Review: Glaswegian imprint Avoidant presents Planet Destroyed, a mammoth various artist compilation featuring the leading names in underground electro sounds. Counting legends and newcomers alike, this is the definitive dystopian fantasy soundtrack. Berghain resident Marcel Dettmann contributes the exclusive track 'Motorman' which has an industrial edge that's typical of his style, while local legends Slam team up with Autonomous on the brooding sci-fi beats of "Into The Light", Luz1e throws down some serious computer funk on "Draw The Line", No Static 's Ara-U delivers the wonky acid of "GUAGUA" and San Francisco's Amber Cox (Slumber) ventures into deeper territory on the emotive cybernetics of 'Borean'.

Water (feat Ryan Elliott) - (5:34) 133 BPM Hot
Pxls - (2:12) 132 BPM
(Batteries Not Included) - (4:50) 130 BPM
Review: Almost a decade after the release of his last solo album, Marcel Dettmann delivers this follow-up. Unlike many of his peers, there is no concept at the heart of Programming, rather it's a reflection of a continuous period spent in the studio. This explains why it shifts in style, with its author never staying in one place for too long. "Suffice to Predict" is a dense, bass-heavy roller, while on "Renewal Theory" spiky Detroit rhythms prevail. These dance floor tracks sit between the ambient swirls of "Coral" and "Transport". Elsewhere, Dettmann explores Motor City influences, with the lithe electro of "Pxls" and the Juan Atkins-sounding brittle groove of "Water". The mood darkens on the droning, repetitive "Batteries Not Included" and "Selective Dissolution" but as the expansive title track demonstrates, Marcel Dettmann's music takes in many perspectives.

Music Is Playing - (4:28) 130 BPM
Review: The fourth release on Faith Beat reveals a different side to Marcel Dettmann. Gone is the Berghain resident's gritty warehouse sound, replaced by a deeper, more considered approach. While "Music Is Playing" centres on a jittery rhythm, it features dramatic stabs and frenetic percussion, drawing on early Detroit techno for inspiration. "Meramo" leans towards the musical US house sound of Balance and Prescription, supported by a robust groove, while on "Juper", Dettmann explores this sound further, as skipping drums provide the basis for jazzy melodies. The title track is the only instance where he veers into a darker direction, but in this instance it's moody bass tones rather than Dettmann's signature concrete kicks that set the tone.

Activator / Namuan
Marcel Dettmann - "Activator" - (6:12) 130 BPM Hot
Zenker Brothers - "Namuan" - (6:10) 130 BPM
Review: The 50 Weapons farewell continues in style with this release from Marcel Dettmann and the Zenkers. The MDR boss has been quiet this year on the release front, but "Activator" shows that he hasn't lost his ability to craft hypnotic techno, as stripped back, stepping beats underpin a wave of hypnotic, 'caught in a wind tunnel'-style sounds. The Zenker Brothers' "Namuan" is more indebted to 90s techno; insistent drums and percussion clatter and clang like iron bars flung on a concrete floor, as chords surge and climax in the background. There are just three releases left now and it will be interesting to hear what Modeselektor come up with next.

Bambounou - "Deepstaria" - (8:52) 130 BPM
Review: The quality of the 50 Weapons output is always supreme and our German friends really do know how to pull together a diverse and extensive collection of their latest catalogue signings - a sure buy for anyone wanting a glimpse into the world of the most cutting-edge bass music around. Among the twelve stormers we have Dark Sky's "Shutter Speed" which pulls together wacky basslines and rolling tech beats; Addison Groove's usual footwork magic represented here as "I Go Boom"; "Malfunction (Despair) by the nuttiest technoid producer known to man - A Made Up Sound - and even Marcel Dettman's foreboding "Linux" monster. An essential collection.

Test-File
Error - (5:41) 131 BPM
Metalloid - (5:47) 130 BPM Hot
Review: Test-File is Marcel Dettmann's first solo record in over five years. Despite the passage of time, it sees him focus again on straddling experimental sounds and more dance-floor friendly arrangements. This is especially the case on the title track, where the Berghain resident blends stepping, rickety rhythms with ghostly soundscapes. On "Ascending", he focuses on a straighter, tribal rhythm, while Dettmann's exploration of the dance floor also sees him unleash the stripped back, oddball house of "Autumn77". However, experimentation is never too far from his agenda, and the water-drop abstractions and eerie, bass groans of "Torch" provide a reminder as to why he is so revered - on and away from the dance floor.

