Review: Hot on the heels of last year's release for Hot Haus, e-freq delivers this debut for Dance Trax. "E Is 4 Freak" is a fast-paced, gritty banger. It resounds to insistent steely percussion and high-octane beats, with a series of filtered drops and builds and subsonic bleeps layered over the top. It makes for a powerful, distinctive affair. On "Dream State", a more esoteric approach applies; inspired by the jacking grooves of Chicago house, the track features tripped out vocal samples and an acid-tinged, frosty synth line that keeps on building through the arrangement. It's sure to attract the same level of support that the Hot Haus release received.

Review: Mak & Pasteman have been solid staples on London's Food Music, but it is with a heavy heart that we bid farewell to the talented duo. They will be calling it a day to focus on personal projects and what a way to sign off with this jam titled "Tell Ya Something". It's a fierce expression in percolator jack in the vein of classic Green Velvet/Relief Records style. If that was not enough, the legend from NYC Junior Sanchez delivers an extended remix which gets into some infectious disco loop shenanigans that's sure to burn up the dancefloor - much like anything else by the undisputed veteran.

Review: "My MPC" is an ode to the one of the key pieces of equipment used to make techno: on the title track's nightmare chord stabs, the MPC is called out by an unknown vocalist, alongside "two turntables and a bunch of records|". As the track reaches a rolling drum climax, there can be no doubt that the MPC has been hugely beneficial to the process. "Tijuana" sees Mak & Pasteman change their focus to concentrate on a shaking, percussive affair that has echoes of Mexican funk. Review: This UK act has released on labels like Unknown to the Unknown and Dixon Avenue Basement Jams, and now makes an impressive debut for Boom Ting. The title track is led by a moody bass and steely percussion, with swirling musical textures bubbling to the surface. Meanwhile, "Reakt" is a grainy affair that breaks down to the sound of wild tones and scratchy noise, only to find its jacking mojo again quickly thereafter. The pair shift gear once again on "Critical"; this time, the rhythm is more stepping but the pair's percussive skills mean that it doesn't lose its dance floor appeal. Review: London based Rinse FM hosts Mak & Pasteman land on DFTD for the first time after some hot releases for Dixon Avenue Basement Jams, Lobster Boy, Unknown To The Unknown and of course their own Materials imprint, to name but a few. Fresh off the back of their standout remix of The Utopia Project on DJ Haus in The House mix late last year, too. It might be a debut release on the label for the hot duo, but the story remains the same: the EP is totally representative of their production skills and in the words of the label themselves 'is a certified basement banger.' With those classic hands in the air piano stabs and diva vocal loops over a relentless warehouse stomp, a remark like that is spot on!

Review: Leeds' Mak & Pasteman are back on the Materials imprint for their seventh instalment of tech-driven house music, and if you're wondering whether this is of the outsider variation then you might be disappointed. However, if you want something effective and banging on the dance floor, then these two are at the top of the UK house/techno game right now. "Sermon" is a full-out fist-pumper, a technoid floor track with a rolling, subtly acidic bassline and some big room drums. "Deeper" says it all in the name, but this techno track is still powerful enough to give any sort of dancer the motivation to move and rave out. Effective DJ tools, right here!

Review: Mak & Pasteman now have quite the collection of labels under their belt, and previous releases for imprints like Lobster Boy, Sounds Of Sumo and Unknown To The Unknown have elevated their level onto a new category of quality. This new EP is the sixth instalment of the Materials label, which they inaugurated with the 001, and we're not surprised to hear that "It's Dis" is a slick and aggressive techno banger with a familiar, and bass-centric, UK edge. "Creep", on the other hand, offers something odder, more tribalistic and very much in line with the sort of material that is heard across the more experimental of dancefloors nationwide.

Review: Mak and Pasteman should not be categorised as being 'bass artists'. A better way to coin their styles would be to say that they make pretty fierce and excellent DANCE music. This latest collaboration on Lobster Boy seems them in a surprising techno mood, which at first is more contained and steady on the breaks through "Call 2 Me", before turning all hawkish and German on us through the highly recommended banger that is "Le Freak". Solid.

