Review: Glasgow Underground's Ibiza compilations are traditionally the biggest releases of the year for label head honchos Sam Dexter and Kevin McKay. It's stated they 'have been working their socks off to collect the best selection of cuts' and aimed squarely at White Isle dancefloors this Summer. Starting off with Sante Sansone's remix for the aforementioned McKay. This 'Italian stallion' drops his usual disco style for "What U Want", Barcelona's finest De La Swing impresses us as always with the rolling peak time stomper "No Rules" and also Vanilla Ace & Dharkfunkh's "What We Gonna Do?" (Kevin McKay remix) really brings the funk like no other on this disco-fied joint. It's a whopper here: comprised of a few dozen tracks, it's all damn good value and there's enough surefire grooves on here to keep the kids on your dancefloor groovin and movin' all Summer. And if you can't be bothered with all that: it's conveniently mixed up to perfection across three volumes by McKay himself.
Review: Off the back of one of the year's biggest techno releases 'Waitin' For My Baby's Car", Frenchman Mat Sassari is up next on ever reliable London label CR2 with the moody, dub-inflected tech-house stomper "Put A Record On" - which will work well when played in the main room at warm-up, or back room alike. Following up some killer releases in recent times for the likes of Tronic, Glasgow Underground and Stereo Productions - it is safe to say that Sassari is still one to watch in 2019 and beyond!
Review: Known for releases on labels such as Terminal M, Relief and Glasgow Underground, Matt Sassari, real name Matthieu Piacentile, now delivers this storming EP for CR2. In its original format, "Waitin" is powered by tough drums and a splurging bass, with high-pitched vocal samples intertwined with male chants. It has the overall effect of creating a tough but uniquely soulful track. The release also features an extended version, where the French producer stretches out the arrangement through the use of crafty filters and effective drops that are led by the vocal samples. It's a clever, effective tough house EP.
Review: Filth On Acid is Reinier Zonneveld's new label and he launches it in style with a series of collaborations with his peers. First up is "Cold Conquest", a pulsing, ominous track. Produced with Oliver Koletzki, the dark synth clouds that hover over the acid backing track are the polar opposite of euphoric trance. Moving towards techno, Secret Cinema's "Kickstreem" production with Zonneveld centres on a heavy, prowling bass with echoes of Positive Education. "Got Me', penned with Gabriel Ananda, is a blissed out psychedelic techno groove, while the release ends with "Kapot". Written in association with Matt Sassari, it brings a brash, buzzing end to this impressive debut release.
