Review: Surfacing on Live At Robert Johnson is Geoff Kirkwood's Man Power project direct outta Newcastle Upon Tyne. With labels like Optimo Trax, Skint, DFA and Throne Of Blood all signing up the act in the past, it's fresh we now see the Man Power surface for Frankfurt's vibrant house scene. Turning in three tracks, a looped, arpeggio and Italo influenced "Mail Order Karma" kicks off the EP featuring some finely tuned vocals from Elisabeth Elektra. "Cargo Cult" moves in to '80s action movie soundtrack territory with its LinnDrum snares, frettin' guitars, piano percussion and shining synths - all that next to a straight up instrumental of the lead cut. What goes around comes around.

Chozen
Chozen (original mix) - (5:30) 131 BPM Hot
Chozen (Max Chapman remix) - (6:03) 128 BPM
Review: Man Power follows Space Walk from earlier this year with this fine release for Moxy Muzik. Hooking up with vocalist Mizbee, the UK producer drops a rolling house groove, powered by what sounds like a double bass. Combined with Mizbee's laid back tones, it makes for a balmy, seductive track that makes winter's short days seem like an illusion. Max Chapman's take on "Chozen" follows a different path. Led by tough, punchy drums and an insistent rhythm, it sees the Resonance boss weave in jazzy keys that are still compatible with this clubby direction. It makes for a thrilling counter point to the original version.

Invisible Man (Man Power Power rework) - (6:24) 125 BPM
Snctfy Yrslf (Man Power's Breakfast Club Sandwich edit) - (6:15) 126 BPM
Review: Next up from Me Me Me, Man Power touches down for three tidy overhauls as part of the second 'Genius Steals' drop, giving us three feisty breaks-driven designs. We open up with Man Power's Hans Zimmerframe Re-Fuck of 'Tom's Duh Duh DNA', a floating drift through classic vocal samples and warm chord progressions, of course lathered with stunning drum processing. Following this, we get a moog-driven rework of 'Invisible Man', again repurposing classic vocal patterns for quite the abstract finish. Finally, we bite into the Breakfast Club Sandwich edit of 'Snctfy Yrslf', another creation dripping in chord-driven nostalgia, utilising 80's style guitar riffs and synth lines for one final throwdown. Awesome work.

Man Power - "We're Not Computers, Sebastian" - (5:43) 128 BPM
Teleseen - "Sacambu" - (7:54) 125 BPM
Review: Throne of Blood continues its 16th anniversary celebrations with this tripped out four-tracker. Pleasure Planet's "Sisters" revolves around a resonating bass and tight percussion, with the production duo adding in some spaced out tones and bleeps for good measure. Danse Alice's "Shivers (extended AdLib version)" favours a different approach; led by fuzzy guitars and a doomy groove, it sounds like a paean to Factory Records. Man Power ups the tempo and intensity levels on "We're Not Computers, Sebastian" to deliver an acid-soaked club banger, while Teleseen's "Sacambu" explores a deep house sound while maintaining a scuffled groove and half-heard vocal samples.

Praxis - (3:00) 117 BPM
Review: "Currency is a cancer/Nihilism's not the answer/Capital is not our master/It's a symptom of the cancer"... we're firmly in the realms of agit-pop here as Man Power teams up with Junto Club & Club Tularosa on a bombastic slab of politically-oriented Italo/New Beat with a spoken vocal. If that's all a bit redolent of 80s performance art for you, though, then there's an accompanying instrumental version, while completing the EP (and credited to Man Power alone) are 'The Dogma Of Mill', which recalls classic early 90s techno from the likes of T99 or The Hypnotist, and the fluttering, pulsating, deceptively funky 'Praxis'.

In Your Palm (No More Words Version) - (6:01) 104 BPM
Review: Something of an all-star collaboration here, as Me Me Me chief Man Power and former DFA Records stalwart Juan MacLean join forces as Juan Power. The headline attraction is arguably 'In Your Palm', where Mizbee's emotive vocals rise above a deliciously dirty, throbbing TB-303 bassline, sustained deep space chords, undulating acid lines and chugging house beats. It comes accompanied by a more stripped back, vocal-free 'No More Words' mix, plus two tidy bonus cuts: druggy slo-mo throb-job 'Communion' and the retro-futurist ambient soundscape 'Ascending To Florus', which features an impactful and thought-provoking (sampled) spoken word vocal.

