Review: Matthew Jonson studied classical piano as a kid and, as well as learning jazz drumming, played drums in a marching band. We only mention this because the influence of all three is still very much in evidence in the infectious house music that the Berlin-based producer makes. The signature melody of 'Spaceport 23' is a jazzy organ riff, which lands it a carefree, frisky air, but of course his grasp of tight, economic beats and beautifully balanced, pleasing-to-the-ear composition also play their parts. 'Spaceport 23-Z' doesn't veer far from the original, but adds a sheen of Detroit-esque synth magic, while those who favour the tech in their tech house will probably want to head for the more synthetic, electrified vibes of 'Spaceport 23-X'.

Review: More than a decade and half after its original release, Mathew Jonson's evergreen Marionette gets re-released in remixed format. Staying true to the original track's sound signature, Stephan Bodzin's version provides the platform for Jonson's frosty trance melodies to play out over a pulsating groove. Shanti Celeste's take is faster and more pared back, with hints of the melody line wrapped into a sleek, metallic rhythm. Josh Wink's remix opts for a different approach; powered by one of the Ovum boss' distinctive acid lines and combined with dense kicks and rasping percussion, it is the most radical departure from Jonson's pioneering original.

Review: The second release on Wagon Repair offshoot Freedom Engine is again courtesy of co-head Mathew Jonson - and here's another round of remixes of his anthemic track "Decompression" from 2004. This round of versions sure have their work cut out for them when remixing such a seminal classic - and here's how they fare out: Cynosure head honcho Mike Shannon serves up a moody and tripped-out tech house perspective, the unusual trio of GMT (Phil Moffa, Guy Gerber and Seth Troxler) stay true to the original, although lace it with some funky tribal rhythms on their mix while dub techno veteran Deadbeat offers up an impressive downbeat deconstruction. Lastly, Colombia's Natalia Escobar - who is hot off a killer release on EXIT Records diffusion imprint Heart Drive goes deeper down the spiral on her dark ambient perspective.

Review: Global Underground's Nubreed series has a huge amount of kudos, having brought respected DJs like Lee Burridge, Steve Lawler and Danny Howells to attention during the early 00s with a series of iconic mixes. Although it was on hold for much of the second decade of this millennium, it has been successfully resurrected and now gives the same platform to Theo Kottis. In keeping with its usual format, this instalment sees the Beautiful Strangers boss explore a range of styles and sound across two mixes. Accordingly, his selection ranges from Gigi Masin's melodic piano composition, "Maja", to the Mountain People's sensuous deep house "La Onda", taking in some underground classics like DJ Assassin's garage/house hybrid "Face in the Crowd" as well as left of centre oddities like The Horn's "Villager". It's a fitting testament to the Nubreed aesthetic.

Review: Canadian techno maestro Mathew Jonson burst onto the scene in a big way in the mid noughties. One of his breakout tunes was in the form of "Decompression" released on Richie Hawtin's esteemed m_nus imprint. Now the 2005 dancefloor bomb gets a series of modern revisions by an all star cast. dBridge is starting with the "Ambient Pressure remix", an even more brooding and atmospheric than the original. The cavernous sonar bleeps, gloomy pads and sharp rhythms of the original remain, except for its signature 'techstep' style sub-bass: which is replaced by a gnarly, glitched out arpeggio. Autonomic and all round UK drum and bass hero dBridge steps up next, with an 'edit' but it's actually the breakneck junglist steeper that the track has been begging to be transformed into for years: it's worth the wait! Elsewhere, fellow British Columbian and Wagon Repairman Konrad Black appears with more great music after a long hiatus: he too returning to his UK influenced roots (don't forget some of his first tunes were on the likes of Ed Rush & Optical's Virus Recordings), albeit taking his cues from the more modern post UK bass sounds on his remix of the timeless classic

Review: Steve Lawler's respected VIVa Music celebrates a decade in the business and what better to celebrate than with a various artists' compilation; the second part in fact. Starting out with head honcho Lawler's funky disco house jam "Show The Way" this one is definitely super fly, if you catch our drift! Polish duo Catz N Dogz stay on the funky and filtered disco house tip with "Ali". What is this, a late nineties tribute? 'Cause we're loving it all the same! Canadian hardware maverick and all round genius Mathew Jonson breaks the mould, providing the typically minimal and hypnotic groove of "1234567" while speaking of minimal; nobody does it quite like the Romanians. Their nation's finest, Livio & Roby, turn in the rolling and downright stomping "9 De Ville".

Review: After his welcome return to the long-player format for Crosstown Rebels in the shape of Her Blurry Pictures, three of Mathew Jonson's creations from the record have been given over to a fine selection of remixers to bring their own interpretations to bear on the plush electronic soul the Canadian champ peddles. Dixon makes for a snug fit on "Level 7", simmering the original down without losing any of the celestial magic of those trademark Jonson synths. Tale Of Us bring a live, skippy feel to "Kissing Your Eyes" with some hands-on drums and warbling keys a plenty. Akufen meanwhile seems to be reaching more towards his Horror Inc project as he muses on "Body In Motion" in a low-slung, jazz-inflected style with a healthy dose of micro shuffle thrown in for good measure.

Review: Canadian producer Jonson unveiles his second solo album. While there are signs that his sound is gradually mutating, for those who were seduced by 'Marionette', there is plenty to get excited about here. "Level 7" offers up those typical, slightly detuned trance melodies that Jonson forged his reputation on, set to a rolling groove and heavy claps, while the title track's psychedelic hooks float through a fluffy ambient backdrop. But "Pictures" also shows that Jonson has moved on; "Touch the Sky" features the kind of jazzy licks that Cobblestone Jazz specialise in - set to a rumbling bass - and more impressively, "Sahara" sees him lay down evocative blues guitar over a pulsing, rhythm track. The approach may have changed, but originality remains his strong point.

Review: Crosstown Rebels head honcho, Damien Lazarus, has taken it upon himself (and his crew) to mark the "cosmically significant" date of December 21 with a 24-hour megaparty in Mexico. For those of us unable to attend in person, this accompanying compilation is the next best thing. Beginning with Pier Bucci's fittingly titled, and deliciously trippy, "Mayans", we get the exotic and trancey "The Prophecy" by Quenum, Matthew Jonson's sinister tech-houser "In Search Of A New Planet With Oxygen", the sublime "Cosmic Dancer" by Francesca Lombardo, the urgent menace of "Greed Insanity" by Fur Coat and the haunting, end-of-the-world vibes of "2012" by Jay Haze.
