Review: Most labels and collectives are challenged to last a decade in electronic music's fleeting landscape, but so far Kompakt has endured for twice this lifespan. This is largely due to the fact that the Cologne operation boasts a tightly-knit group of artists who continue to release on its many labels. For the twentieth edition of the annual Total compilation series, many of those producers come correct; Robag Wruhme and founder Michael Mayer both deliver ponderous deep techno tracks, while Jurgen Paape goes even farther, veering into guitar-spangled melancholia on "Vox Acris". This introspective mood seeps through to more overt dance floor tracks, with Sascha Funke's eerie "Atze" and Voigt & Voigt's "Schopper Da Leu" delivering understated but impactful results.

Review: Returning to Kompakt's side-label after two years, Marc Romboy shows radically different facets to his musical identity. While the German producer is best known for his rousing electro house sound, on Speicher 114, he delves much deeper. Clearly inspired by the dark bass techno of Suburban Knight and Joey Beltram's Code 6 project, "Stalker" is a dark, pumping groove, full of weird tonal blips and bleeps. On the flip side, "Beyond" sees Romboy deliver an even greater surprise. Shot through with haunting piano lines and mysterious undercurrents, it's like his own dance floor take on a John Carpenter horror movie soundtrack.

Review: As one of the most feted labels in techno, it's not hard to imagine that Cocoon receives a ton of demos. Fittingly then, the Dots & Pearls compilation series shines a light on the type of music that is bubbling up from the underground via the label's inbox. Youandme's"Claret Loss" sets a high standard, with its lush strings underpinned by a robust groove. Similarly, Florian Hollerith's "Ohrenzirkus" - which also features on label owner Sven V?th's Sound of the 19th Season - strikes a balance between the musical and the functional as deranged horns unravel over a gritty back drop. Maintaining this melodic feeling is Petar Dundov's beautifully mournful "Pyroelectric". However, there is another side to this equation, with Marc Romboy dropping the menacing bass-led "Sequential Error". Irrespective of the mood however, Dots & Pearls V is sure to become an integral part of this year's clubbing soundtrack.

Review: John Digweed looks back on a terrific year that was 2018 - not to mention the 20th anniversary of his Bedrock label. This last year saw him serve up the Bedrock XX box set, team up with good mate Nick Muir on the terrific "Crazy Diamond" in addition to his awesome Live In Tokyo mix CD - so there's plenty to celebrate. Featured here are some of the year's highlights and exclusives alike by heroes of deep tech house such as: Booka Shade with their moody cruiser "Rosebud", Belgian veteran Jimmy Van M appears several times but is most on-form on "Cobalt", Systematic head honcho Marc Romboy with his impressive sci-fi epic "Cosmo" and the return of trance legend Oliver Lieb on the riveting "Epoxi".

Review: It's that time again: Cologne institution Kompakt return with their annual round up of what's hot in contemporary house and techno - all with the distinct hallmarks in harmony with their aesthetic: deep, intelligent and absolutely evocative. Rest assured that all the usual suspects appear - label stalwarts such as Jorg Burger, Jurgen Paape, Gui Boratto and of course head honchos the Voigt brothers. Elsewhere there are some regulars and newbies alike such as Los Angeleno Sonns on the sun-kissed and tripped-out "Tame" (feat Beesh), veteran John Tejada with the bold melodics of "Detector" (a cut from his brilliant new Dead Start Program LP), lo-slung cosmo-balearica by Ghost Vision on "Zuul" and the legendary Jake Williams aka Rex The Dog on the epic dance floor drama of "Crasher". Another tremendously curated compilation that's essential listening.

Review: Germany's Voltaire Music return with some heavy hitters in techno, tech house, deepness and beyond. While it's mainly a Deutsche affair for the most part, they even managed to rope in Croatian hypnotic techno veteran Petar Dundov - who in conjunction with Systematic's Marc Romboy delivers the spiralling and melodic sorcery of "Caper Tran". Elsewhere, there's some epic dancefloor drama like on Tim Engelhardt's remix of "Florian Kruse & Hendrik Burkhard's "Crack In The Wall" featuring some heartfelt vocals by Mi.li.an. Highly lauded mastering engineer Hannes Bieger delivers the moody and entrancing "Strato" geared for those heads down moments under the strobelight and Frankfurt's finest Sascha Dive - he of Deep Vibes fame - delivers the goods as always on the darkroom dub of "Renegade" (Long version).
