Review: Borders Of Light is an Italian electro label that for years now has made a name for itself through its Year 000.000.001 volumes, which now reaches it fifth edition. While there might be some recognisable names here for those who know, each volume boasts a cast of new and intrepid talent - beginning with it Kevin Paul and his eerie opener "Driving Percs" that moves into the playful horror of Yare's "Monster". Further into the compilation you'll find some acid warehouse tunes in "Sensei" by LEONOR next to some progressive minimal synth from Rob Hes & Paralel via "Not Human" before moving into the techno plane crash that is Raffaele Marchitelli's "Confusion" and Mombaak's badass burner "Hoo". To infinity and beyond.
Review: Rotten City Files' compilation series, Rotten Citizens, has long been a reliable source of darker nu-disco, left-of-centre house, mind-altering chuggers and what the Spanish label calls "psychedelic wave music". Volume five - the first instalment in the series for two years - continues to plough this pleasingly mind-bending, club-ready furrow, dancing between undulating, disco-not-disco throb-jobs (Azaria, Aleito and Alvaro Cabana's moody 'Ostur'), modern reincarnations of 'ethno-beat' (Shklema, Trio Misterio), TB-303-heavy post-punk dub disco (Dan Solo and MI.RO), sleazy acid house (Lenoor), new beat darkness (Rina), squelchy horror disco (Oblako Moranta) and grandiose, mid-80s new wave pomposity (Alex Aguayo's ace 'Earth Tones').
Review: Calling upon a deeper shaman from the inner exotics, producer from planet earth Leonor arrives on the Shango label following a run of impressive releases for others like Tom Tom Disco, Playground (Arg) and Ombra International. Sending in the sounds and field recordings of an alluring medina, "Curandero" and its atmospherics are underpinned by an industrial disco rhythm and wailing motifs that comes packed with a Feller remix channelling the spirits of Major Lazer, while Rabih Rizk's version opts from something '90s, tribal and trance. Alongside this is the slower, tropical motion and rainforest vibes of a slightly grungy "La Creacion", with Buddha Bar vibes abound in DBRA's remix, next to some horn-blowing, psychedelic acid funk in "Poder Cosmico".
Review: By now, we should all know what to expect from Toolroom's "Poolside Ibiza" compilation strand, namely groovy nu-disco, house and laidback Balearic beats inspired by afternoons spent lounging by the water in stonking White Isle heat. Naturally, there are plenty of gems to be found amongst the 40 unmixed tunes selected by chosen DJs Moullinex and Xinobi, from their own collaborative post-punk/dub number "X Marks The Spot", to the slick '80s synth-pop dreaminess of Tensnake's fine remix of Xinobi's "Far Away Place" and the drowsy, Morricone-influenced soundscape weirdness of Simple Symmetry's remix of Moscoman's "I Ran". Throw in some seriously good cuts from Felipe Gordon, Donald Dust, Pin Up Club and Meera (whose carnival-ready boogie jam "Fine Without You" stands out), and you have a fine collection of summery cuts.
