magpie (real name Craig McNamara) struck out on his own last year by establishing the Sounds Good Sound imprint. Here he returns to the label with an impressive new EP. Title track 'Stillness In Motion' is beautiful and beguiling, with the Leeds producer cannily combining minimalistic beats, languid lead lines, spaced-out electric piano solos and fluid bass on a deep and bittersweet treat. Mark Hawkins provides a bustling, analogue-rich lo-fi house remix, while the EP also contains two versions of bonus cut 'Es': Last Magpie's own deep, dubby and deliciously dreamy original mix, and a more angular, forthright club take from Grainger and Fall Forward that pushes distorted bass to the fore.

Review: Fresh from releasing his first single of 2021 -the rather good 'Looking Through Windows' on Sounds Good Sound - Leeds lad Last Magpie pitches up on Pets Recordings with arguably his highest profile EP to date. He gets things started with 'Clocks', an attractive chunk of woozy, warm and shuffling deep house sunshine, before reaching for even hazier chords and sparkling, sunnier synths on the similarly opaque and enjoyable 'Lessons'. 'Seconds' sees him subtly doff a cap to both contemporary tech-house and Snivilisation-era Orbital - all echoing melodic elements, chunky bass and dubby house beats - while closing cut 'Reality' is the kind of picturesque, piano-laden delight that we'd normally expect to hear from the All Day I Dream label.

Review: Craig McNamara aka Last Magpie was behind a series of releases on Electric Minds and Hypercolour, but by 2015 he decided to take some time out from music to live the quiet life in the Lake District. Now he's back with a debut album that speaks to this period of reflection. It moves in tone from the sweeping ambience of "Feelings From The Depth Of My Soul" to "Exited", a more tense, droning affair, but that dreamy sensibility is also audible on the low-slung, deep house of "Esmarelda" and "Redemption". At the same time, Kissing Stones shows that McNamara hasn't lost his knack of crafting dance floor grooves, as the title track's electronic rhythm and the dense "Looping" both demonstrate.

Review: London's Hypercolour crew have now become synonymous with quality house and techno, and although they are originally rooted in the UK strain of the genres, recent years have brought along a whole new heap of styles and talent on their catalogue. First up, we should give credit to Axel Boman and the ridiculously hummable tech-house groove that is "Depression 01", followed supremely by a hard-hitting house banger in the name of "Lynn" by the unstoppable Dense & Pika. Other choice cuts on here include Kevin McPhee's nasty "CC-XXX-YY-NNNNN", Jimmy Edgar's sexier-than-ever "Hush", Lucretio's smooth "Vampire Killer", and...of screw it, it's all pretty damn killer. HOT.

Review: Hypercolour sub label Losing Suki has been quietly doing its thing while its big brother deals in the more high profile cases within the realms of deep and tech house. However there have been some underground smashes within the sixteen releases thus far, including Last Magpie's "Roots" which fittingly kicks off this retrospective compilation of the strongest slammers on the label to date. Fusing low end pressure and polished modern house dynamics at one turn, and then reaching for delicate deep soul tones at the next, the Suki sound is a diverse one but it all sits comfortably together on this compilation. Huxley brings the choppy garage firepower, while Robert Cashin heads into tripped out minimal territory, and the good wagon Losing Suki keeps on rolling.

Review: Following his massive remix of Duke Dumont, Leeds-based Last Magpie continues to wear his heart on his sleeve with this beautiful four-piece that nods at so many pools of inspiration it's dizzying. The title track takes us back to the late 90s/early 2000s garage days via the Metalheadz express. Steppy, spacious and ominous, it's instant dark times! "Chicken Shop" takes us even further back to early Detroit and Chicago, all loop vocal shots and a kick that booms so hard it's almost toxic. "Initial" then soothes the blow with lush Apparat-style mournful soul. Finally we hit a serious VIP crescendo as his breakthrough murker "Roots" gets a rugged rudeboy amen polish. Heaviness, clarity, depth and a clear love for some of the best genres in the last 30 years... Last Magpie knows his stuff.

Possibly a bit darker than his previous releases this EP features dubby UKG ("1995"), glitchy, post-dubstep ("Hypno", "Fallen") and even a bit of wobble-heavy UKF ("Roots").

Review: Given her current popularity, it's no surprise to see all-conquering house hero Maya Jane Coles mixing the latest instalment of !K7's long-running DJ Kicks series. The diminutive DJ/producer is in fine form, too, mixing up typically atmospheric house cuts and clandestine deepness with saucer-eyed late night faves and forgotten B-sides (see Bozzwell's surprisingly emotional "In My Cocoon"). As a mix it's as deep, melodic and groovy as you'd expect, with a strong vocal theme running throughout. As it progresses, it tiptoes further into bleary-eyed darkroom territory, via stand-out cuts from Marcel Dettmann, Caribou (his thrilling remix of Virgo Four), Gerry Read and T Williams. Available digitally as individual tracks or one continuous mix!
