Review: Adeen Records is on a roll right now and this time out they welcome the Detroit hero that is Marcellus Pittman for a new and beguiling four-track EP. Known for his work with The 3 Chairs collective as well as his solo jams, this Motor City mainstay opens up with 'You Always Hank Bank One Time' which is a real mental maze of rickety loops and blurts of degraded synth. 'Another Spring Lover' is another rusty and lo-fi piece of archetypal Detroit house that is very clearly machine music but with a unique sense of human soul. 'I'm Gonna Be The Everything' is a raw drum track with sparse, heartwarming chords and 'Slick Nickle Pladium Investment' is a knackered downbeat hip-hop closer. Magnificent.

Review: Marcellus Pittman first appeared on Acid Test's 10 Years Of... compilation and Facid Trunktion is the latest iteration of this somewhat unlikely alliance. Followers of the Detroit house producer will find much to love in the title track's dense, off-kilter percussion and snappy drums - signature elements that set him apart from his peers. On "Sanskrit Body Rock", he makes a nod to the Acid Test in-house sound, with gurgling 303s unfolding over spiky hi hats and tough kicks. "Ask It Acid" further cements his relationship with the label; more direct and linear than Pittman's typical approach, it's shot through with a grimy acid line.

Review: Something of an all-star affair here, as long-serving Chicago exile James Curd (Greenskeepers, Tone Brigade) joins forces with Detroit legend (and sometime 3 Chairs and Rotating Assembly member) Marcellus Pittman for a collaborative two-track outing. Predictably, the vastly experienced duo hit the ground running with lead cut 'Shafty Riptide', where a killer TB-303 acid style bassline, quirky noises and spaced-out organ sounds ride a smooth, rolling house groove. On 'Corners', the pair explore the jazzier side of their sounds, alternating between sax and TB-303 sounds over a sparse, electro-influenced house beat and simply stunning chords. As good as we expected it to be... and then some!

Review: Acid Test has always forged its own path, and this independently minded aesthetic defines the music on the label's ten-year compilation. Lerosa's "Uneasy" and VC-118a's "Silver" are both engrossing, abstract affairs, while label mainstay Tin Man and John Tejada both deliver streamlined, pulsating takes on the acid sound. Delving into the darker corners of the 303, there's Achterbahn D'Amour with the raw, jacking "7 Edit" and Donato Dozzy's squelch fest, "Morena". Meanwhile, the rolling electro drums and subsonic tweaks of Sepehr's "Persian Acid Prince" further underlines the fact that when it comes to underground electronic music, few labels are more adventurous than Acid Test.

Review: Some 17 years after it first slipped out on wax, Theo Parrish and Marcellus Pittman's second "Essential Selections" EP is finally available to download. Naturally, it's not aged a bit, with all three tracks remaining wonderfully deep, groovy and intoxicating. The standout is undoubtedly "Evidence of the 5th Green Foot", a near 12-minute workout built around a seductively deep and hypnotic groove that comes laden with lo-fo electric piano motifs and jazzy deep house beats. The standard doesn't let up elsewhere on the EP, either. "Equality Of Patience" is a deliciously druggy and heavily percussive peak-time throb job, while "Questions Comments" is the kind of spaced-out, drum machine driven deep house box jam that both producers do so well.

Review: To celebrate 250 parties, Eamon Harkin and Justin Carter, the residents at and organisers of Mister Saturday Night, have put together this wonderful compilation. It starts with the offbeat folk of Menelik Wossenatchu's "Tezeta" and the glorious, soulful disco of Soul Bros Inc's "Pyramid". The compilation veers back towards electronic sounds on the stripped back deep house of ESB's "On Cue" and the bleepy "Aches" from Baba Stiltz. FaltyDL's "Hardcourage" bridges the gap between the abstract and dance-floor structures, Marcellus Pittman drops the acid-soaked Detroit house of "There's Somebody Out There" and Kerrier District delivers the lush electronic disco of "Let's Dance and Freak".Then & Now is a wide-eyed, freewheeling compilation that captures the long-running New York party's essence.

Review: It would be fair to say that Studio K7 has pulled off something of a coup in getting Kenny Dixon Jr. to agree to compile and mix the latest installment in the long-running DJ Kicks series. It is, somewhat remarkably, the legendary Detroiter's first commercially available mix set. This triple-vinyl edition features a whopping 19 cuts - all in unmixed form - from the 30 track mix. Musically, it's a blazed, jazzy, soulful and groovy as you'd expect, and contains a mixture of downtempo beats, nu-jazz and hazy house cuts from the likes of Flying Lotus, Dopehead, Peter Digital Orchestra, Nightmares On Wax, Soulful Session and Lady Alma.

Review: The second Sound Signature repress of the week offers a chance to re-assess the moment that the wider world was introduced to the talents of one of Detroit's most loved selectors. Released back in 1999, the Essential Selections Vol. 1 EP saw Theo collaborate with a certain Marcellus Pittman across three cuts that still sound as vibrant today. "Night Of The Sagitarius" has the loose drum arrangements and gritty low end that will appeal to contemporary ears, but it's also augmented by an almost chilling sense of melody. "Selector's Theme" is the pair in introspective mood whilst "African Roots" belongs in the canon of all time Theo greats.

Review: On its initial release in 2010, Rick Wilhite's Vibes New & Rare Music collection picked up plenty of plaudits, not least for its delicious mix of stargazing deep house from Chicago and Detroit. Here, Wilhite presents an album sampler featuring three suitably gorgeous cuts from the near-essential LP. There's a dash of simmering deep house-jazz from Glenn Underground ("Ninja"), a beatdown-meets-classic jack track from Vincent Halliburton ("Something I Feel") and a chunk of pleasing analogue deepness from Marcellus Pittman ("In Due Time"). If you missed the album first time round, now's the time to dive in.

Review: Glaswegian label Seventh Sign score something of a coup, securing the services of Detroit machine funk technician Marcellus Pittman for their 21st release. The 3 Chairs member (alongside Kenny Dixon Jr., Rick Wilhite and Theo Parrish) opens proceedings with the tense 303 squelch-out that is "The Mad Underdog", which bubbles along with acidic intent for the entirety of the A Side. Warmer textures abound on the flip, with the gentle synths and shuffling percussion of "An Afternoons Delight" (dub), before "You Want Me (Never)" brings it home. Another fine release from a producer with a discography that already includes 12"s with Fit, Sound Signature, Track Mode and FXHE.
