Review: With records for Ovum, Pets Recordings and REKIDS of late, Mathias Kaden's quintessential festival sound makes it back to Radio Slave's label following last year's Liberate Drums EP. Delving into synthy, dub techno territory with "Substance" (DJ Pete we hope you're watching), the rest of the record finds itself rooted in classic strands of bigger room Detroit techno and European minimalism, alongside a touch of electro and industrial synth wave in "Control Your Mind" - thinned down and stripped back by Marcel Dettmann's remix. Littered with tougher elements of rave and banging tech house alongside solid bassline progressions in "Conviction" and "Anticipation" too, Mathias Kaden helps us remember what it's going to be like when festivals resume once more. Review: It's been another great year for Catz 'N' Dogz's Pets Recordings imprint. If you missed any of the Polish imprint's many essential releases, fear not, as help is at hand via this top-notch round up of their biggest cuts of 2019. There are naturally plenty of contributions from the label's popular head honchos, with highlights including Andhim's evocative, acid-sporting vocal remix of "Would You Believe", a suspenseful contemporary dream house rework of "There" by Terr and a deliciously retro-futurist house take on "New Love" by Gerd Janson. Elsewhere, top picks include the warehouse-ready throb of Truncate's "Pressure", the pitched-down darkroom chug of "Rattlesnake" by Psychemagik and the drowsy deep house/UK garage fusion of Black Loops' "Keep A Secret".

Review: Berlin institution Watergate Records celebrates its 10 year birthday, with this special 50 track anthology of their favourite records. Over the last decade, the imprint has set a standard for captivating electronic music from across the house and techno spectrum, successfully mirroring the club's booking policy. Now up to over 60 releases including a remix of the Josh Wink classic "Higher State Of Consciousness" by residents Adana Twins, and the 26th installment in their acclaimed mix series by Danish legends Whomadewho - this compilation presents some of its most memorable cuts since its inception in 2008. Highlights come from: label staple Mathias Meyer - the Hanseatic hero presenting several tracks including "Love Letters From Sicily" with Ryan Davis, local legends Tiefschwarz on "Fire It Out" feat. Ruede Hagelstein, resident La Fleur getting remixed by Detroit legend Kenny Larkin on "Nightflow" and rising duo Adriatique's 7am remix of "The Spirit" by the ever impressive Butch (featuring Hohberg) amony many others.

Review: Best known for his work on Vakant, Mathias Kaden now pushes his minimal sound towards the big room with Liberate Drums. Kaden's twitchy, complex programming and deft vocal sampling is audible here, but the groove is more cavernous and the rhythm insistent as he opens up his sound and tailors it to bigger spaces. On "Helicopter", the approach is more functional and utilitarian as he drops a nickel-plated rhythm that provides a backdrop for a frazzled, building riff - like hearing a chopper take off in the middle of the dance floor. For those who like a deeper sound, there's Vril's dense, dubbed out remake and Hiroshi Watanabe's string laden version of the title track

Review: It seems as if 15 years have just flown by since Berlin institution Watergate first opened their doors at the base of the famous Oberbaumbrucke, overlooking the River Spree and where long queues run down the street every weekend to get into one of the best clubs in the world. To celebrate their journey over the last decade and a half, they have put together a special anniversary release of 25 new, exclusive and formerly unreleased tracks. Residents of the superclub all appear, such as Hamburg native Matthias Meyer who teams up with Ryan Davis on the evocative "Hope", famed local duo Tiefschwarz deliver the slow burning and moody tech house of "Control", Sweden's La Fleur (of Power Plant fame) delivers the acidic bump and shuffle of "Femton" and former Stattbad resident and Beste Modus boss Cinthie gets deep on the classic house sound of "Hatschi Hatschi" which has a whole heap of swing to it!

Review: Hot Since 82 brings out the big guns on Knee Deep In Sound: Miami 2017 Sampler and shows all the party animals just how you make main room/peak time tech house that rolls with the best of 'em! Tring's finest Huxley is back and appears here with the sleek and slinky groove of "Harissa" with as much bump and shuffle as you like, Germany's Mathias Kaden appears too with the druggy and adrenalised power of "Desolate" (which is sure to induce a headrush or two this Summer) and the label head honcho himself makes an appearance with the euphoric power of "Renegade" surprisingly the least heavy offering but equally as strongs as the other fine tunes here by Fluendte and Danny Serrano.

Review: Catz 'N Dogz Pets Recordings are really on a roll at the moment and for their next release they have Mathias Kaden, the tech house hero from Jena is back with more high-octane dancefloor energy with "Polyphonic" which rises and rises in suspense with its tightly programmed groove. "NoKick" does exactly what it says on the tin on this beatless, dark acid house jam which will make an effective DJ tool for the more adventurous DJs or be perfect as an opening track.

