Back Of A Lorry Vol 3
Various
AMPLIFY & Master Error - "Crystal" - (3:44) 175 BPM Hot
Nick The Lot - "Bubbling" - (4:05) 175 BPM
Metal Work - "Just A Beat" - (4:12) 175 BPM
Pengo & Shifu - "Rocking" - (4:23) 175 BPM
StillZ - "By My Side" - (4:34) 175 BPM
Jenks (UK) & SKPY - "Chit Chat" - (3:44) 175 BPM
Review: Lock down your aerials (literally, he'll half inch them otherwise), Nick The Lot is back with his cronies, the conquistadors of contraband, dishing out some serious naughties like 'Crystal', a sci-fi take on jump-up that's artfully restrained, or 'Bubbling'. A rattlesnake banger from NTL himself - it's a springy sledgehammer of energy. There's some proper backdoor action going down elsewhere, too... Metal Work's on some next level space invader riffage, Pengo & Shifu get groovy with a nicely funky/ euphoric build-up, StillZ brings some super chubby 4x4 pumpage (and a really cool switch) and Jenks and SKPY bring some 23rd century sleaze into the mix. Next level business, the real crime here would be to sleep on these.

Acceptance - (4:27) 174 BPM

I'll Be Here - (4:04) 174 BPM Hot
Review: Metal Work and Just Mack link up once again for another trip into the subtle and soulful corners of their palette. 'New Dawn' is a fitting opening gambit. Graceful pianos, dreamy vocals and surging sense of soul set the tone for the whole EP more graceful grooves breeze our way. 'Acceptance' is a solemn nodder, 'Free Falling' takes us towards Pennygiles or Calibre territory before 'I'll Be Here' closes the EP with more of a funkier, jazzy twist. Sublime.

I'm Done - (4:06) 175 BPM
Lost Soul - (4:02) 175 BPM
Review: Becoming more and more versatile and skillish with every release, Gradient co-bossman and hugely respected D&B blacksmith Metal Work returns to our playlists once again with more wide-armed, forward-thinking sounds. As with his previous releases on The District, 'Take Your Time' flexes his more soulful side as he whips up four emotional, heartfelt grooves for the deeper leaning heads. Highlights include the dreamy vocal treatments and gentle pianos on 'I'm Done' and the heavier, futuristic finale piece 'Lost Soul'. Superb.

Extra - (4:48) 174 BPM Hot
Need To Know - (4:05) 174 BPM
Running Out Of Time - (4:35) 174 BPM
Review: There's no stopping Metal Work and Just Mack right now as the pair link up once again for four more deep, smouldering burn-ups. Full spectrum flavours as always; 'Baby (In Love)' is all about that classic soulful vibe that The North Quarter has championed really well in recent years. Elsewhere 'Extra' takes us into more cosmic Soul:r areas before 'Need To Know' shimmers in with all the glossy vibes we need for spring. Finally 'Running Out Of Time' ends on an emotional, introspective piano flex. What a session. Trust us; you most definitely 'Need To Know' about this EP!

Review: Whether you need some custom steel stairs made for your new home or workplace, or your horse needs shoeing or you require some truly face-melting slappers for your drum & bass sets, Metal Work is what you need. One of the busiest and prolific gents in action right now, here he bows out of 2022 with this powerful collection on Pick The Lock. Loaded with dangerous levels of bass weight and intriguing fusions, highlights include those shoe-gazing guitars and atonal bass scrapes on the title track, the oddball funk and twisted dynamics of both 'Raw Flava' and 'I Need You' and the humorously-titled / craftily-delivered 4x4 finale 'Tech No Sh!t'. Putting in the work in, each and every, huge shouts to Tom Metal Work on this one!

Review: Every blacksmith needs a fire so it's no surprise that Metal Work has released 'Firestarter'. Obviously nodding at the iconic energy and ideology of the late great Keith Flint, the track sets the tone and pace for this massive EP. Six tracks heavy, each cut his in its own unique way and showcases a different side to the Gradient co-boss. 'Get Ready' is laced with all kinds of futuristic glitches, 'Bass Kick' is a classic mid-2000s Playaz or Radius style tear-up, 'Smash' is a pounding piece of Belgium inspired tearage, 'Hold It Down' is pure insanity while 'What It's Like' closes the EP with a powerful synth-twisting throw down. Fire in the hole!

