Casino Classix (Reissue)
Beach Club - (4:35) 137 BPM
Review: Casino Classix is one of several aliases for legendary minimal man Baby Ford. Here it is also the name of a four-track EP that finds the long time UK underground operative working alongside fellow British techno luminary Mark Broom on a quartet of devastating cuts. 'Ringer' opens up with some dark and nimble baselines darting about beneath a dense layer of percussion and FX. 'Hoppa' is then a more precise and minimalist cut with wonky bass snaking down low beneath the icy hi-hats and jumbled toms. There is a warm dub depth to 'Hot Pot' and 'Beach Club' shuts down with a restless mix of synth daubs and deft percussion over an ice cold groove.

Track 4 - (5:27) 135 BPM Hot
F9 - (4:16) 135 BPM
Review: Mark Broom teams up with Patrik Carrera for this hard-hitting four track release. "KOS" is a tough minimal track. Powered by insistent metallic percussion and visceral kicks, it's primed for peak-time use. The partnership yields a different result on the title track. Focused on a throbbing groove and an insistent, grungy loop, it makes for a powerful roller. Broom and Carrera remain in this general territory for "Track 4". Fuelled by a driving rhythm and merciless metallic percussion, its deft filtered twists and turns are sure to have the desired impact. There's no let-up on "F9" either, where the pair drop a tough, insistent workout.

Hardgroove 4 Life (Ben Sims remix) - (5:08) 138 BPM Hot
You Got Me (original mix) - (4:33) 137 BPM
Review: With Ben Sims' label and related sound firmly back in the spotlight, the main proponents of late 90s techno should not be forgotten. In addition to Mark Williams putting out music again, Mark Broom's Hardgroove 4 Life shines a light on his contribution. The title track - and Sims' version - are the sound at its very finest, comprising rolling hypnotic club grooves and impactful tribal drums. "You Got Me" sees Broom add a moody undercurrent to this sound thanks to the use of a visceral bass stab. But as he shows on the infectious, disco-filtered "Love Train", this is party music, designed to be played and enjoyed at maximum volume.

Rush - (3:58) 137 BPM
Late Night Rave Muncher (Tribal mix) - (3:58) 138 BPM
Review: Mark Broom has been making and playing techno for 30 years, but he retains an unerring ability to always hit the target. The fourth volume of Mutated Battle Breaks is no exception to this rule, and over the course of eight tracks he drops a variety of crafty club tracks. There's the wiry, angular minimalism of "Tube", where Broom sounds inspired by vintage Rob Hood. In contrast, "Whisper" is a chord-heavy roller that is aligned with late 90s loop techno, while changing tact again, the explanatory "909 Workout" is a furious, pared back rhythm track. The common theme throughout is Broom's talent for making highly effective club techno.

Invexis - "Summer Night" - (5:18) 136 BPM
Review: Celebrating the first anniversary of their label, SHDW & Obscure Shape deliver a comprehensive compilation of high-octane techno. Despite most tracks clocking in over the 140 bpm mark, Federation Of Rytm II offers enough nuance and complexity to keep the listener engaged throughout. Lars Huismann's "New Way" resounds to dramatic strings and frenetic break beats, while Mark Broom offers a different perspective. The veteran producer's "Ole Ole" is a dense tribal affair that draws on the loop techno sound for inspiration. The compilation also features other, less predictable influences. Alpharisc's "Flow" draws on dub techno, while contributions from Regent and Invexis seamlessly integrate Detroit depth into peak-time rhythms.

Review: In a short space of time, the RSPX series has become a key part of the Rekids imprint. More broadly, the releases are essential for discerning techno DJs. This compilation shines a light on why RSPX enjoys this status. Mark Broom's "Late Night Rave Muncher" is a diva vocal-led, high energy club banger, while Klint's "Mustang" achieves the same impact by different means. Focused on a rolling groove, filtered vocals weave in and out of the arrangement. That's not to suggest that the series is all about banging techno. Gene Richards Jr's "Take Control" is a superb, Chicago influenced jacker, powered by a primal groove and piledriving claps, while Philippe Petit's "Form & Function" resounds to eerie organs and a shuffling rhythm.

