Review: Munich's Jazz & Milk have rustled up this mini label comp to mark their current ten-year anniversary. We get four cool cuts from as many producers: "Dreams" by Sam IRL kicks things off with deep organic grooves and bleeps and "Technotrap" by Mieux sees a raw, frenzied beat underscore some seriously trippy arpeggiation. Elsewhere Dusty's "Heavy Lights" is more of a loopy 4/4 space disco jam and finally things end on a brassy New Orleans party tip with Todd Simon and the Angel City All Star Brass Band's cheery rendition of "Mas Que Nada".
Review: The most recent single from Vienna-based basshead Mieux gets the remix treatment, with an interesting array of artists offering their own interpretations of tracks from the Neufant EP. We Sink step up first, offering a touchy-feely UK funky take on "Greek" with distinct footwork influences. Sekuoia impresses with his version of "Pearl", which builds from an atmospheric, hip-hop tempo roller into an eyes-wide-shut assault of cut-up samples, woozy chords and delicate melodies. There's a solid edit of "Guns" from HADE in the original two-step style, before Kelpe delivers his own unique take on "Risiko". Easily the EP highlight, the DC Recordings-affiliated producer brilliantly combines cymbal-heavy percussion, atmospheric chords, ice-white melodies and crystal electronics.
Review: Effortlessly straddling the lines between bright, cheerful electro-indiepop and dark grime-influenced trap, Mieux aren't so much joining a scene as helping it to evolve. Bass music has been looming and lunging through different phases of creation for some time now and each track on this EP offers some insight into where it's heading next. "Greek" is a light-hearted blast of colourful calypso-flavoured future garage where "Guns" steps off into darkness, trap-heavy beats and itchy, hyperactive synths. "Pearl" takes footwork and mashes it with a cutseypie chiptune hook, and star of the show "Risiko" shows restraint and texture in abundance as it builds and swells into your perfect set topper. Girls will dance to this, trust us.