Review: Hey m8 come and ingrati8 yourself with these power pl8s. R8 have kindly gener8ted a series of brand new remixes and we'd be wise to decor8 our collections with them. Filthy Habits set a stern mand8 with their heavyweight remix of Metal Work's 'Thinking' before Nu Elementz go on to remonstr8 their levels with the swaggering take on 'Bloodshed'. Deeper again Metal Work continues to gravit8 towards the grottiest end of the spectrum with the obliter8ing take on Amplify's 'Complete' before Master Error steps up to demonstr8 his skills on 'No More Games'. Consumm8 badboys.

Review: Time to acitv8 your senses once again m8 as High R8 inund8 us with more of their l8 night missions from the last 10 years. Flexing right back to the earliest of releases (which all still stand tall and hit hard to this day) it's another high powered mand8. Metal Work's turbo-charged wobbler 'Sausage Roller' will discombobul8 you, Meddler's 'Temple Of Z' will defibrill8 you, Dub Motion's 'Hold You' will expector8 all over you with its oozing, slimey bassline and Guv's 'Hard' will illumin8 you. And that's only a wee glimpse at what's on offer. We appreci8 this!

Took For Granted EP
Took For Granted - (4:27) 174 BPM

Just Mack - "In The Fields" - (4:29) 174 BPM
Too Many Chances - (5:13) 174 BPM Hot
Review: Usually known for his uncompromising jump up textures and dastardly dark dynamics on the dancefloor side, Metal Work continues to showcase his emotional line of beats on brand new label The District. Linking up with Just Mack once again, 'Took For Granted' is another chance to experience the softer side of Metal Work; lilting keys, dreamy vocals and a cosmic sheen lead the way as we're treated to a lavish liquid lunch. 'Every Night' takes us far away soulful places, 'In The Fields' is reminiscent of Artificial Intelligence at their dreamiest while 'Too Many Chances' closes the EP with an epic shot of psychedelic euphoria. Don't take this for granted.

Review: Having a mare mate? Don't worry, Metal Work is too. A real grotty, freaky, gnarly nightmare if the title track of this EP is anything to go by. Elsewhere he's having computer issues with the glitchy fury of '404' (with Master Error), he's fixing leaky pipes on the barking mad 'Drip', having issues with his heating on the staccato shots of 'Freeze' and being chased by unclassifiable beasts on the grizzly 'Monsta'. And if that's not quite enough, his watch is broken on the trippy, warped and wonderfully weird 'Time Won't Slow Down'. Chin up MW, brighter days ahead!

Review: Best known for blacksmithing up your ears with pure grit, Tom Metal Work dusts off his soulful side and links up with Just Mack for this delicious summer number. Deep and dreamy vibes all the way, 'Sunshine' is the perfect afternoon / evening settler for easing people into the vibe. Deeper into the EP we hit the Workforce-esque smoothness of 'Deep As Shadows' while Just Mack's gentle tones appear on the stunning 'Attraction'. Last but not least 'Love Me Now' brings everything to an emphatic piano tickling climax. Metal Work needs to show off his emotional side more often!

Highlights come in every shape and size as we burn and turn through the 26 track collection; AKOV goes in with some brooding severance on 'The Other Side', Redpill takes energy levels higher than ever before on the epic 'The Edge' while Metal Work makes his debut on Eatbrain with the swaggering grizzle fest 'I Told You'. Elsewhere we have Screamarts delivering serious goods on the creeped out 'Deviant', Zombie Cats bring some ruthless funk on 'Aus' and Mythic Image goes full-on intensity with 'Dymaxion'. A powerful collection right here!

Review: Everyone's favourite banger blacksmith, Yung Metal Work gets his tools out on High R8 Digital and gives us all our a hooves a shoeing. The tension and heat is evident from the off as 'Wriggle' gets freaky with a rhythmic vocal jitter and some savage high-freq bass saws. It's backed by plenty more slappage: 'Searching' takes a euphoric vocal and flips it into a futuristic fire-up, 'Deep Down' takes us down a super twisted bassline rabbit hole while 'Take It Slow' flips between emotional and twisted at a flip of a switch. Finally 'Soul Seeker' finishes up the EP with a series of laser-blazing textures and an unrelenting energy. Grizzly!