The World Tonight - (5:54) 130 BPM
Review: Quite a number of techno fans will go weak at the knees when they spot this expansive collaboration between longtime friends and occasional studio partners Marcel Dettmann and Ben Klock. It's their first combined release since 2013. Every one of the 7 tracks are full of high quality, atmospheric, late night techno workouts, from the creepy riffs and off-kilter drums of "Phantom Studies", and the horror-influenced post-dubstep shuffle of "The Room", to the raging, mind-altering dancefloor heaviness of "Bay Boy" and sparse, minimalist techno closer "The Tenant". Given their abilities as producers, we'd expect nothing less than superbly produced, club-ready cuts. Predictably, Phantom Studies delivers that in spades.

Foundry - (5:10) 130 BPM
Review: The latest release on Marcel Dettmann's label starts with a surprise; "Onto (2010 edit)" sees the MDR owner in mellow form, as warm piano keys and blissed out chords coalesce over a housey beat. It's only a temporary arrangement however, and "Escape" sees him tease out a dense, dub-coated groove and a slightly stepping rhythm. Both "Nautilus" and "Foundry" mark a return to the purist approach that inspires much of Dettmann's production and the totality of his DJing. Consisting of intricate, stripped back rhythms and ticking, bubbling percussive slivers, they are less abrasive than early MDR records and provide further evidence that Dettmann is maturing as a producer.

Review: You have to admire Ostgut Ton's ambition. While celebrating a decade in dance music with a compilation of exclusive, previously unheard music is now standard practice amongst leading underground labels, few would have the balls to release it with such a killer tracklisting as Zehn. Across the 30 tracks (count 'em!) you get a who's who of Berghain and Panorama Bar associates delivering a quite outstanding selection of left-of-centre techno and deep European house, with Marcel Dettmann, Boris, Virginia, Steffi, DVS1, Martyn, Tobias and Ben Klock all featuring. Highlights naturally come thick and fast, from the spacey electronics, heady textures and hypnotic rhythms of Function's "DX3 Analog Bass Seq", and the rush-inducing, string-laden house warmth of Matthew Styles' remix of Dinky's "Planes", to the picturesque intelligent techno of Doms & Deykers.

Review: Australia's Balance Music is known for its quality mixes by the very finest in the underground music circuit. With previous compilations by the likes of New York's Danny Tenaglia, Deetron and Funk D'Void, among others, this is as close to a Fabric mix as you can get without those shiny tin cases. Ex-minimal legend turned all-out techno queen Magda steps up for number 27 in the series, and it's nothing but vibes on this one. Amalgamating shreds of stripped back techno - Marcel Dettmann, DVS1, Samuli Kemppi - together with newer, more underground sounds from some of the most cutting-edge labels around - Marco Bernardi's Sandman project, TTT's Minor Science, XDB and Shackleton - the Minus legend shows why she's still one of the best in the game and a true expert at evolving her aesthetic. A great mix, dig in.

Panorama Bar 06 Part II
Deadbeat - "Woah!" - (6:24) 133 BPM
Marcel Dettmann - "Light" - (2:33) 131 BPM
Review: A second sampler for Ryan Elliott's newly dropped Panorama Bar 06 mix opens with "Take It Slow", a rugged house jam of the finest order from The Oliverwho Factory and proceeds to take in cuts from former label manager Nick Hoppner, Deadbeat, Dettmann and Sushitech mainstay Makam. Individually the standard of these exclusives is remarkably high and it will be interesting to see how Elliott has slotted them all together for the free to download mix. If we had to guess, Deadbeat's superb glistening house burner "Woah" would make an appearance towards the end thanks to his high tempo, whilst Dettmann's swirling layers of ambience on "Light" feel very much like a set opener.

Review: Amid a whole stack of MDR represses of late the label throws in three new cuts of older Dettmann material remixed by arguably the top boy of UK techno. Luke Slater under his all devouring Planetary Assault Systems alias provides two remixes of "Apron" from 2009's MDR06 and another for the track "Rush". The 'PAS Tubed mix 2' of "Apron" is a jittery piece of Luke Slater brilliance that harks back to his earlier, minimal productions as Planetary Assault Systems on Peacefrog, while the 'PAS The Rhythm remix' stays true to the dusty sound Dettmann surfaced with toward the end of last decade. Meanwhile on the flip in the 'Deep Release remix' of "Rush" sees Planetary Assault Systems provides more bona fide booming techno for Berghain that re-popularised the genre several years ago.

Review: Originally released on the Berlin producer's second album, "Seduction" is less abrasive and more thoughtful than his usual fare. Over understated, tribal beats and eerie textures, Emika provides some indistinct but endearing vocals. Dettmann's own remix as Deuce is also thought-provoking rather than upfront. Over a pulsing bass and hissing percussion, he adds in screeching synth lines to add to the sense of drama. There's no danger of Dettmann or Ostgut alienating their techno audiences thanks to the remixes. Berghain resident Ryan Elliott turns "Seduction" into a rolling, driving groove, featuring a droning underbelly, insistent claps and the vocals buried deep in the arrangement. Anthony Parasole's version is impressive too, its jagged rhythms fused with what are in his hands screeching, deranged vocals.