Ben Sims - "Snapshot '99" (dub) - (6:03) 138 BPM
Review: Mark Broom and Ben Sims are among the UK's most experienced techno producers, so it's no surprise that this split release is of the highest standard. Broom digs deep into the hardcore scene for the raw breaks and rave stabs of "W.W.W.W.W.W.W.WORK", and also takes influence from the 90s for "Nothing To Do". Mixing vocal samples with horn stabs over a rolling groove, it sounds like an update of Earth People's NY house classic "Dance". Sims takes a different approach for the steely, visceral techno "Unity", while he goes deeper for "Snapshot '99". Led by insistent percussion and soaring electronic melodies, it is reminiscent of classic Detroit techno.

Ben Sims - "Xotunc" - (5:15) 135 BPM
Review: With 20 years spent releasing, distributing and representing techno and electro's finest producers, it's fair to say that ePM is a true champion of the underground. That commitment comes into sharp focus on EPM20, which brings together music from all of the Eps that the label released over the past year. The listener is really spoilt for choice: Regis delivers the beautifully ghostly techno of "Beyond The Reach Of Time Pt 1", while Robert Hood keeps the mood mysterious on the aptly named "Shadows". While the compilation spotlights prominent producers, it also showcases artists who sometimes fly under the radar - on this occasion, it's Paul Mac with the drum-heavy "Nothing Remains" and Carl Finlow's nocturnal electro on "Optogenetic". The fact that it's dedicated to the sadly departed Tim Baker is also a lovely touch.

Fast Funfzig EP
Wild Style - (3:52) 135 BPM
Review: Mark Broom draws on his own rich back catalogue for the opening tracks on Fast Funfzig: with their rumbling bass tones, swirling synths and hypnotic tribal drums, both "Fingers" and "Slow" draw on the raw techno soul that pervaded his 1996 debut album, Angie Is A Shoplifter. Meanwhile, "Wild Style" sees him embark on a different route; led by a spiky electro rhythm and an ominous bass, the veteran techno producer weaves vocal snippets into the woozy arrangement. On the final track "Facteur" Broom goes deeper, with hollowed out drums providing the backdrop for a tapestry of dreamy melodies that flow and ebb elegantly.

EPM20 - EP1
Ben Sims - "Xotunc" - (5:15) 135 BPM
Review: The ePM agency, label and distributor celebrates 20 years with a series of split EPs focused on techno, electro and house. First up is the techno release, with ePM attracting a stellar line-up to contribute. Robert Hood drops the eerie "Shadows", where menacing organs and steely percussion come together for a mesmerising slice of minimal techno. Ben Sims conjures up dense, tribal drums, interspersed with haunting wind chimes on "Xotnuc", while James Ruskin delivers the tough, steely rhythm of "There Was A Time". Remaining at the tougher end of the spectrum, the always consistent Mark Broom brings this part of ePM's celebrations to a close with the cavernous, pounding groove of "The Three Swords".

Stefan Vincent - "Fever Dream" - (5:43) 138 BPM
Review: Token has traditionally maintained a tightly-knit roster, but on this compilation it welcomes new producers to the fold. Nastia Riegel's "Pray" kick-starts Fuga with dreamy, dubbed-out techno, while Stefan Vincent's "Fever Dream" paints a hypnotic, minimal picture. On "Biomorph", Border One - who is best known for his releases on Wolfskuil - delivers a grimy, bass-heavy groove, while Dold's "My Homework Ate My Dog" and PTTRN's "Contempt/Suggest 6" are the kind of high-paced but intricate techno tracks that the Belgian label has helped to pioneer. Rounding off this fine compilation are the discordant tones of Ribe's "The Cause" and Linkan Ray's bleep-heavy "Introspective Vision".

