Review: Kompakt's 23rd Total compilation fearlessly explores the dance music realm once again with a curated lineup that ranges from deep minimalism to radiant disco-infused tracks and more. 23 kicks off with Kollmorgen's moody and atypical Kompakt cut "Muddy" leading into the subtle chimes of Argia's "No Concept". Some bite size Italo pop comes via Michael Mayer's "Talmi" alongside a heavier Cologne-infused "Duration" made with legendary cohort Barnt, while there's some new wave to be found from Stephan Barnem & Futuristant alongside some genre-defying "Cinematic Dance" by Jorg Burger. Summer hits also come from Rex The Dog, and John Tejada who drops in with "Duration", before the compilation concludes with Reinhard Voigt's classic vocal and tone combi: "Endlich XXL"

Review: Prepare for an exhilarating techno experience with Speicher 125, the highly anticipated split EP featuring the exceptional talents of German producers and DJs Barnt and Michael Mayer. This release is a part of the renowned Speicher series, which stands as one of Kompakt's impressive V/A serials. Designed to ignite the peaktime dancefloor, the EP showcases two mesmerizing tracks: 'Teller' and 'Duration'. Both compositions exude a minimal and intense energy, reminiscent of the captivating style found in later DJ Koze tracks and evoking elements of film soundtrack techno. In "Teller," Barnt and Mayer unleash a synth-driven storm that builds tension and thrill. As percussion layers up against an incessant buzz, the track takes an immersive turn, immersing listeners in waves of dense texturology. 'Duration' surprises listeners with an enchanting blend of organic bells and captivating beats, delivering an irresistible sonic experience.

Review: Well, it's that time of year again when one of electronic music's finest labels presents another sonic soiree. Cologne powerhouse Kompakt serves up the 21st installment in their esteemed Total series featuring some the year's greatest hits and near misses, from their own roster and external artists but all curated in its distinct aesthetic throughout. Label staples such as Jurgen Paape appear with the balmy summer allure of "La Guitarra Romantica", label co-head Michael Mayer with the entrancing dancefloor drama of "Happy" and of course Voigt & Voigt on the paranoid afterhours minimal house of "Nicht Mein Job". Elsewhere, there's the ever reliable John Tejada making the mandatory appearance with the chilled contemplative beats of "Spectral Progressions", the always impressive Jonathan Kaspar being the label's best sound ambassador on the the deep techno epic "Von Draussen", the return of Gui Borrato on the glassy-eyed and bittersweet pop-inflections of "Wake Up" and newcomer Nicky Elisabeth with "Celeste" - which gets a slinky and hypnotic rework by the legend Roman Fluegel.

Review: Since the Kompakt legend's heyday, Michael Mayer's music has been few and far between, however when something does land it's to be celebrated. The interim between Brainwave Technology and his last single, Higher, for Kompakt comes through what Mayer has described as a deep dive into the thorny terrain of artificial intelligence, transhumanism and posthumanism. Inspired by reading German philosopher Richard David Precht and 'watching hours of YouTube material by self-proclaimed prophets', Meyer keeps on a deep yet light hearted and progressive tip in tracks like "Alpha", to the subtle "Device For The Young At Heart". Mayer throws in something rougher and perhaps slightly Aphex-inspired via "Gamma", with "Brainwave Technology" itself the obvious hit here with its Dirtybird-esque bassline and electro rave elements. Michael Mayer meets Lex Fridman.

Review: Most labels and collectives are challenged to last a decade in electronic music's fleeting landscape, but so far Kompakt has endured for twice this lifespan. This is largely due to the fact that the Cologne operation boasts a tightly-knit group of artists who continue to release on its many labels. For the twentieth edition of the annual Total compilation series, many of those producers come correct; Robag Wruhme and founder Michael Mayer both deliver ponderous deep techno tracks, while Jurgen Paape goes even farther, veering into guitar-spangled melancholia on "Vox Acris". This introspective mood seeps through to more overt dance floor tracks, with Sascha Funke's eerie "Atze" and Voigt & Voigt's "Schopper Da Leu" delivering understated but impactful results.