Review: From the holy to the moly with all levels of WTF and crikey along the way; Gradient have just levelled up with this turbo-charged VA that celebrates how exciting the new generation of drum & bass is right now. So many talents, not enough time or space to list; just press play, dig deep and you'll find untold bangers for days. From Harley D to Warhead to Amplify via Nick The Lot, Jenks, Scurrow, Flint, Fanatics and the bossman Metal Work, this is a huge collection that's right on the cutting edge of the club D&B sound. Fusing elements of jump-up, tech and good old fashioned dancefloor bangers, these are the sturdiest foundations from which future careers will be built on.

Review: Gr8 news m8, High R8 are celebr8ing 10 years in the game and it's not too l8 to join the party. Agit8ing the game with abrasive, high grade grottiness and jump-up dark energy with every release, this second volume of bangers-through-the-years kicks off with a VIP of the launch tune - Guv's now modern day classic 'Blood'. The vibes get danker and danker as we continue to investig8... The gutterfunk of Dub Berzerka & Filthy Habits 'Born Bad' from 2016, Metal Work's skank-blasted 2019 cut 'Don't Know Why', Telekom's hairy 2014 tree-swinging heave-ho 'Funky Monkey' and Nu Elementz and Dub Motion's 'Tell You' (also from 2014) are just some of bangers that activ8 our senses and make us ready to instig8 a packed dancefloor. Ready for the next 10 years? It's a d8.

Review: Your favourite badman blacksmith is back! It's the currently unstoppable Metal Work who, fresh from releasing his own album on Gradian in December and a massive EP on High R8 last month, returns with yet more heavyweight gold. 'Crawling' is a full-spectrum affair with a powerful bass riff and all kinds of cosmic feels on the breakdown, 'Play God' flips between total choral dreaminess and 180% proof darkness while 'Attack' sees him teaming up with friends Master Error and Amplify for a vicious harmonic tear-up. Last but definitely not least, we hit 'Oh Why'. Bringing the EP together on a deep space flex, the intro and synths will leave you hanging in zero-G while the bassline brings you plummeting back to reality in the best possible way.

And what a funky, cantankerous working piece of metal he is, too... 'Basement' will lock you up and feed you scraps for months with its vicious sense of tension and the rest of the EP is just as heavyweight. Highlights include the pure grot of 'Go' (think early 2010s style, but with contemporary production muscle), the pure funk and strange wooziness of 'Don't Care' and the cool, twisted harmonics of 'Gunna Get Them'. Gotta get this.

Gradient bossman Metal Work continues to showcase his D&B dexterity with his debut album. 14 tracks in total, each one revealing more shades to his uncompromising, and forward-thinking palette, highlights include the paranoid sci-fi punkisms of 'Don't Wanna', the barbed soul and deep space bubbles of 'Face My Fears', the warped and warm 'Moonlight' and the aggy, twisted shock-out 'Punched' with fellow Gradient groover Amplify. But don't stop there; these highlights aren't even the tip of this heavy metal iceberg, this is a seriously accomplished debut album from one of the new generations hardest working and talented souls. Shower in power!

Review: His name sounds like Judas Priest Fan Of The Year 1982, or Blacksmith Of The Year 1882, but Metal Work's music sounds like it's from 2082 and it's going to slice you, your family and, most importantly, your dancefloor to pieces. Forges at the ready, 'Dragon Fire' panel beats us from the off with a big early 2000s D-Minds style bass riff. It's back by equally heavy weapons including the big brass backdrop and aggy harmonics of 'Faded', the dreamy breakdown and sheet metal bassline slaps of 'Miracle' and the breath-taking, wonky basslined gully hurricane that is 'The Sky'. Fire in the hole!

He presents the label's first various artists compilation here titled 'Back Of A Lorry Vol. 1' featuring six rising young producers within scene, such as Devonshire luminary Amplify with the classic techstep vibe of "Sleep", Cardiff-based DisKrete delivers a minimal stepper in the vein of DJ Krust on "Time's Up", while Germany's Cramz nails that classic Ram Recordings sound on the tough roller "Revolver" and Manchester's Kormz (WA3 Collective) hammers the message home in style with the sci-fi beats of "Mind Trap".

