Review: Continuing in a proud tradition that stretches back two decades and includes artists like Anderson Noise and Renato Cohen, Marcal delivers a killer Brazilian techno EP for Rekids. Reduction Pt 1 follows his releases on Phobiq and Sam Paganini's JAM, and shows why this emerging artist is gaining recognition: "'Ainozama" is a fast-paced tribal roller laced with rave stabs, while on "Cherry On Top", he goes down a deeper route, with filtered chords and ticking percussion unfolding over a lithe rhythm. "Heart Race" sees him head down the kind of dense, bleeps route that Sleeparchive and Mike Parker usually inhabit, while on "Estado de Transe", a collaboration with Andc and Gabal, Marcal effortlessly straddles the tribal and minimal dimensions with considerable aplomb.

Review: 2020 is a year that many people will want to forget, but as this compilation shows, it was still a time of remarkably creativity. This is borne out by Regent's "Drama", a crystalline, tranced out groove, while in stark contrast, Vinicius Honorio's "Rock Da House" is a visceral jacking affair that has echoes of DJ Rush. In between these two ends of the spectrum are deadly effective club techno contributions from Yan Cook, with the turbo bass-led "Order and Steve Parker's acid-heavy "Resonate". Best Of also impresses by covering wide range of styles - as A.Paul's rolling "Incidence" and Re:Axis bleepy "Unveil" ably demonstrate.

Review: Following releases for Rekids and Hardgroove, Marcal drops this fine four-tracker for Dustin Zahn's label. Opening track "Bionic Jungle", with its bouncing rhythm and tribal samples, sounds inspired by 4th Sign period CJ Bolland. "Moravex's Paradox" inhabits a similar space, but on this occasion, the arrangement is more streamlined and is honed for contemporary dance floors. "Nothing About the United States" is a no-nonsense, heads-down affair, with Marcal combining dense drum patterns with a lithe rhythm for maximum impact. On "Don't Fear The Three", he opts for a similar approach - this time tough kicks and firing hi hats underpin insistent stabs, with devastating effect.

Review: Following releases from Hemka, P.Leone, Shinedoe and SRVD, Rekids' sister imprint returns with more of its 'grittier, fully techno focused remit.' This instalment in the Reduction series belongs to Brazilian producer Marcal, featuring five powerful cuts in the vein of his contribution to the series' last volume. Hard hitting and hypnotic minimal techno in the vein of Robert Hood can be heard on "Sentinel" and "Rolling Sway" respectively, equally mesmerising is the heads down, peak time energy of "Jackie" and finally Marcal teams up with homeboy Alex Justino on the drum-driven percolator jack of "This Body" making for another great DJ tool.

Review: With heavyweight support from the likes of Berghain's Ben Klock and Marcel Dettmann, it's no surprise that Marcal's star is in the ascent - and this release is a reminder of why he is receiving this acclaim. "Enemy 9 and "Lithurgia" are relentless, steely jacking affairs, with the former's stop-start analogue energy calling to mind the 90s work of Luke Slater, another Marcal fan. There is another, less frenetic side to this producer's sound, articulated on the dubbed out "Machidan", but in the main, this collection will turn heads thanks to its dark, dizzying energy, audible through the walking bass and dystopian synths of "Oboro".

Review: Laerte Marcal is the rising Techno producer and DJ from Goiania, Brazil known for his hot releases on REKIDS, Enemy or Planet Rhythm, and this year's riveting debut full-length Time Is What A Clock Reads on Suara. His latest is on Ben Sims' esteemed Hardgroove, featuring functional tackle for the main room on the Going Forward EP. Thundering Jeff Mills style 909 tom drums underpin melodic Detroit style motifs on opening cut "Neuropeptide" before things go deeper underground on the strobing, heads-down warehouse stomp of "The Only Way Is Forward" and he teams up with Gabal & Invie for their best Robert Hood impression on the hypnotic "Same Address".

Review: Having already released records on key imprints like Rekids and Sam Paganini's JAM, Marcal is the latest emerging producer to grace the Planet Rhythm label. Timeless gets off to an impressive start with the wiry, sprung rhythm and lean drums of "Suffocating" setting an intense tone, while on the title track, Marcal ups the ante with a relentless, churning chord sequence that plays out over pounding kicks. "Armlock", a collaboration with Vinicius Honorio, is a linear, tribal workout featuring ghostly vocals and razor sharp percussion. Meanwhile, on "Tensorflow", Marcal gets together with Gabal for a low-slung groove that unravels to the sound of icy synths and a foreboding bass.

Review: S-File brings together some of the highlights from the GND catalogue for this diverse but universally dance floor-focused compilation. Mark Broom's dense version of David Caretta's "Vicious Game" and S-File's own sample heavy, party-ready "Shelter" provide a high-octane start to the release, while Uncertain and Buitrago's contributions introduce some house flavours to the compilation. Marcal's "It Doesn't Resemble" sees the intensity levels ramp up a few notches thanks to its ominous bass and rattling percussion, while in contrast the stripped back "Dxd 2.0" from Deadwalkman & Deraout contains echoes of 90s minimalism in its repetitive tones and sharp, metallic claps.