Dettmann II
Throb - (5:37) 130 BPM
Soar - (5:12) 130 BPM
Review: Berghain resident Marcel Dettmann returns with a second album for Ostgut in the shape of the simply titled Dettmann II. Unlike Hollywood, this musical sequel to his debut self titled LP of three years packs just as hefty a punch and arrives with Marcel at his busiest. In addition to overseeing his MDR imprint and putting out a steady stream of EPs for Ostgut Ton, he's contributed two singles to Modeselektor's 50 Weapons as well as mixing an entry into Music Man's Conducted mix series. Hot on the heels of an entry into Bleep's techno-centric Green Series, Dettmann II arrives and follows a similar formula to his LP length debut. Expect a mixture of ambient soundscapes and minimalist experimental cuts going up against more uncompromising dancefloor material, and there's a high profile cast of supporting names involved too; Emika provides vocals on "Seduction" while multi-monikered Rene Pawlowitz and Levon Vincent have assisted in the production of the tracks "Aim" and "Outback".

Corebox - James Ruskin Mixes
Corebox (James Ruskin 3rd version) - (4:11) 133 BPM
Review: If Donato Dozzy plays Bee Mask then on this release James Ruskin plays Marcel Dettmann. The Blueprint boss turns in three remixes of Dettmann's "Corebox", originally taken from MDR04 (featuring "Lattice"), supplying two club crafted tracks and an ambient 3rd Version. Ruskin reworks the original's famous chords, adding overdrive and reverb in his first remix, while his Event mix strips them dry to sound more like a Baby Ford or Steve O'Sullivan production. Ruskin's ambient version again uses the chords as its centrepiece, but buries them in a soundscape made for a '70s horror film.

Marcel Dettmann - "Ride" - (6:49) 130 BPM Hot
Review: The techno-fuelled offshoot of Bleep continues apace after excellent installments from Redshape, Steffi, Objekt and Cosmin TRG amongst others. This time the techno gets even more serious as Marcel Dettmann takes up one side with the snappy "Ride". It's a playful kind of banger to be fair, injecting a funky little swing into the propulsive beats not least thanks to the prominent clap, while the synth is a catchy motif that brings plenty of light into the surroundings. Lucy's way on "Slave's March" is more obtuse, wantonly plunging into a quagmire of dub techno, gorging your senses on reverb decays and subtle, linear progression as unfurled by a master of sonic poise.

Range EP
Allies - (6:01) 130 BPM
Review: Marcel Dettmann returns with yet another EP full of dusty atmospherics and brooding minimalism. The dark synth line of "Range" wallows around sketchy percussion and filtered pulsations while the density of "Islo" ups the energy in a hectic mess of Dadub-esque drum patterns. Machine gun snares strafe the Berghain-y kicks of "Push" as otherworldly vocals breath pitched down variations of the track's title. "Allies" is Dettmann's take on party techno, but tailored entirely for flinty concretions and sturdy pylons - an absolute Berghain classic.

Review: Given her current popularity, it's no surprise to see all-conquering house hero Maya Jane Coles mixing the latest instalment of !K7's long-running DJ Kicks series. The diminutive DJ/producer is in fine form, too, mixing up typically atmospheric house cuts and clandestine deepness with saucer-eyed late night faves and forgotten B-sides (see Bozzwell's surprisingly emotional "In My Cocoon"). As a mix it's as deep, melodic and groovy as you'd expect, with a strong vocal theme running throughout. As it progresses, it tiptoes further into bleary-eyed darkroom territory, via stand-out cuts from Marcel Dettmann, Caribou (his thrilling remix of Virgo Four), Gerry Read and T Williams. Translation EP
Barrier - (2:10) 131 BPM
Translation Two - (5:32) 130 BPM
Review: Dettmann's latest EP may refer to lingustics in its title, but there is no danger that what the Berghain resident wants to achieve will get lost in translation. With the exception of the spacey soundtrack and "Apollo" samples on "Barrier", this release is all about dance floor functionality and is as stark as the imposing architecture in the club he built his reputation on. That said, "Planning" owes a great debt to Robert Hood's visceral minimalism, as Dettmann sprays shards of percussion over jarring beats. The same incessant percussive approach is audible on "Translation One", but in this instance, it's the basis for a stab-heavy, filtered rhythm. Finally, Dettmann plays tribute to a Berlin artist on "Translation Two", with its spaced out but cold bleeps reminiscent of vintage Sleeparchive.
