Review: There's a hint in the title here, as theBasement Discos serve up a collection of 20 house tracks with the ivories firmly front and centre. But while the old Joanna might be the thread that ties it all together, there's still plenty of variety on offer, from sprightly jazz-house workouts like AFAMoo's 'The Art Of Jazz' to deep house jams like A Naranjo's 'What Lies To Head' and Foot-Loose's 'Weekend'-biting disco-houser 'LA Piano Mood'. It's not all nostalgic homages to the hands-in-the-air anthems of the early 90s, in other words - though naturally there are plenty of those as well, with Piem's '4Real' one clear standout in that department. Of course, if you're not a fan of piano-based house, it's probably not the album for you... otherwise the 'Paradise' part of the title is entirely justified, nuff said!

Review: DOBRO's ongoing Tape series - so-called because it is also released on cassette - has so far proved to be a reliable source of mixed-up material from a wide range of largely unknown and up-and-coming European artists. The third edition of the series is as strong as its predecessors and contains an alluring mixture of dusty, jazz-flecked deep house (Jan Janssen, the sample-rich, low-slung haziness of Sven Wegner), disco-tinged dancefloor workouts (Stogov), filter-heavy peak-time loop jams (Siggatunez), tooled-up re-edits with a twist (Alexny, Jordan Reece, the rubbery, horn-heavy brilliance of 'Romantic Train' by Cosmoconics), head-nodding MPC beats (Deej of Kooley High) and rushing, shirts-off piano house cheeriness (Dan PM, Sascha Chiminiera and Phonk D).

Featuring a diverse lineup of talented artists, this compilation is a testament to the label's commitment to quality electronic music. The journey commences with the collaborative effort of Marc Brauner and Luca Olivotto on "Hallo Hallo", a far-sighted deep house gem that sets the tone for the entire release. Marc Brauner takes the solo spotlight on "Many Times," showcasing his skills in crafting uplifting house music. With a fantastic R&B vocal sample, this track exudes infectious energy and is destined to get dancefloors moving. Then it is Luca Olivotto bringing a warm and smooth house cut characterized by a nostalgic rave-like bass sound with "Love Moves". Review: Luca Olivotto, a Berlin-based producer who's previously appeared on labels such as The Basement Discos and Inhale/Exhale, serves up some very fine trad-style house and garage grooves on this EP for DOBRO. 'Only One' itself marries an intricate funk bassline to 90s hands-in-the-air pianos, and comes complete with a tougher, denser Iner Remix, while elsewhere on the EP, 'Good Vibrations' foregrounds pianos redolent of early 90s (US) garage, 'Want You' flirts with disco and boogie flavas and 'Universe' comes on like classic rave given a jazzual makeover. Good stuff all round, but the Original of the title track wins out for yours truly.

Review: Following a run of multi-artist EPs and solo singles from other artists, Small Great Things founder Luca Olivotto steps back into the limelight with his first solo EP for the imprint for almost four years. He hits the ground running with 'After The Beep', a gorgeous chunk of warming, sun-soaked deep house bounce smothered in jaunty synth-string stabs, funky bass and jammed-out organ riffs, before reaching for glassy-eyed female vocals and classic-sounding piano and organ riffs on the revivalist late '90s US garage surge of 'Love Transmission'. Elsewhere, 'Take Me' sees Olivotto wrap gorgeous piano motifs and cut-up female vocal snippets around a rolling house beat, while 'Redshape' gets the right balance between loose-limbed US house grooves, saucer-eyed synth stabs and classic Victor Simonelli style deep house sounds.

Review: Four cuts here from Berlin's Luca Olivotto, coming on his own Endless Music label, that blur the boundaries between deep house, nu-disco and synth-pop. 'Taken For A Fool' rides a deep house beat but the Level 42-ish male vocal and synth stabs are pure 80s pop. 'Take Twice' is a shimmering, synth-y disco cut and more obviously dancefloor-friendly, 'We Behind' is an almost Balearic-sounding concoction of frantic, stuttered drum machine beats and languid synth washes, and then finally 'Ode To The Sun' is a slow-building, all-instrumental deep/prog house jam that'd be perfect for dropping as the sun comes up...
