Review: The Vision Recordings crew have once again unearthed a weighty box of gems with this new three tracker, seeing the combined powers of both Machinedrum & Holly for a dive into steppers abandon. We open up with the crunchy synth warbles and unorthodox vocal work of 'Novaform', a truly unique arrangement that packs both a subby gut punch and a midrange hook to match. Next, 'Blueshift' strips the instrumentation back a tad for a more fluttery original, focussing on emotive melodies and clicky percussion, before the sounds of 'Hide Sun' arrive for one final showdown, delivering a choppy, jungle-inspired slammer, doused in euphoric pad textures and tidy sampling for a killer final slap. Awesome work

Review: Time flies when you're meddling at the forefront of bass innovation... While the label still feels so new and fresh, it's already been five years of dark soul gold from 1985. To celebrate, bossman Alix Perez has curated these exceptional remixes from the gang that span from Sam Binga's slick and sexy UKG twist of 'Melodrama' to Skeptical's sub aquatic switch of 'Trinity' via Monty's cavernous space funk flip of 'ABR'. Complete with plenty more goodies from the likes of DLR, Visages and Break, this marks five years in 1985's signature high benchmark style. Here's to another five years.

Psyconia
Only One (feat Angelica Bess) - (4:37) 83 BPM
Stone Age (feat Deniro Farrar) - (3:56) 85 BPM
Review: The follow-up to his universally acclaimed 2020 album "A View of U" - and collaborations with A$AP Ferg and Shelley FKA DRAM - this Psyconia EP explores a space traversing tempos and styles that pushes through broken beats, hip-hop, techno and drum & bass, with that professional studio-acoustic touch to boot! For that classic hyperfluorescent Machinedrum sound look to "Inner Ear" featuring Chrome Sparks, with more genre-infused, vocal and instrumental pop collaborations coming through "Only One", "Stone Age" and "U Just R". Delving into new fangled trance via drum & bass in "Stairzzzzzz", the other solo Machinedrum jam is the melodic, future-stepping and blissful "Figueroa".

A View Of U
The Relic (feat Rochelle Jordan) - (4:22) 108 BPM
Star (feat Mono/Poly & Tanerelle) - (3:42) 141 BPM
Review: Machinedrum is back with his first album in four years! A View Of U sees the arrival of the LA-based producer's ninth LP overall putting him back on the map after teaming up with Holly to release the Berry Patch EP on Visions Recordings, and his J-E-T-S collaboration with Jimmy Edgar. Out of the 11 tracks on show here, eight are collaborations, featuring the likes of Indiana rapper Freddie Gibbs ("Kain Train"), Canadian R&B singer Rochelle Jordan ("The Relic") to Awful Records boss Father ("Spin Blocks"). Find other dope collabs in Mono/Poly & Taner?lle's trip hop and steppy "Star" alongside something deep, cosmic and new age with Chrome Sparks in "Idea 36". A View Of U provides the follow up to Machinedrums last full-length, Human Energy (2016), which this time around is said to center around the idea of having an out-of-body experience. Double Vision.

Review: Alix Perez's 1985 sets the bar again... Edition 3 is another instalment of their spotless V/A series which covers the label's broad range of shades. This one is a game of two halves as the first five tracks flex around the 140 region with crucial slabs from Halogenix's Lordel alias and dubstep men of the moment Ternion Sound. Meanwhile the second half flips to D&B with a whole clutch of impressive designs; Visages' "Memories" is a mournful stepper, Bredren get bad-ass with the thumpy, bumpy "Only One", Machinedrum brings some outstanding soul on "Braided Leaves" and Perez delivers three of his finest. Bring on Edition 4.

Yangmei - (4:46) 172 BPM
Played by: Mauoq, Calculon
Review: Vision are just full of surprises right now. Straight off the back of Noisia's "Armajet" OST comes this gully-AF quartet from Machinedrum and EDM/trap producer Holly. Neither artist is known for making drum & bass (although you can hear elements of it in many of their past productions) but it sounds like they've been bending breaks at 170 forever. From the rave tension of "Berry Patch" to the glacial textures and experimentalism of "Bramble" to the underwater Rockwell soul "Goji" and the Salvador Dali style bass of "Yangmei", this is the absolute business.

Review: Is it just us or have Ninja Tune gotten progressively better over the years? Whether it's your thing or not, the imprint invariably come through with the goods, and they always manage to capture the very best from their artists. This time, it's a remix of Machinedrum's "Do It 4 U" by Darq E Freaker, who decides to take the original's r&b sensibility to the next level; the result being a loud, penetrating pop tune with a heavy EDM influence. If you'r into your big crowds, big parties, and superstar moves, then this is your gear

Dos Puertas - (3:02) 90 BPM
Played by: Denham Audio
Review: When Machinedrum drops a single on Ninja Tune's catalogue we instantly know two things: a) it'll be an immediate favourite of ours, and b) there's an album on the horizon. Here we have "Dos Puertas" from the Sepalcure associate, a tune whose identity is hard to pin down and categorise; the beat is all over the place in terms of structure, but that doesn't matter because it has that typical Machinedrum sound, a sonic swagger that broadly fits under electronica but that also meanders into broken beat and r&b. Masterfully executed and stand-out, as usual.