Review: As one of the co-heads for Cologne based Kompakt, city native Michael Mayer has helped to curate their distinct sound aesthetic for over two decades and is equally revered behind the decks for his epic and masterful sonic narratives. Mayer returns to his beloved imprint for a new offering entitled "Higher" which is his first original contribution to the label in eight years. This is a playful and uplifting tune with an old school aesthetic. Taking its cues from his humble beginnings in Italo disco and early 90's US deep house, it is a future classic if we do say so ourselves. This is followed by the moody "Doot Doot" led by its hypnotic jacked vocal, and lastly the brooding dancefloor drama of "Take A Stand For Love" with its roaring Reese bassline tearing through the speakers.

Review: Kompakt's revered sub-label celebrates its 100th release with contributions from its founders and the artists who helped to launch it over 15 years ago. Label owner Michael Mayer kick-starts proceedings with the pulsating, tranced out "Lout", which eventually breaks down to tie-dyed melodies. On "Beatmesse 1 & 2", label stalwart Jorg Burger delivers a somewhat more reflective, hypnotic techno groove than is Speicher's usual fare, while Jurgen Paape rekindles the party flames thanks to the mesmerising "Whisper Echo" and the dreamy trance of "Rodeo". Blowing out the candles on this exemplary release are the Voigts, with their mid-tempo, cinematic groover, "Leise".

Review: Michael Mayer's deeply majestic and romantic "For You" featuring Hot Chip's Joe Goddard on vocals was a hit in late 2016 and now gets a series of brilliant remixes by the one and only DJ Koze. The man from Hamburg delivers a bunch of equally dreamy and candlelit renditions; in particular the "Mbira Mix" which accentuates those ethereal and mesmerising bell tones from the original into something even more hypnotising and special. The "Club Mix" however is definitely a great upbeat rendition were the harbour city hero works his magic as always; creating an epic moment of life affirming bliss for late night dancefloors.

Review: Two heroes of the new breed kick off a new mix series for Jamie Jones' esteemed Hot Creations imprint. Jones began Paradise at DC10 (Ibiza) five years ago and it's gone on to be a huge success, inviting the biggest names in the business to come play alongside his crew of residents. The first mix is courtesy of Toronto's Nathan Barato, a frequent collaborator with local heroes such as Carlo Lio and The Junkies and whose career has been on the rise with releases on Cajual, Saved, Circus and Defected. Highlights include the Derrick Carter classic "Where Ya At?" (Mix Originale), Makam's brooding "Loleatta" and Jared Wilson's rusty acid odyssey "Girl, I'm Waitin". UK talent Patrick Topping this year completed his third summer as resident at DC10 in Ibiza for Paradise. Here Topping showcases the sound and style of his sets with high energy from the word go. His mix features several of his own productions guaranteed for maximum dancefloor impact, as well as Metaboman's lo-slung and exotic "Next Please" through to Dave Clarke's massive remix of Jark Prongo's "Movin Thru Your System".

Review: Kompakt's Michael Mayer and Magazine's Barnt (a couple of Cologne's finest) team up for some darkly sophisticated and contemplative house sounds on "Und Da Stehen Fremde Menschen", a woozy and sombre sonic excursion with layers of dark strings that hypnotise you into submission atop of epic, near tribal style drum beats. Amsterdam's Patrice Baumel delivers a very futuristic remix; this is how you make a dark journey track right here! While in a surprise twist, Bristol bass-techno stalwart Kowton gets on board to deliver a pretty an impressive rendition that shows more restraint than what we're used to by him; quite a highlight actually.

Review: Kompakt's Total compilation series - an annual round up of gems from the imprint's tightly packed release schedule - must be one of the longest-running in dance music. Amazingly, this latest installment is the 14th volume in the series. For those who enjoy Kompakt's generally positive approach to electronic music - think tactile techno, ambient pop and skewed, synth-laden house from the likes of Michael Mayer, Thomas Fehlmann, Partial Arts and Gui Boratto - there's much to admire, including a slew of previously unreleased cuts. These include Superpitcher's "Delta", a sublime chunk of hypnotic e-tronica that's almost too melodic for its own good. Arguably even better is Weval's live recording of "Something", which is near perfect in its wide-eyed pop simplicity.

