Lavan

Born in east London and raised in Essex, Lavan is the youngest in a family of British/Malaysian descent. Surrounded by music in the household, it's perhaps not surprising he finds himself in a musical career. Exploring music production through cracked computer software Lavan eventually turned his attention to sampling, in particular sampling his father's old funk/soul records discovered in the loft. Soon enough he broadened his source material through frequenting London's various record shops, a habit which soon became a defining part of his musical identity.

The conversion from Hip-Hop to House coincides with moving into a shared apartment in Hackney where his flatmate introduced him to underground 90s Deep House. This accidental encounter would eventually lead to his relocation to Berlin along with co-founding house music record label Ascension on Wax. Still residing there, Lavan's unwavering passion sees him steadily cementing his place in underground music culture. Having released music on Wah Wah 45s & Slothboogie, receiving support from DJs such as Dam Swindle, Lavan continues carving out an identity as an artist on his own terms. His 2023 Can't Wait EP on +98 Records garnered spins across Berlin's club scene being described by Chicago's 5 Magazine as "pure unadulterated underground happiness".

Review: Lavan earned plenty of plaudits for last year's 'Can't Wait EP' on +98, a warming and nostalgic affair. Here he resurfaces on SlothBoogie with a similarly minded five-track missive that should see his reputation rise further. The Berlin-based brit hits the ground running with 'Tremendous' (with Corsica One), where delightfully breezy Hammond solos weave in and out of shuffling deep house beats, warm bass and spacey pads, before opting for a deep and jazzy flex on 'Gwen Nasty'. Elsewhere across the EP, 'Can't Tell Me Nothing' is propelled forward by a wonderfully loose-limbed US garage groove, 'Nonchalant' is deep, dubby and hazy, and 'Heard U Was a Freak' manages to be both brilliantly percussive and wonderfully dreamy.

Review: To celebrate notching up ten years in the game, London blog and party-turned-record label SlothBoogie has decided to offer-up their most ambitious release to date: an epic collection of previously unheard cuts from a mixture of imprint regulars and like-minded friends. There's naturally plenty to set the pulse racing throughout, with highlights including the sparkling jazz-funk-meets-deep house sunshine of Levan's "U R Beautiful In The Face", the deep, breakbeat-driven dreaminess of Philippa's "That's What I Mean By Free", the piano solo-heavy disco-house bump of Leatherette's "Your Love", and the dub disco-meets-acid house heaviness of "Rewind Run" by Pablot. Throw in similarly impressive contributions from Kassian, Luvless, Casino Times and Soul Wun (the classic jazz-house of "Thank You, St Germain") and you have a must-have collection.

Lavan - "Feels Good 2 B Good Again" - (6:38) 126 BPM
Jus Jam - "Attraction Rules" - (3:15) 95 BPM
LPTLG - "Spleen" - (4:52) 120 BPM
Review: To date, Beats of No Nation's compilation style "Dance Ideas" series has been uniformly excellent, so hopes are naturally high for volume five. We shouldn't have worried, because it's every bit as essential as its predecessors. Conformal kicks things off with the sunrise-ready deep house breeze of "Gathering", where tactile chords and undulating synthesizer lines ride a bubbly drum machine rhythm, before Lavan doffs a cap to S3A and Folamour via the dusty sample-house warmth of "Feels Good 2 B Good Again". Jus Jam steals the show via the slowly building downtempo bliss of "Attraction Rules" - all Hammond organ doodles, enveloping chords and new jack swing beats - while LPTLG offers us some classic deep house smoothness in the shape of "Spleen".

Review: We enthusiastically described Beats Of No Nation's first Dance Ideas EP as a "fabulous collection of tracks", so hopes are naturally high for this follow-up. Corbi kicks things off with the wonderfully fluid and groovy "OK, Tell Me", an ultra-deep and groovy house shuffler rich in jazz-funk guitars, swirling strings and punchy sampled horn stabs, before Levan unveils the bluesy, eyes-closed wonder that is "The Right Thing, The Hardest Thing", a kind of vocal-free Sade record for the disco-house generation. Label co-owner Jad Lee confidently skips into jazz-house territory on the piano-fired warmth of "Jazz hands You'll Never Understand", while Olywok takes us into space via the nu-disco tinged, house tempo Motor City futurism of "Maintain".
