Following on from the release of their Dominonation album for BPitch Control back in January, Argy and Mama are given the remix treatment by two sizable names within the European house and techno fraternity. York's Hot Since 82 gets excitable with his version of "Recluse", starting out in a restrained late night fog before opening up with Mama's vocals and some choice tech house stabs that make all the right moves. Meanwhile Bloc Party front man turned house producer Kele Okereke has a jolly time whipping "Deep Found Vibe" up into a chord laden bouncer loaded with garage swing and an anthemic hook.
Vocalist Simone Olayemi Adefikayo Ogunbunm, better known simply as Mama, has a long track record of featuring on other people's records, including those by Tiefschwarz, Hannah Holland and Argy. Here, she returns to occasional home Batty Bass for a single of her own, produced by Toy Tonics twosome Black Loops. The full "long version" is something of a beast: an Afro-tinged chunk of dub house/deep house fusion, in which Ogunbumm's poetic vocals rise above alien chords, skewed analogue bass and ricocheting percussion hits. It's really rather good, as are the accompanying remix. UK veteran Ashley Beedle delivers a deliciously deep and sun-kissed Afro-house interpretation, before W Jeremy unfurls the tougher and chunkier - but still rich and woozy - Deep Rhythm Mix.
Whoever thinks that dance music can't have a political consciousness should acquaint themselves with the Schwarz brothers' latest release. The Life & Death remix has a subtle backdrop, with Tiefschwarz using understated rhythms and lithe, shuffling drums against which to create their message. The real centre piece though are Mama's vocals; rich, soulful and slightly melancholic - and not unlike Boy George's singing - they will leave the listener looking for righteous revenge on the bankers and bureaucrats who have brought the modern world to the brink of the abyss. The Rampa & Re you remix meanwhile is destined for club use, its dubbed out drums and vocal snippet echoing over a soaring electronic bass.
