Review: There's a hint in the title here, as theBasement Discos serve up a collection of 20 house tracks with the ivories firmly front and centre. But while the old Joanna might be the thread that ties it all together, there's still plenty of variety on offer, from sprightly jazz-house workouts like AFAMoo's 'The Art Of Jazz' to deep house jams like A Naranjo's 'What Lies To Head' and Foot-Loose's 'Weekend'-biting disco-houser 'LA Piano Mood'. It's not all nostalgic homages to the hands-in-the-air anthems of the early 90s, in other words - though naturally there are plenty of those as well, with Piem's '4Real' one clear standout in that department. Of course, if you're not a fan of piano-based house, it's probably not the album for you... otherwise the 'Paradise' part of the title is entirely justified, nuff said!

Review: Ibiza-based house and disco fusionists Melon Bomb have been operating for a few years, though this two-tracker for Tensnake's True Romance imprint is still their debut single (previously, they have contributed cuts to multi-artist EPs). Their style is sweaty and celebratory, with choice loops from '70s disco and funk cuts rising above boisterous beats and booming basslines. This is best exemplified by opener 'Nitty-Gritty', where flash-friend funk guitar licks and razor-sharp disco strings catch the ear while redlined house beats and weighty pump away beneath. 'Moovin' [sic], meanwhile, is a more traditional chunk of French Touch inspired disco-house hedonism, with well-placed filter sweeps and delay style effects being used to add rush-inducing peaks and troughs. If you're searching for some excitable and weighty disco-house workouts, look no further.

Review: Tensnake's True Romance label (est. 2017) gather together the cream of their 2020 output on a five-track EP featuring cuts from Maxi Meraci, Kocleo, Street Player, Factory Sequences and Melon Bomb. The EP as a whole operates in the vague hinterland between disco-house and nu-disco, with Street Players' 'Feel My Love' sitting most firmly in the former camp, Factory Sequences' oddly-titled 'Kvcf' most firmly in the latter and the other three cuts somewhere in the middle, while the jazzy keys and disco strings on Melon Bomb's 'Sweetness' make it the standout to these ears.

Review: Four-man crew Melon Bomb's only previous output has been a smattering of re-edits on compilation style releases, so this debut solo single for Tensnake's True Romance label is a significant step in their blossoming career. It's quietly impressive, too, with the Ibiza-based quartet offering up a pair of tracks that are the audio equivalent of sweltering afternoon sunshine. Lead cut "Sweetness" sees them cloak bumping house beats and thickset bass in wavy, delay-laden electric piano snippets, swirling orchestral samples and well-placed spoken word vocal snippets. Virtual B-side "Didn't I" is a little more Balearic in tone, with pulsing, French Touch-style motifs, tropical sound effects and glistening guitar samples riding another chunky bassline and energetic house beats.

Review: Fingerman's Hot Digits label has now notched up 50 releases. To celebrate this landmark occasion, the man himself has selected 25 of his favourite cuts from the label's rapidly expanding back catalogue. As a showcase for everything that's good about the imprint, it does a bang up job, gleefully jogging between exotic mid-tempo disco and disco-funk (Frank Virgilio, Dr Packer, The funk District), slo-mo disco-acid (Fingerman's tremendous rework of B-Jam's "Sundog"), kaleidoscopic, reworked '80s boogie business (Casual Connection, Melon Bomb, the hard-tweaked filters and heady loop business of Chewy Rubs), tried-and-tested party-starters (Smashed Atoms, Get Down Edits remixing Stephen Richards) and giddy peak-time workouts (Shit Hot Soundsystem, Dave Gerrard, Thomas Maslo, Kiu D). As the old saying goes, this is all killer, no filler.

Review: By now, we should all know what to expect from Editorial's multi-artist edit missives, namely refined party-starting fodder that puts the needs of dancefloors first and foremost. That's certainly what Ed Wizard and Disco Double Dee serve up on the bustling, bass-heavy Afro-funk style madness of the first of five "Dope Licks" on the long running label's latest EP. Hotmood's string-powered disco-funk bubbler "Worldwide" also hits the heights thanks to punchy horns and rolling, beefed-up beats, while Levantine's "Right On" is a rolling and relaxed exercise in filter-sporting disco-house grooves. Elsewhere, Melon Bomb's "Sweet Jam" makes merry with rubbery beats, jazzy bass guitar, dubbed-out vocal snippets and clipped funk guitars, while Alex Zuiev's "Get Lifted" offers the perfect balance between Idjuts style dub disco madness and toe-tipping disco-house chunkiness.

Review: Fingerman's Hot Digits imprint has packed in a lot of releases over the past 12 months, as this expansive roundup of the label's second year in business proves. Featuring 27 tracks and a bonus mix by the South Coast dwelling label boss, there's naturally plenty to admire. Highlights include, but are not limited to, the rolling, head-nodding grooves of Eyeco M's "Keeping It To Myself", the killer proto-house throb of "Tonight" by Bad Barbie vs Evil Smarty, the sexy, string-drenched disco loveliness of P-Sol's "Can't You See", LTJ's trumpet-boasting funk bumper "Fat Thing", and the hard-wired, bass-heavy rework of Julia & Company's "Breakin' Down (Sugar Samba)" by Melon Bomb. It is, though, all pretty darn hot.