10 Years Of BEK Audio (Part 1)
JX-216 - "Xingu" (Slam remix) - (6:22) 135 BPM
Review: It's hard to believe that Gary Beck's techno has been around for a decade, and helping him to blow out the candles is a star-studded line up. First up is Chicago legend DJ Rush collaborating with the label owner to deliver the stomping ghetto techno of "Talkers". Sunčica Bari?ić aka Insolate delivers a more European-focused sound on the atmospheric, tone-laden "He Said, She Said". Changing focus again, Slam's version of JX-216's "Xingu" is a visceral peak-time affair that resounds to discordant riffs, while on Mark Broom's "Red Line", an insistent organ and firing percussion, similar to Floorplan's style, is audible. Hopefully it's the first of many birthday celebrations.

Demanding (Don Williams mix 2) - (4:55) 137 BPM
Review: Label owner Mark Broom returns to Beard Man doing what he is best at - tough but expertly put together club techno. The title track is a heavy, tribal affair and is not dissimilar to the loopy material Broom was making at the end of the 90s, albeit laced with insistent bleeps. "D282" is also redolent of that period, with an electronic bass underpinning Broom's rolling rhythm, while "Demanding" sees the Beard Man boss adding some surging chords to the equation. Don Williams from Artless maintains the 90s theme on his first reshape of "Demanding", with hyperactive jazz-synth stabs riding a restless, percussive rhythm. A heavier, more modern approach prevails on his second re-work.

Review: Token has sensibly made all of the tracks from Kr!z debut commercial mix available in an unmixed format. The Belgian label has put out a wide range of music, and its owner represents its diversity well on this selection. With the inclusion of Xhin's twisted, abstract rhythms, the plaintive ambience of Inigo Kennedy's 'Obsidian' and Surgeon's electro take on Grovskopa's "Sex & Violins", the compilation shows the label's reflective side. However, Token is first and foremost a dance floor label and Introspective includes the insane drones of Ctrl's "Sockets", Rodhad's spooky "Spomeniks", the glacial trance of Inigo Kennedy's "Cathedral" and the deranged tonal assault that is Makaton's "Endless Revolt".

Silenced Part 1-4 (Remastered)
Silenced (part 3) - (5:10) 136 BPM
Silenced (part 4) - (3:48) 135 BPM
Review: Broom has making techno for twenty years, but as Silenced shows, he retains the golden touch for dropping killer club tracks. "Silenced 1" features heavy tribal beats and a Hoover bass belching through the speakers, accompanied by a searing acid line. The second instalment is even more visceral; it begins relatively sedately, with deep chords setting an atmospheric tone, but soon enough, ferocious, hissing hats and a churning filter increase the intensity levels. "Part 3" features more of the same bass pressure, this time motoring along to sick acid lines and heavy clicks. Finally, "Part 4" relies on bursts of white noise and a scuffling rhythm to drive home the message.

Things: The Remixes
Things (Paul Mac Rave Bass mix) - (5:09) 136 BPM
Review: First released on Ben Sims Theory Recordings as a 12" in 2009, Mark Broom's "Things" harks back to the raw and rough aesthetics of 90s techno and rave. Brick wall compression sees Broom's original relentlessly crunch, suck and pump until ravey key stabs big enough to fill a Tiesto sized stadium enter the fray. Broom's VIP mix will cause 90s nostalgia seekers and bright eyed youngsters alike to desperately wave their phone in the DJs face with the words track id? Broom super loops his original, occasionally dropping the kick or bass whilst unashamedly sampling Steve Poindexter's '89 club hit "Work That Mutha Fucker". The NYC mix is a more polished production taking "Things" down a minimal and techy route with strings, climbing blips and square pads all in tow. Paul Mac ups Broom's rave antics by plodding a ravey bass line that gets phatter with every stab against crisp hats, tribal percussion and filtered vocals.
