Review: Brooklyn's Truth & Soul has long established themselves as one of the major purveyors of the finest rare soul and funk known to man. An artist whose work they've promoted before is Lee Fields. Here we get a new two-tracker recorded with his band The Expressions. First up is a single edit of "Standing By Your Side", a vintage sounding mid-paced funk cut culled from the Emma Jean album. On the digital flipside is rarity "Don't Walk", a slinky organ-led song of defiance. Timeless stuff.
Review: Released a couple of years ago, this excellent album saw veteran funk-man Lee Fields return to the fray thanks to nu-funk nabob Leon "El" Michaels and his bandmates who recorded the smoking Stax-meets-Muscle Shoals backings for the record. Now the musicianship can be closely appreciated again thanks to this all instrumental reissue from Truth & Soul. The rich and authentic instrumentation - distant-mic'd strings, Steve Cropper guitar licks, fatback drums and the heavenly Hammonds - all carry this vocalless album along nicely, making it a very worthwhile second bite of the cherry.