Review: As if firing out badness galore through their 'Connected' series wasn't quite enough action for a label that's barely been around 6 months, Amplify and Metal Work's Gradient levels up again with the massive 'Foundations' VA that's stacked to the top shelf with some of drum & bass music's finest upstarts and high risers. 15 tracks deep, highlights come in all shapes and sizes including the sensual textures and tones of D-Fuser's 'Sticky Situations', the madcap jazzy springs and splutters of Fanatics' 'Everyday', KL's revved up staccato sizzler 'Plain To See', Metal Work's rather glacial 'Cold As Ice' and Parallel's early D-Minds style 'Capital Crimes'. Killer through and through, 'Foundations' as strong as this are built to last.

Review: Hedex is on a mission again! He's rousing up the troops for the second 'Collected' collection on his ByTheProducer brand and once again it's a monster rollcall of some of the scene's most exciting new-gen talent. Over 18 tracks we're treated to the likes Disrupta, Refracta, DJ Premium, Metal Work, Filthy Habits, Toxinate and so many more super skilled producers, highlights include the emotional space age jitters and whirls of Easty's 'Tapped', Scudd's emotional rumbler 'Complete', Posk's jazzy face-slapper 'Biting' and Metal Work's ruffneck 'Inner Peace'. And that's just the tip of the 'Collected' iceberg. Grab this now and grab yourself a piece of history.

Review: High R8 Digital are a regular here on Juno and for good reason, their tendency for steadily releasing rough but powerful, whole-hearted music is strong and their small size doesn't prevent the release of top-quality stuff. This EP from Metal Work is in that exact tradition, as across five tracks he tears you limb from limb with dancefloor focused jump-up precision. 'Stronger' is the strongest on the release, with an almost neuro feel to its cracking percussion and a torn, broken back end that rips across the range with style. There is more excellent work on the fat snare of 'Join Us', and this one is not to be missed.

Review: Feeling fine for Northern Line! Rantik and JAK's fledgling young label comes correct with their first full paid release. It's a VA and it's a beauty. Continuing the exceeding weight and exciting breadth of the sound they've built up through free downloads, these nine tracks rep the Newcastle label's parameters with deadly intent and features some very exciting new-gen names. Highlights include Hexa's pranged-out swinger 'Shanghai Knights', the volcanic bombastic bounces and blazes of Stompz' 'Funk Accelerator' and the Metal Work's gritty punisher 'Changes'. And that's just the tip of this northern iceberg. Firing.

Metal Work - "Mega Punch" - (4:05) 175 BPM Hot
Review: Gradient continue their upward curve with the latest link-up in their 'Connected' series as two more currently unstoppable new gen artists collide for a two-track tear-up. Klay kicks off the release with the grotty, spiked-out 'Yami'. Nodding heavily at that early Konichi sound, all robotic gritty funkular business, it bites into any mix you drop it with. Metal Work's 'Mega Punch' is similarly spirited in its aggy energy but with added wobbles in the bass and twisted robo vox on the fills. It's a knock-out!

Review: You think being on lockdown is hard? Trying a sentence in the 'Gulag' and then say something. Hard times call for hard music as the currently unstoppable Metal Work continues his 'Gulag' EP with six uncompromising grunters. 'Gulag Survivor' takes off where part one left us; working to the bone while being pummelled by rifle-like bass. Other punishments include the high voltage sizzles and grizzles of 'High Tech', the pure abrasion and trippy, warped bass grit of 'War' and the out-and-out drama of his remix of last year's nasty 'Losing Myself'. Sentence complete, now lockdown feels like Disney Land. R8ing this one m8.

Review: High R8 are keeping up their streak of releases with this grating, gully monster from Metal Work, who has had a very prolific couple of years on a whole host of different labels. The title track to this release says it all really, with a fiery injection of energy at all levels alongside an all-encompassing sense of purpose and drive that lends the track a superb quality. 'Losing Myself' steps things up a notch, with a rambunctious foghorn that bends, twists and distorts throughout the whole tune, carrying the listener with them as it goes. Overall this release is industrial and not to be messed with - top work.

Multiverse - (4:01) 175 BPM Hot
Review: Featuring a flashy album cover laden with a 90s style face close-up (which we love), Metal Work is here to recharge your desire to get a bit nuts to some top-quality jump-up D&B. The wavering synth-line on the title track opens us up and leads into some filthy, filthy Macky Gee-esque bass synths that rumble all the way down. 'Multiverse' creeps in on the intro with some well-made synth lines, the riotous kick drum bringing us back to those gnarly basses and the whole tune has a wonderful, creeping sort of vibe. Dark and murky stuff.

