Review: Acclaimed Italian duo Tale Of Us present the third Realm Of Consciousness compilation on Afterlife Recordings. A collection of spellbinding and melodic epics packed full of narratives plus plenty of dancefloor drama awaits with some rather surprising additions too - artist wise. The German hero Recondite serves up the powerful opening track "Savaaq" with its tension and suspense and those soaring melodies, fellow Italians Mind Against team up with Blausch on the hypnotic bliss of "Trust My Eyes" and Ukranian deep techno experts Woo York give us the steely heads down techno of "Discovery". Elsewhere, southern Italians Agents Of Time appear with the adrenalised and entrancing cyclicality of "Superia", frequent Tale Of Us collaborator Vaal takes you deep into the aether on "Weakness Days" and ascendant German Kevin De Vries gets into freefall on the sublime "Phoenix"

Review: Next up on Afterlife is the Italian duo Mathame, who featured on the label's second Realm Of Consciousness compilation. Their tracks have since been played regularly in the sets of label head honchos Tale Of Us and here they present more of their sought-after tracks. This latest offering is no doubt and diverse affair, beginning with the melancholic yet life-affirming "Nothing Around Us" (with Lyke) - another fine execution of dancefloor drama that you've come to expect from the label and features a dark pop element courtesy of Lyke's dramatic vocals. For something more straight-ahead (and with adequate groove dynamics) there's the brooding dub techno slow-burner "22" and the atmospheric mood lighting of "Fade Into You". The latter hypnotizing you with its slinky minimal tech house groove and angelic vocals atop.

Review: After a couple of well-received EPs on labels like ARTS and Afterlife Records, production duo Mathame now make their debut on Fur Coat's Oddity imprint. At The Doors will appeal to those who like their techno deep and layered but that still carries a functional punch. On "Starburst", this combination of crispy percussion and punchy drums provides the basis for tranced out synths, while on "Striker", the pair up the tempo further, and deliver eerie melodies coupled with firing hi hats and cavernous, doubled-up claps. The label has also chosen its remixers wisely: Locked Groove focuses on the ethereal side of Mathame's production for his evocative but pulsating take on "Starburst", while in Cassegrain's hands, "Striker" turns into a hypnotic, rolling groove.

Review: The fifth installment in this series sees German label Connaisseur compile some of the finest deep house in circulation. Thankfully, nothing here has that mushy sameness that has become so pervasive; instead artists like Timelapse, Distortion and Musumeci bring fragile, floaty melodies and chiming chords to their reduced rhythms and dubby grooves. Few Nolder and Lehar up the ante somewhat and the booming bass and cacophony of chilling strings on the latter's "Sarga" is a thing of wonder. Overall though, it's the reflective approach that impresses most; Sam K's "Elido", with its dreamy pattern of chords and vocal that swoons "I will build a castle with a tower high" is worth the price of this compilation alone

Review: A taster for Connaisseur's annual Living Room compilation, this four-tracker is the ideal accompaniment for long, wintry evenings. Sam K's "Elido" starts the release with brittle broken beats, subtle bell-tingling and some sensuous chords. Musumeci's "Clausius" is in a similar vein, albeit slightly more dance floor-focused as hissing percussion and understated drums provide the basis for dramatic chord sweeps. Timelapse's "Next Day" builds on this sound with its combination of pulsing bass and slightly darker melodies, while Mathame's "Hologram Child" rounds out the release and maintains the wintry theme. Powered by a hissing, percussive groove, its bass tones are as dark as a gloomy December afternoon in Iceland.
