Malouane is Clement Mallein from Paris, who follows in the local tradition of creating sexy, late night deepness that exists behind a thick haze of smoke, if catch our drift. The influence of Pepe Bradock, DJ Gregory and DJ Deep can be heard all throughout this EP and when you've got reference points like these across your work - you're definitely in our good books. For local imprint In The Box, the 'Long Way For The Homies' EP follows up a great one by Marion Poncet (Traumer) and is the kind of dusty, sampladelic deep house that sits somewhere between the Three Chairs sound of Detroit and the sunkissed MPC jams of Berlin's Money $ex crew. From the sexy late night mood lighting of the title track and the lo-slung smokers delight that is "Keep Yo Mama Clean". There's a great remix of it up next - a sombre yet emotive rendition by Times Are Ruff that takes it further into the afterhours and Cody Currie's neon-lit boogie down version which by contrast brings something more uplifting.
For their first foray into the world of the compilation style EP, Secret Crunch has gathered together an impressive cast of little known and fast-rising producers. Local Talk regular Sameed kicks things off with the warm, sugary and luscious, sample-heavy deep house bounce of "Pho", before Kian T impresses via the dreamy deep house grooves and lilting electrofunk synth solos of EP standout "As I". Lady Blaktronika provides some wonderfully evocative vocals on Jonna's rhythmically skewed but effortlessly groovy "You Make Me Do Things", while Malouane wraps ultra-deep chords and barely audible piano samples around a bouncy, jazz break-propelled deep house groove on the excellent "Got Robbed in a Forest".