Review: Six years since his last album, the Studio 10 LP, the Energetic LP sees Mathias Kaden referring "to both his musical roots as well as his current experiences as an internationally travelling DJ". There are now some remixes from the album available, lead track "Soulmakers" gets three new renditions by Swiss legend Deetron whose main remix injects some trademark high-tech soul into the mix while retaining Zoe Xenias affirmative vocals. The "Bassapella remix" is quite a handy DJ tool too. "Tangerine" gets a dark and tunnelling techno makeover by Spain's UNER while "Wisdoms" gets a sinister and rolling retake performed by Leipzig's king of the groove Daniel Stefanik.

Review: While he may have been knocking out largely impressive singles for over a decade, German producer Mathias Kaden is still a little unheralded. This is particularly surprising given the quality of his 2015 album, Energetic. Here, one of the highlights of that set, "Rawtone", gets the remix treatment. The Staygold Remix is rather fine, offering an attractive but undeniably floor-friendly mix of rolling, cymbal-heavy grooves, spooky strings, watery melodies, and impassioned vocal samples. What really makes the remix, though, is the bold and booming bassline, which impressively drives the track forward. Excellent stuff, all told.

Review: Mathias Kaden is a long time alumnus of the Freude Am Tanzen family out of Jena, learning the ropes from the very best; namely the Wignhomy Brothers. His recent long player Energetic originally came out in mid-2015, but now gets the remix treatment from an all-star cast. "Energie" gets a re-rub from Kompakt main man Michael Mayer, who turns it into one of those dark and melodic journey tracks that will fit into the current status quo of similar tracks by the likes of Life & Death and Innervisions. Dresden dusty house hero, the Uncanny Valley affiliated Cuthead, gives "Korokana" a nice urban flavoured rework and the mysterious Redshape gives "Clarity" his trademark rusty and reductionist sound. Let's not forget Nick Curly's contributions; he gives "Get Phunky" a dose of the Mannheim sound. Its driving, percussive tech house groove is relentless and there's a dub version for those of you less keen on Aquarius Heaven's vocals.

Review: After this album's rocket ship intro we're subject to a bevvy of spaced out, trippy beats, liquid basslines and cosmic synths. To a back drop of future music, vocals in "Get Phunky" and "Soulmakers" wax lyrical about the good old days, while tracks like "Rawtone" lets the drums and percussion do all the talking. The smooth tone of Sophie Taylor's vocals offset the screaming synths in "Clarity", while "Wisodom" sees dubbed out piano chords sing a euphoric progression. Get yourself to Berlin and live this music to blood orange sunrise.

Review: It's hard to believe that Sven Vath's Cocoon night has been running for 15 years, and in recognition of this milestone, the Cocoon label has recruited Mathias Kaden and French artist Popof to mix its latest double CD. It's notable that both DJs are from house backgrounds and certainly Popof's mix is reflective of the big room sound, navigating a path through the Re-Up take on Tiefschwarz's "No Message" and the frazzled vocals of Jamie Jones' take on Tom Demac's "Crewcuts and Curls". However, it's Kaden's selection that impresses most, with the German DJ striking a balance between new school house from LB Dub Corp (the flawless "Turner's House") and classics like Derrick Carter's take on Sven Vath's "L'Esperanza".

Review: Once the torchbearer for minimal house, it seems like Mathias Kaden has since softened his sound - something that's audible on Tentakle. "Pitched" is a dense, rolling groove populated by insistent vocal loops, while "Troija" is more nuanced. Over hyperactive drums, Kaden weaves a web of jazzy textures and melodic flourishes, as complex as a maze. "Demence" meanwhile sees him return to more grounded territory, with a niggling acid line and a vocal sample intoning 'the music' set to a rolling groove. Finally, Kaden completes his reinvention with "Propeller"; centred on a relentless filter, its high-paced, slamming groove is more effective than a warehouse full of hiccupping grooves.

Review: Radio 1 DJ Heidi provides a taster for her latest compilation on the German label. Lauhaus & Kabale und Liebe and Mathias Kaden cover the stripped back sound, with the former's "Who Called Kenny?" revolving around a subtle disco filter and a breathy vocal and Kaden's "Jackathon" offering for a blacker timbre and fuller beats. Soul Clap meanwhile, represent the more tripped out side to Heidi's DJing: "Incoming Bitch (Get Low!)" features spacey synths and a warm, nagging bleepy riff. Best of all though is Swiss veteran Deetron's "The Juggler". Based on a jacking rhythm and littered with stuttering vocal snippets, its acid line purrs like a BMW cruising through an Alpine pass.
