Review: One of the pioneers of the deeper side of the dub techno sound, Luke Hess' catalogue speaks for itself and includes numerous releases for FXHE, Echocord and Minimood. Now he teams up with Joshua Harrison for his latest release. "Benthos" is a typically hypnotic Luke Hess jam, with layered chords unfolding over dubbed out beats. "Hadal" sees the pair go deeper, with cavernous synth lines married to a spiky rhythm. "Nekton" moves closer to Echocord's approach, thanks to the use of sweeping chords and swooshing effects. Closing out this fine release is "Upwelling", where the two Detroit producers deliver a clubby take on the sound, led by a galloping groove and featuring tranced out chords.

Review: The Jaunt Records 10 years series shores up with the Land installment featuring another four adventurous souls that have the spirit of deepest techno in their bones. Stojche lets lush Motor City synths lead the way on the energetic "The Exchange" before AWOL gets into an intricate broken beat groove on the stunning "54.973379, -1.614705". Luke Hess brings some unabashed acid gurgles to the front of the mix on "TDY" and then Deep'a & Biri plot a course for dubby waters with the growling tones of "Pilgrim".

Review: The sixth instalment of this series brings together established names with upcoming producers in the deep house / techno scene. Representing the established artists is Dave DK, who has been releasing music for almost two decades: unsurprisingly, his contribution, "Immer Gut" is a wonderfully delicate affair, revolving around introspective piano lines, soft-focused filters and fragile percussion. He's joined by Luke Hess, a regular on Omar S' label and whose pumping "Platte" explores the moody end of dub techno, thanks to its dramatic chord sweeps. However, the compilation is also successful in highlighting the fact that there is a lot of new talent out there, with Anton Djaneiro's wonderfully evocative "Heimweh" and Sevvero's techy "Artemis" both standing out.

Review: Despite his long association with fellow Detroit artists like Omar-S and OB Ignitt, Luke Hess remains out on his own. This is largely because, as Facette shows, he has a unique sound that draws on European as well a US influences. Opening track "Emeralds" has echoes of Motor City synths, but at its heart is a driving, dub rhythm. Similarly, on "Lumen", euphoric chord stabs are fused with a heads-down groove that'll resonate in big rooms. "Myriads" sees Hess return to Detroit techno influences with waves of hissing percussion riding a snaking, metallic groove with echoes of vintage Robert Hood and Stacey Pullen.

Review: Kenneth Christiansen's revered dub techno institution celebrates fifteen years of trusted innovation on this superb compilation showcasing the label's esteemed roster of legends. Starting out with the always impressive Stephan Laubner aka STL who surprises as always; this time with the haunting yet bittersweet ambient journey "The Ancient Scale". There's more from masters of the old school such as German producer Arovane and his broken low end theory on "Struktur 1", the deeply rooted resonations of XDB's "Latonal" and Fachwerk main man Mike Dehnert's Maurizio inspired "Track Providing Home" being one of our highlights.

Review: In all honesty, this latest compilation by Sweden's ever-impressive Kontra Musik caught us by surprise! Before we tell you how much we love this release, it's important to mention that we saw them as a label releasing disparate slices of quality techno, but hadn't predicted their unity as manifested by this get-together of artists. The opener "Weggeputscht" by The Durian Brothers is almost enough to invest the money in this release, a slow-burning tribal nodder with a deep bassline, but the rest of the material by the likes of TM404 or Jason Fine is also pure gold. Our favourites are: the 3D-layered techo of Fishermen on "Black Haze", Frak's bumpy "666", and Silent Servant's remix of "Time Track" by Mokira. Very warmly recommended.

Review: Considering the spacey title, artwork and long-standing Detroit credentials of both Luke Hess and Omar-S collaborator Ob Ignitt, you'd expect these two tracks to be on the intergalactic side. Happily, they are. The duo kicks things off with "Jefferson Reserve", a tactile, floor-friendly chunk of energetic deep house blessed with classic electrofunk bass, deep space pads, and the kind of glistening, far-out synthesizer melodies you'd expect to hear the Cantina Band play in one of the Star Wars movies. They move further towards techno territory on flipside "Calm of Night", where warring lasers fizz between the speakers whilst progressive house-influenced chords and rhythms propel the track forwards at the speed of light.

Review: Luke Hess is one of the few techno producers who effortlessly flits between European and US sounds. This is reflected in the type of labels he releases on - Omar S' FXHE and Danish imprint Echocord. Hess' latest missive for Echocord typical of his sound; "Pillars of Creation" sees him fuse deep, dubby beats with Basic Channel chords, while "Gravitational Effects" further explores this approach, using insistent percussion and a cavernous bass. The release finishes with the spoken word oddity that is "Crate Diggin On Planet Omnom", but this releases' real highlights are Hess' tough, dubby club tracks and his ability to transcend scenes and genres.

Review: Hess unites Detroit and Berlin on this latest missive for Danish label Echocord. "Pashko (Version 1)" is based on heavy beats and a menacing bass that rumbles along to reveal thundering claps. However, it's the chords that prove compelling, welling up and covering the arrangement in a layer of gloom. On the second version, steely drums and bleepy tones provide the basis for a throbbing basslne and Hess' trademark chords. This time however, they have changed in tone from moody to dreamy, with the US producer moving closer to the legacy of his hometown of Detroit. Sometimes, it's impossible to escape where you're from.

Review: Luke Hess drops one of his most dancefloor-friendly tracks so far. "Believe" is powered by a combination of a ticking, acidic groove and a prowling bassline that threaten to but never quite take off. The climax does finally, but it's on the back of a trancey chord segue that seems slightly at odds with Hess' work. The real highlight though is Shed's 'deepanddubbydub' remix. Not content with releasing one of this year's finest albums, Rene Pawowlitz drops a slamming, acid-soaked track with an unmistakable off-beat - something that is pervasive on so much of his work - and couples it with a ghostly melodic filament that harks back to the days of hardcore rave.

Review: Kenneth Christiansen's label celebrates its tenth year in business without any fuss or the whiff of the understated marketing campaigns that underpin some of Echocord's peers. Indeed, it is reasonable to say that the key to the Danish imprint's longevity has been to focus on the deeper, dubbier side of techno, without worrying too much about what all around them are doing. Put simply, Echocord was releasing textured techno for the head and the floor before and after it was trendy to do so. Unsurprisingly, the Echocord Jubilee Compilation manages to capture these two spheres. It opens with the ethereal, wistful "Tides" by Fluxion, which slides into the shantying "My Safe Harbour" by Quantec. By the time that Deadbeat's contribution appears, the tempo has gradually gone up thanks to the Canadian's trademark tribal drums and Onmutu Mechanicks's contribution turns the mood slightly more menacing as "Calyx" marches to the beat of metallic drums and teems with foreboding chords. This being Echocord however, reflective and evocative sensibilities are never too far away, and Luke Hess's "Kratos", although based on clipped drums, boasts breathy, shimmering melodies. Christiansen also proves that he has a keen ear for potential crossover tracks, and Intrusion/Echospace producer Stephen Hitchell's "Fox Convextion", with its pulsing bassline and uplifting hooks, could propel this label into the spotlight that so many lesser, hype-driven labels occupy.