Review: Well, the UK's Shifting Peaks have really gone and done it with this latest leviathan of a compilation, an anthology of their best and most wanted from 2010 until now. Inside, there's talent and plenty of club antics bouncing off the wall left, right and centre; with over fifty cuts there's enough to go around and satisfy a whole artillery of bass-heads. Review: Roughly two years after they first surfaced with Do The Same on Shifting Peaks, UK bass duo Mak & Pasteman add their names to the long list of artists that run their own label. The reception to releases in the ensuing period for Lobster Boy and Naked Naked have proved that this West Yorkshire pair have a willing audience for such a move and it will be interesting to see if Materials is used solely as a platform for their own work or whether they'll use it to nurture new talent too. Naturally they helm the debut release which brandishes an upfront bass-tech-house hybrid on the A Side in "Jam One", whilst "Formation 131" sees M&P doff their hats to the sound of darkside jungle.

Review: Rippling rhythms, crackling white noise and muffled, hissing beats dominate for the most part of Mak & Pasteman's delectable "What Love Is". Setting the tone for their release on Car Crash Set, the pair go in with the deep, heavy rhythms, pulsing beats, hissing percussion and eerie vocal which hides behind the rest of the music somehow. A midway breakdown adds a brief moment of melancholy reflection before we return to the main tune. "So Much" continues in much the same manner, with sparse beats in a gentle, humming soundscape, broken by a labored groan and dripping SFX and pattering percussion. A must buy, right here, right now.

Review: Second time around for Mak and Pasteman's "Playboy", this time in glistening "VIP" form, backed by a string of new remixes. For those who enjoy their garage to flicker between fizzling haf-step and bombastic tropical rhythms, "Playboy VIP" should be essential. Remix wise, choose between the cut-up wobble of Udachi's remix, the breakdowns-and-dubstep-on-speed flex of the Clicks & Whistles version, and the snappy bounce of the Subio remix. There are also three new reworks of "Jungle Juice". Of these, it's the fairground two-step and call-and-response madness of the Palle Remix that most impresses, though there's something deliciously raw about Mike G's heavy rework.

Review: Upcoming UK house pairing Mak & Pasteman show a healthy respect for the best of Detroit and London on this new release on Shifting Peaks. The essential title tune "Do The Same" is smothered in strong dreamy pads a la Derrick Carter, but spiced up hugely by an addictive vocal hook that's layered perfectly over blunt kicks and Carl Craig-style arpeggios. "Lost" is a more withdrawn and haunted 2-step winner, while "Mode" takes a familiar Junior Reed refrain but frames it perfectly over some rough snares and tough, grimy bass. An excellent release and definite names to follow during the course of the year.

Review: A bass-loving UK duo who are able to bust out quality bangers across a wide-range of genres, Mak & Pasteman turn in two stand-outs on this new Hot N Heavy release. "Playboy" is a pepped-up half-stepper with a glitched out bassline, a sea of astral arpeggios and a Machinedrum-esque use of R&B acapellas that fire over the track in a head-spinning array of pitches. "Jungle Juice" on the other hand rocks a UKF beat with nasty grime bass and an excellent, DJ Mujava-esque lead sound thrown in.

Review: Mak & Pasteman deliver their long awaited debut for Sounds Of Sumo, with an EP that cannily blurs the lines between bass, dubstep and UK funky to spectacular effect. "Chakra" takes an Indian string sample and combines it with a growling bassline and funky snare rhythm, whilst "Move Something" is a fast moving bass roller with warm synth buildup and sweet vocals that recall Joy Orbison's early cuts. "Get With The Program" meanwhile sees the pair deliver a late night groover which filter a 90s house spirit through old school jungle rhythms, whilst "Heat" takes furious vocal pitching and melds it with a percussive masterclass to create a unique take on the big room sound. The EP comes with an embarrassment of remix related riches, from Tommy Kid, Bondax, Click and Kingsin, with CDBL's furious reworking of "Chakra" and Real's melodically rich reworking of "Heat", (which recalls James Blake at his finest) standing out for praise.