Review: Spun Out is a London-based artist booking agency which has been run by Caroline Hayes for over 20 years, that looked after the life and times of the late great Andrew Weatherall alongside his partnership with Sean Johnston under their A Love From Outer Space moniker. More of that Frightful Oompty Boompty Music is a tribute to the 'Guv'nor' which showcases artists from the agency's roster. Timothy J.Fairplay serves up the chugging dark disco of "Reality Rules", Paranoid London deliver some strobed-out and proper old-school techno on "Spinning Out", go deep into the exotic on Mehmet Aslan's hazy "Shizowaves" and feel the neon-lit jack of Fantastic Twins's "Kali's Tongue Was A Weapon".

UIUAWIO - (5:43) 126 BPM
Psychedeletricity - (8:09) 126 BPM Hot
Review: Man Power aka Geoff Kirkwood returns to Optimo with a fine two-track release. "UIUAWIO" is an irresistible, chugging affair, with Kirkwood introducing tripped out sensibilities such as niggling acid lines and breathy vocal samples. The tribal percussion that he layers over these elements only serves to add to the track's out there feeling. "Psychedelectricity" is supposedly inspired by Man Power's love of comic books, and as its title suggests, there is a psychedelic vibe throughout. Once again, he uses evocative vocals, and, combining them on this occasion with warbling 303s, delivers an understated but effective slice of modern acid house.

Review: Sven years ago, Throne of Blood released the debut single from Geordie Geoff Kirkwood under the now familiar Man Power pseudonym. Here he returns to the American imprint for the first time since, keen to show how his production style has developed since then. There's plenty to set the pulse racing throughout, from the trippy, early morning throb of 'Severin', which sounds like a percussion loving techno head's take on Rinder and Lewis' deliciously druggy electro-disco cover of 'Willie and the Hand Jive' (minus the camp vocals), and the acid-fired, synth-laden psychedelic jack of 'Devil's Island', to the rushing, techno-tempo beats, trance style sequenced bass and star-fall synth sounds of closing cut 'Carino'.

Review: Man Power follows last year's inaugural Bed Wetter album with another introspective work focused on ambient and drone-led compositions. There's a neo-classical tinge to the melancholic "Calm (The Routine Safety Of Patterns)", while on "Gratitude (Again For The "First Time)", sonorous synths ebb and flow majestically. There is a more serene feeling on "Patience (A Life In The Day)", thanks to its combination of understated horns and ambient washes. Despite following a slower pace, at times this is also a deeply unsettling work; the darker side of the human psyche is audible on the jarring "Confusion (Pulling At A Thread)", the psychologist's couch conversation samples of "Paranoia (Different)" and the chilling, layered "Depression (The Loop)". It's a difficult but compelling listen.

As The Cube Is To The Square - (7:52) 131 BPM
Review: Hot on the heels of the release of his first single of 2021, the bustling, breakbeat-powered rave intensity of 'Sorted', Man Power returns to action with something equally as impactul. In its original form 'Monkey' does a brilliant job in balancing euphoric and sleazy electronic elements, with sparkling chords and excitable stabs vying for sound space with jacking house drums and a near psychedelic acid bassline. Those thrillingly wayward TB-303 sounds come to the fore on the accompanying 'Beyonders Testify mix', which also features ethereal flute sounds, foreboding bass, sparse electro drums and some lovely vocalisations. To round off a typically quirky EP, the Geordie producer gets into throbbing techno mode on late-night workout 'As The Cube Is To The Square'.

Hawkins (Biesmans remix) - (6:26) 124 BPM Hot
Review: Joris Biesmans recent debut album, Trains, Planes & Automobiles, offered a scintillating, synth-heavy fusion of electro, Italo-diso and classic-sounding house. There's a similar feel to this fine collection of remixes. Adana Twins lead the way with a refreshingly squelchy, club-ready old school electro re-fix of 'Save The Night', before Alex Medina turns 'Cold Void' into a bubbly trip through analogue-rich cold-wave territory with added melodic clout. Geordie hero Man Power's revision of 'Cosmic Cruise' is a delightful fusion of cascading synthesizer sounds, dreamy chords and locked-in acid house grooves, while Biesmans' own rework of 'Hawkins' is a spiralling, uplifting electro roller with spacey sounds and filthy bass aplenty.