Kuedo - "Slow Knife" - (3:55) 67 BPM
Herva - "Kila" - (5:43) 66 BPM
Review: At a time when so many of its early contemporaries are rarely seen releasing these days, Planet Mu's 20th anniversary is even more of a cause de celebre. The powerhouse of uncompromising leftfield electronic music has pulled no punches when it comes to commemorating the time, drawing on the staggering roster including Kuedo, Remarc, Traxman, Falty DL, Machinedrum, Milanese, Vex'd, Neil Landstrumm and so very many more besides, bringing together tracks from the vaults, from forgotten times, some of which have never previously seen the light of day. With 50 tracks to delve into, this is enough of an education to school even the most learned mind.

Rise N Fall (DBridge Fall N Rise remix) - (5:16) 170 BPM
Gunshotta (Om Unit Rollers VIP) - (5:14) 172 BPM Hot
Review: When Ninja Tune come knocking on your door to remix one of their artists, in this case Machinedrum, you answer. dBridge welcomes Travis Stewart's "Rise N Fall" into his studio with a vocal build up that drops into an emotional pulse of stepping drums and twinkling atmospheres. Om Unit's remix of "Gunshotta" delivers an old school bassline and frenetic jungle percussion, while Moresound pitches rave against touches of footwork, drum and bass and a whole load of bootyshake in his remix of "Dont 1 2 Lose U". For something a little more easoteric, Fis detunes and twists "Eyesdontlie" into a cavernous throb of earthshaking rumbles with demonic vocal loops adding an extra haunting vibe.

Boxoff - (6:12) 80 BPM
Safed - (5:14) 108 BPM
Review: In a final move within the sprawling vision of his Vapor City project, Travis Stewart offers up another albums worth of material that ties in to the online community he sought to create with the release of the initial album. It's everything you would hope for from additional Machinedrum material, melding soft and gentle melodic elements with razor sharp drum programming, bubbling footwork percussive tones, and enough playful ideas to keep things warm and inviting. There are some ruder moments, as in the bass rubbing throwdown "B Patient", but then there are some outright folky inflections such as the plucked guitar on "More Than Friends". Always surprising and never repeating himself, Machinedrum nails it once again.

Review: Representing a spread of some of the strongest operators in the ever-more fractious world of electronica, Bleep celebrates ten years of operations with this strong package of exclusive tracks. The styles run the gamut from nervy droning sub-techno courtesy of Gas through to Nathan Fake's charmingly fuzzy melodic bombast. Notable inclusions come from Machinedrum with an excellent line in live drum funk, Autechre refiguring the slow jam as a hallucinatory march, and Shackleton turning out some fiery percussive patterns. When the cast also includes Lone, Oneohtrix Point Never, Untold and many more besides, who needs any more convincing?

Back Seat Ho - (4:32) Hot
Back Seat Ho (Rustie remix) - (3:04)
Review: Continuing the geographical theme of his Vapor City LP, Machinedrum is back on Ninja Tune with more of his dreamy hybrids that sit at the nexus of juke, electro and jungle, expanding on the groundwork of the album with the choppy funk of "Back Seat Ho". Rustie is in a fearsome mood as he reworks the original into a drum-heavy stomper, before "On My Mind" staggers out with its wild-eyed arpeggios and slow-rushing snares. "Neujack" has a futuristic juke lilt to it, precision-engineered for maximum nag, and then Pinch and Adrian Sherwood step up for a remix of "Back Seat Ho" that takes the kitchen sink approach to production from guitars and toasting to rapid fire drum machine blasts.

Gunshotta Ave EP
Gunshotta - (5:46)
Stirrin - (4:10)
Review: With his Vapor City LP dropping with a weighty impact, Travis 'Machinedrum' Stewart serves up this tidy EP to start expanding on the open-to-interpretation city concept that lingers over the album. Gunshotta Avenue unsurprisingly is predominantly populated by the powerful lead tune "Gunshotta" with all its limber breaks and atmospheric chord swells, but Stewart backs it up with the reggae-infused lilt of "Stirrin", all cheeky skank and slick breaks. On the remix front, Fracture gets called upon to work a little more club roughness into "Gunshotta", heading for that crisp half-step D&B headspace without discarding the original essence of the track. Meanwhile AMIT whips up a "Thug Dub" of the track that revels in reverb and the space it creates, proposing an entirely fresh but equally valid angle steeped in true roots styles.

Infinite Us - (7:11)
Review: After his Room(s) long player for Planet Mu confirmed him as an unsung hero amongst US beatsmiths, Travis Stewart follows up that gargantuan effort with this turn for Ninja Tune. It's a deeply atmospheric album that works Stewart's palpable love of jungle breaks into richly atmospheric pieces that move through sometimes mournful, sometimes dreamlike spaces that hang together like all the pieces of a creative puzzle should. At times the tone is blissful, as on "Center Your Love", while the immaculate breaks give way to strung out coldwave balladry on "U Still Lie". His sense of adventure as intact as ever, Stewart happily follows up such contemplation with the feisty tech-step precision of "Eyesdontlie", ensuring there's never a dull moment across the ten tracks.