Review: By now, we should all know what to expect from both the Balance series and Danny Howells, namely slick, atmospheric, spine-tingling electronic music of both an uptempo and downbeat bent. This bumper digital version of his latest double CD mix features some exceptionally good tracks, from the exotic, psychedelic techno of Will Saul and October's rework of Michael Mayer's "Mantasy" and the evocative Balearic deep house of Joakim's "Another Light", to the dreamy fluidity of Matthias Voigt's remix of Ian Pooley's "I Got You", and the crystalline electronics and wide-eyed beauty of Maricopa's ambient delight "Neon Shoals". It is, then, a sizzling hot collection of evocative electronic music for dancers and dreamers. Don't sleep.

Mantasy (Will Saul & October mix) - (7:04) 118 BPM
Review: Drawing on his recent Mantasy album for a second round of remixes, Michael Mayer gets the revisionist treatment from an eclectic spread of artists. Agoria gets positively effervescent on "Good Times", floating on trippy, sun kissed washes of melody while heavily processing the vocal into a celebration of extreme pitching. Robag Paavo and Velta get far deeper on their version of "Baumhaus", working around a minimal rhythmic construction made up of intricate percussion that gently feeds emotive keys and strings into the mix. Will Saul and October are in an equally slow-burning mood as they let "Mantasy" simmer under a mesmerising combination of searching melody and analogue drum rumble.

Review: Presenting yet another year of the more reflective end of the Kompakt sound world, the Pop Ambient series is reprised to invite both label favourites and new additions to offer a soothing ambience to tickle at your synapses. Wolfgang Voigt is, as ever, unmatchable in his regality both remixing Michael Mayer and offering his own, orchestra-fuelled study in haunting, shapeless dynamics. Mikkel Metal allows the most subtle of pulses in to anchor his own droning arrangement, while the likes of Triola offer up a lighter tone marked out by more plaintive synthesiser tones. If you need a quality-assured selection of refined meditation music, this is the compilation for you.

Review: The follow up to 2004's Touch sees Kompakt boss Michael Mayer embrace a wide range of styles without losing his melodic touch. Yet despite this, Mayer's fondness for irresistible hooks and melodies is audible on the ambient opener "Sully", and "Lamusetwa", whose chopped up break beats combine sensuous strings and spy theme synths. Elsewhere though, Mayer tries his hand at new wave - on the storming rhythms of "Rudi was a Punk" - and visceral club techno - "Neue Furche". However, his pop techno past can't escape him as the infectious "Good Times", which features the vocal "let's just have a good time", demonstrates.

Review: As its predecessors had done, this latest instalment in Kompakt's annual compilation series gives a good snapshot of where the label's at in the summer of 2011. There's the usual mixture of melodic ambient pop, techno club hits, shuffling deep house and expansive electronica, with familiar favourites (Michael Mayer's brilliant remix of WhoMadeWho, GusGus's "Over", Matias' Aguayo's lo-fi dance-rock groover "I Don't Smoke") being joined by a smattering of unreleased cuts. Highlights come thick and fast, with Superpitcher's previously unheard "White Lightning", Jargen Paape's dream-like "Pray" and Mohn's slo-mo wonk-fest "Tiefnatal" most impressing. If you're after a high quality collection of emotion-rich, cutting-edge electronic music, look no further.

Review: Electronic music is often defined as being apolitical and entirely self-serving, but in this time of existential crisis for Japan, it shows that dance producers not only have a conscience, but care deeply about the country. There have been a number of initiatives already within electronic music to raise funds for Japanese earthquake/tsunami victims, and the act of helping is the overarching concern here. However, hopefully when you do decide to purchase this Kompakt compilation, you will get the added bonus of ghostly ambience from Marsen Jules and Ezekiel Honig, playful, offbeat house from Efdemin, eerie minimal house from SCSI-9 and Nick Hoppner, and Anontelli's playful electronic pulses - as well as feeling good about supporting a beleaguered nation.