Review: Alan Dixon has been a producer on the rise for some time, so it makes sense that he's decided to launch his own label, Love Attack. Release number one comes courtesy of exiled Geordie Geoff Kirkwood AKA Man Power, who offers up a trio of typically well-made tracks. Kirkwood impressively sets the tone with opener 'Copheid Variable (Part 1)', a drowsy, string-drenched chunk of evocative dancefloor electronica rich in deep sub-bass, creepy chords and densely layered Latin percussion, before offering up the hushed, early morning house hypnotism of 'Blazhko Effect'. The EP's unifying theme of starry, detached melodiousness is arguably best exemplified by closing cut 'Copheid Variable (Part 2)', a looser and even more emotive interpretation of the startling opening track.

Review: Take it back to the mid-20-teens and Newcastle Upon Tyne's Man Power, aka Geoff Kirkwood, was only just getting out of bed. With early releases on Jennifer Cardini's Correspondent and later John Talabot's Hivern Discs, Man Power has taken it all the way through ESP Institute, Optimo Trax and Throne Of Blood to Skint, DFA and of course the project's home label, Me Me Me. With a spotlight over three years of remix work that sees Me Me Me lift a selection of remixes made over Bryan Ferry to Daniele Baldelli & DJ Rocca, Man Power takes it back to the roots with a rework of Woolf vs Projections and Tronik Youth! With the heaviness of Man Power's remix to Ess O Ess a highlight too, expect a touch of acid, EBM, Italo and kosmische inspirations woven in and around bustling drum machines, analog synths and plenty of Man Power.

Review: Economy is Man Power's second artist album and follows a collaboration last year with Juan McClean as Juan Power. "A Day Seems Wasted When We Don't Meet" starts the album off in a brooding manner, with its booming bass and ghostly melodies unravelling over a skeletal rhythm, and "Jesus Toy" follows in a similar mode with its hollowed out drums and eerie synth lines. On "It Was Only An Orange", robust drums see Man Power draw on his love of disco, allied with woozy synths and ticking percussion. While there are more uptempo tracks here, including the insistent "Tygers", the real strength of Economy lies in Man Power's ability to craft teased out, atmospheric chuggers like "Boneyard".

Review: Next up on Me Me Me is label owner Man Power with a riotous release. It starts off with the pulsating "Night War", which fuses dramatic stabs with a solid, pulsating electronic groove. On "1011", Man Power opts for a more grimy approach, with a scuffled rhythm and staccato beats underpinning churning chords. Meanwhile "Sweet Cornelius" sees him deliver a more stripped back take on this track, with noisy bleeps and rickety drums prevailing. On "Night War", he opts for a more upbeat approach, as wild electronic stabs unfold over a pumping groove and incessant snare rolls. Rounding off the release, Zombies in Miami delivers a tough, acid-heavy take on "War".

Review: Man Power (AKA long-serving DJ/producer Geoff Kirkwood) has gone to great lengths to play down the significance of this sophomore set, even going so far as to slap the words "This is not an album" on the front cover. However you want to describe it, "Now Now Now 1" is a quality collection of cuts. Beginning with the atmospheric, bleep sporting mid-tempo throb of "Ghost", Kirkwood serves up an analogue rich selection of club-ready cuts that cannily meld elements of Italo-disco, freestyle, acid jack, tribal workouts (see percussive standout "Murder Depot"), big room humdingers (the piano-sporting, acid-flecked brilliance of "Bullwinkle") and hazy European tech-house (the horror-fired hum of "Simplex").

Review: Geoff "Man Power" Kirkwood has been friends with Futureboogie Recordings founder Dave Harvey for years, so it's little surprise to see him releasing an EP on the on-point Bristol imprint. "Barranquilla Trifle" is arguably one of his most ear-catching cuts to date, too - an exotic, humid and mind-altering fusion of bubbly electronics, glassy-eyed synthesizer riffs and hustling drum machine beats propelled forwards by wave upon wave of mind-altering acid lines. Mancunian hero Ruf Dug's accompanying "Zouk Remix", which sounds like a long lost synth-zouk classic from the original Balearic era, is arguably even better. The cosmic deep house shuffle of bonus cut "Kaon" completes a superb package.