Review: Good4Nothing are turning 10 years old and are celebrating that fact in the only real way you should celebrate a label anniversary: with a big old compilation album. They've gone all-in for this one and raked up 15 tunes artists like Dutta, Ironlung, Slipz and Complex. Dutta' contribution is typically naughty, with a pulsating back end that sits just beneath a snappy drum line that includes a lovely, wooden snare that has just the right amount of bite. Part 1 of this series is a truly hedonistic banger of a compilation which is well worth checking out, we cannot wait to hear what the label has in store for us in Part 2.

Review: High R8 isn't a label we're intimately familiar with but, based on this fiery release from Metal Work, is an imprint that puts out hard-hitting music that's packed full of attitude. There's certainly no sugar in this release and 'No Sugar' confirms that, with a deliciously solid percussive line underneath a glitched-out flurry of basses and synths, all of which are packed with the type of energy we've come to expect from the jump-up scene. All of the others are in a similar vein, making this release solid all round.

Review: Hyrdrated Audio have clearly decided that they're going to grab 2019 by the horns and do everything they can to make this year the year that their imprint makes it. You can tell the extent of their determination from the precision with which they've curated this various artists compilation and the mix of vibes and quality is top notch. The opening tune from Metal Work says it all, a rolling grater of chopped-up bass synths that'll pace out its competitors. A favourite of ours is Skeng by Raptcha, another lovely rolling number that flips your expectations on its head with a flow of creativity - big tune. Make sure to check out the full comp - wicked stuff.

Review: Get the saws out... Metal Work is back! This time he's flexing on Subway Soundz, packing two gritty jump-up steppers; "Life Forms" is all about the bitter, toxic, grain riff that scales up on every entrance while "That Feeling" gets a little funkier with a slightly off-grid bassline that suddenly flips up the frequency spectrum when you least expect it. Get to work.

Review: Flipping the switch and easing into the new year with subversive style, heavyweight dancefloor imprint Bass Legion let loose with a collection of deeper, liquid sounds you might not expect from their usually uncompromising acts. Serious moments of delicate and imaginative music abound as Tsuki plays a restrained piano number, Metal Work goes on a Total Science style space funk step odyssey and Dutta delivers a wondrous filtered hazy roller that wouldn't have gone amiss on Hospital 15 years ago. Rounding up the deep concept in style Vision takes us to the stars on a Maduk style trip while Simskai gets freak on a slippery synth disco trip. A well-executed concept; more labels should take a leaf out of Bass Legion's book and get their artists exploring other styles.

Review: Heist: one of drum & bass's darkest forces behind so many of talent's careers, so many big producer's mixing desks and so many of our go-to bangers... Both as a label owner and producer. Here he plays the role of both as he leads an expertly-curated collection of innovative styles with a breezy vocal soul roller "Never Enough". Bringing up the rear Ceph gets sci-fi and spacious on "Solitude", Simula gets a cosmic funk on with the Lynx-esque "Truth Serum", Skore's fuses classic hardcore dynamics with Detroitian synth tones on "Roger", Metal Work charm us with delicately layered liquid keys on "Simple" and Zere & Gabriel Habit sign off with the darkest cut of the collection. Fresh and full of exciting new talent, Heist is killing it this year.

Review: Metal Works - the man formerly known as The Fade - teams up with M92 once again for a show-stopping moment "Open Both Eyes". Sitting somewhere between Lamb and Lenzman, it's an incredibly well executed piece of soulful drum & bass. "You Are Mine" sees MW go solo for a more synth focused session where a simple riff, catchy vocal sample and harder, full-bodied beats drive the message home. A serious curveball from Spectre, this one runs deep.

Review: The act previously known as The Fade return with two rather fetching rollers for your collection: ?Feel This? is a jazz-licked stepper that wriggles and slaps with a sharp, jaunty jam that?s very reminiscent of Random Movement?s work. ?Never Go There?, meanwhile, hums with those warm, immersive subs that Logistics and Sub Focus really made their own around six/seven years ago. Got a time machine? Fast forward 10 years and play these? We reckon they?ll still sound just as warm and weighty.
