Review: How much unreleased, previously forgotten heat is there in Masters at Work's vaults? Rather a lot, it seems, as this release marks the ninth EP in their ongoing 'Lost Tapes' series. What's an offer this time is a collection of varied passes of the same track, 'Talkin' About The Spirit'. They begin with the 'No Sample' version, a piano and organ-sporting chunk of heads-down MAW brilliance that sounds like a mid-90s concoction, before serving up the dub style 'No Sample Stripped' mix. There are two 'MAW with Patti' versions, which replicate the previous mixes but add in more classic disco-era vocal samples, plus a 'Beats' mix that focuses on Kenny Dope's impeccable drum programming and some carefully placed dark string stabs.

Review: Louie Vega's long-running Elements of Life project - an ever-changing collective of musicians who create live house, disco, Latin and soul tracks - returns to action, this time with long-time pal Josh Milan in tow. In its original Louie Vega mix form (track 3),'Let U Shine' is a deliciously deep soulful house number with tribal-influenced percussion, gospel-influenced vocals and Vega's usual impeccably produced instrumentation. There are two top-notch 'Honeycomb' mixes (vocal and instrumental), which opt for a breezier and more tactile vibe and nods to both early New York garage-house and the earlier 'proto-house' wave spearheaded by Boyd Jarvis, Timmy Regisford and Paul Simpson. Rounding off the EP is the previously unheard demo version of live Latin house workout 'Los Tonos Segrados'.

Review: For committed house-heads of a certain vintage, the recent rediscovery of a treasure trove of "lost" Masters at Work recordings - and more importantly their release via a series of must-check EP - has been like Christmas and birthdays all rolled into one. Predictably, there's plenty to get the pulse racing on the series' fifth instalment, not least opener 'Smash It', a heavy, locked-in groover driven forwards by typically bouncy Kenny Dope drums and a trippy, mind-altering acid bassline. Those drums - and that bassline - naturally come to the fore on the accompanying 'Drum Dub' version. Bonus cut 'Don't Throw It Away' is an even wilder, percussion-heavy riff on a similar theme - all delay-laden vocal snippets, weird noises, cut-up First Choice samples and infectious drums - and sounds ripe for peak-time plays.

Review: Two contrasting cuts make up the latest instalment in the 'MAW Lost Tapes' series. In the red corner we have 'Funky Anane', a looping groover that tops a hip-shaking Latin rhythm with jazz sax and a female voice saying "funky" over and over. Meanwhile in the blue corner there's 'MAW Want You', an uptempo 4/4 Jersey organ groove with a bassline that reveals exactly where speed garage got its ideas from. For this old garagehead the latter wins by a knockout, but you pays your money and you makes your choice - pausing only to consider what it must be to have made so many great tracks that material of this calibre got left on the shelf!

Review: The latest instalment in Masters At Work's essential 'Lost Tapes' series takes us back to the early '90s and a long-forgotten studio session they did with the late, great Boyd Jarvis, a New York house originator famed for his soloing skills and memorable basslines. We get three passes on 'Boyd's Jam', each of which offers a perfect union of swinging MAW beats (programmed by Kenny Dope), deep chords and textures (laid down by Louie Vega) and bass and keys-solos courtesy of Jarvis. There's the 'On The Organ Mix', which as the title suggests is marked out by some dazzling organ improvisations, the more layered, spaced-out and intoxicating 'Synth Dub' (think organs and mazy electronic lead lines), and the DJ tool style 'Zipper Beats'.

Review: With all due respect to the virtuoso accomplishments that Nu Yorican Soul, Elements Of Life etc definitely were, this writer's favourite MAW productions have always been the raw, pumping NY club cuts that the duo put out back in the early days. If you agree, then these two gems, recently discovered lurking on two-inch tapes from 25-30 years ago and given just the very lightest of 21st Century makeovers to bring them into line with modern production values, are an absolute must - quite how they never ended up on Nervous or Strictly is a mystery. Do we really need to say any more?

Review: Louie Vega's cover of boogie-era disco classic 'Barely Breaking Even', which is created in cahoots with the two men most responsible for the early '80s original, Leroy Burgess and Patrick Adams, was a relatively faithful rendition. These high-profile remixes are naturally a little more revolutionary, though tastefully done and in keeping with the spirit of Vega and company's version. Ron Trent leads the way delivering a spacey, percussively detailed, and effortlessly soulful vocal remix and dub - the latter showcasing the high-quality musicianship of everyone involved - before Matthias Heilbronn takes over. Choose between full vocal and instrumental takes on the rubbery, disco-house style 'BKNY Mix', the rolling and sun-splashed 'Soulflower Mix' and his more faithful-to-the-original 'Remix'.

Review: Here's something to genuinely set the pulse racing: a cover of Barabbas' Afro-fired funk-rock classic, "Woman", which brings together producer extraordinaire Louie Vega (and his Elements of Life Band) and legendary freestyle singer George LaMond. Vega's EP-leading "Main Mix" is the bomb: a richly percussive, 11-minute fusion of Latin disco and funk rock topped off with clipped guitar riffs, heavy organ chords and a killer lead vocal from LaMond. Vega provides numerous remixes himself, including an extra-percussive "Dub Bass Organ" mix and a salsa-inspired "Latin Soul Mix" that's almost as essential as the main version. Elsewhere, old pal David Morales provides a breezy house remix and an organ-heavy dub, while Frankie C's "Brazilian Mix" is a carnival-friendly affair that's seriously infectious and life-affirming. In a word: brilliant.

Review: Really this should be called 'Elements Of Life Extensions: Extensions', because for this reissue the 2004 remixed version of Vega's landmark 2003 long-player has been beefed up from eight tracks to 16. 'Elements Of Life' saw Vega turning his back on tuff NYC house in favour of summery, Latin- and jazz-infused soul, and for anyone who loved the original album this is an essential purchase - Jazz N' Grooves blissed-out take on 'Mozalounge' is worth the price of admission on its own! But check it out even if you weren't a fan, if only for the dreamaway space disco of 'Steel Congo' and a very respectable cover of Candido's classic 'Thousand Finger Man'.

Review: After a successful run of vinyl editions, the Grammy award nominated XXVIII digital release series is taking it to another level with The Unreleased & Lost Mixes. One half of the legendary Masters At Work, Lil Louie Vega has stated that when making albums, there are more songs created than allocated for a project. In this case, there were said to be over 50 tracks created for this particular project. He selected 22 unreleased and lost tracks from the recordings and remixes, along with DJ friendly versions by close associates. The legendary and unmistakeable voice of Kenny Bobien is joined by the deep and soulful tones of Cindy Mizelle on "Together We Can" (Louie Vega dub), the lush and evocative Latin vibes that Vega is such as expert at are on display with Louie Vega starring Luis Salinas' "Es Vedra" (Louie Vega & Salinas Guitar dub) and for some simply straight up house magic by one of the dons of the scene: you really can't go wrong with "Gimme Some Love" (Sean Pad Main mix) featuring the wonderful Vikter Duplaix.