Review: Despite releasing a rake of EPs over the past two years for Correspondant, ESP Institute and Optimo Trax, Man Power aka Geoff Kirkwood shows no sign of slowing down. The talented artist's latest missive appears on the newly minted DGTL label, and is an essential release for anyone who follows his idiosyncratic sound. "The Duellist" is the big track here, focusing on slinky piano keys, a buzzing acid line and frosty synths over a sleek, pulsing groove. "El Mago Del Tiempo" has an epic feeling, with Kirkwood fusing sublime synths with an electronic disco rhythm. Meanwhile his weird side, which is never too far from the surface, bubbles up on the slow-motion "Put Your Hands On The Car (& Get Ready To Die)".

Review: Geoff Kirkwood aka Man Power has a small but enviable catalogue, with releases on labels such as Correspondant and ESP Institute. For his latest outing, he delivers on Optimo Trax, another respected outlet for left of centre dance music. On the title track, he drops a pulsing groove, around which he adds in eerie textures and some spoken word samples, which appear to come from US politics. It makes for an unusual, hypnotic dance floor track. "HDS" follows a different tact; it sees Kirkwood deliver subtle break beats - one of the longest running themes on Optimo Trax releases - reverberating vocal chants and a droning sound scape, as another unnamed vocal narrative plays out. It makes for one of the best left field releases of 2017.

Review: James 'Fucking' Friedman reckons that in the three years since Moon Rock Volume 1 came out on his New York City based Throne Of Blood imprint, interest and attention in ambient and cosmic music has broadened and deepened. Well, hey that's a fair call and with Moon Rock Volume 4, the label is once again rounding up a shitload of weird-ass kosmische sounds. According to the label, the compilation was conceived in sides; six distinct sets of music that move through a range of styles and sounds, from chill ambient excursions to darker droning noise. Danny Passarella's imaginary soundtrack "Carousel Rising"is guided by a clever use of arpeggio, Tel Aviv indie dance hero Moscoman impresses as always with more cosmic weirdness on The Edge Of The Earth" while Versatile Records legend Gilb'r presents "Arpeggio Island"which doesn't need much explanation. London duo Vactrol Park impress as always with another deep vintage synth exploration on "Islands Of The Delta".

Review: Mexico-based Geordie Man Power has been on the rise for some time, picking up plaudits for the quality of his releases on Throne of Blood, ESP Institute, Hivern Discs and Correspondant. Now, he's decided to go it alone, launching the MeMeMe label as a vehicle for his own productions. "Tachyon" is something of a sleazy, late night treat, with the British ex-pat concentrating the action around a deliciously dirty, mutant Italo arpeggio, nagging electronic loops, and punchy drum machine percussion. DJ Tennis takes the track in a different direction, smothering Man Power's sleazy groove in melodious marimba lines, drowsy chords and elastic electronics.

Review: According to Lovefingers' typically eccentric sales notes, these two tracks from Man Power (AKA similarly quirky producer Geoff Kirkwood) will "put a wrench in your holiday". Kirkwood has been globetrotting a lot lately, and both cuts here sound like they were inspired by visits to hot, steamy countries. He kicks things off with the subtle positivity of "The Tourist", where swirling chords and tumbling synthesizer melodies ride a busy, bouncy, and pleasingly off-kilter, tribal drum groove. While excellent, it lacks the surging positivity, glistening Balearic touches and wonky analogue bottom-end of flipside "Oye", which sounds like an Adriatic anthem in waiting.

Review: Having previously released Orange, Blue, Green and Pink "collections", Eskimo Recordings continues its' colour-coordinated theme with a Yellow compilation. As usual, the collection draws on material from both established names and lesser-known talents, and does a bang-up job joining the dots between hazy Balearic pop, nu-disco, indie-dance and colourful, soft-focus house. While it's all of a high standard, we're particularly enjoying the sparkling dub disco-goes-Balearic flex of Satin Jackets' dub of Du Tonc's "We Can Hold On", the trippy analogue bump of Man Power's "Fisky", the splendid rush of Luxury's baggy disco groover "Breathe", and the camp, Italo-disco thrust of "El Wild" by the brilliantly named Zombies In Miami.
