Review: Mikal is without a doubt one of the best purveyors of breaksy music around. It's slightly criminal that he doesn't get landed with this title more and hopefully his new album - Metalwork - changes things. It's a sensational album, a truly impressive tour-de-force of halftime and breakbeats, a showcase of just how raw and unfiltered drum & bass can be. It's exceedingly hard to pick out standouts because they all work so well, but 'Metalwork' itself is something special; a spacious, cutting edge track that rests on a monstrous kick-snare combination and just goes from there. The expansive bassline of 'Scrapyard Dub', the furious breaks of 'Breaks & Pads'...it doesn't get much better.

Review: Three years have passed since Horizon last rallied up the troops and embarked on a dead-night brain-burgling Dreamthief parade. As always it's an all-star cast with the likes of Amoss, Break, Naibu, Digital, Mikal, Mako, Need For Mirrors and many more cooking up some of their starkest, uncompromised and innovative cuts: the tight conga hypnosis of Breaks "Headway", the turbo piano rolls of Invaderz "Dukes Drift", the sublime cinematic jazz soul of Hydro & War's "Jam", the cascading, twinkling textures of Naibu's "Time Out", the neck-snap amen mechanica of Digital's "Spark Cut"... If this is the soundtrack to our innermost stories being syphoned from our heads at our most vulnerable sleeping states then sign us up and take the lot. Sweet dreams of thieved of this.

Review: The wait is over: Metalheadz have been teasing us with the prospect of a Mikal debut since at least 2012. Naturally the Swedish skirmish starter hasn't disappointed. 16 tracks of grazingly fresh designs we range from the sci-fi laser ballad opener "Patterns" by way of dagger-sharp dark tech ("Ruff Life"), elastic space drones ("Segunda") and even slinky, sassy funky drummer work on his ode to the master ("JB's Groove"). Complete with cameos from Break, Xtrah and Buraka Som Sistema's RIOT and Chimpo, this is the type of debut album you'd take home to meet the folks... If your folks understand the virtues of precision engineered drum & bass, that is.

Review: Hear that? It's the sound of drum & bass fans over the world rejoicing that Mikal - a man whose releases are sparing but always stately - is finally dropping his debut album imminently on Metalheadz. Here are three signs Wilderness is going to be the real deal: the pneumatic tech steps of "If We Become", the iced-out atmospheres and militant kick-snares of the Xtrah-collab "At The Controls" and the jazz-tinged liquid soul of "When The Wind Changes". Bring on the album!

Where They At/The Chosen/Control Of People
Mikal - "Where They At" - (4:36) 57 BPM
Mikal & Nymfo - "The Chosen" - (6:13) 58 BPM Hot
Mikal & RIOT - "Control Of People" - (5:54) 178 BPM
Review: Last seen collaborating with Need For Mirrors and HLZ on a single for Warm Communications, Swedish-born, London-based producer Mikal returns to Metalheadz for one solo cut and two team-ups. Solo track "Where They At" is full of Mikal's trademark bounce, a sparse, atmospheric production with jungle-inspired rhythm fragments darting off invisible surfaces in an irresistible manner. "The Chosen" sees him join forces with Nymfo for something a little more driving, as evil subs push things forward, while RIOT gets involved on "Control Of People", a slow-fast heavy hitter with crushing bass drops. You shouldn't need any proof that Metalheadz is still leading the way, but if you do then this should do the trick.

Mikal - "Strictly Rockers" (bonus track) - (5:17)
Played by: Rich Raw, Satin, Zen Dub
Review: Not one to lay low for too long, Mikal returns to Metalheadz. Don't be fooled by the sun-drenched artwork - If this selection proves anything, it's that this guy knows when to turn it up a notch. Packing nasty bouncing bass from the off in lead track "Status Low", there's a sense you'll never know where he's off to next. In the swaying bassy sexiness of "Killa Soundboy" and the blunted breaks of "Immaterial" you can hear progression and experimentation. "Clear", a collab with Nymfo has more bite than Jaws and bonus track "Strictly Rockers" is just madness. Pick up this EP. You deserve it.

Overlook - "Mirrors" - (6:06)
Data - "Floodgate" - (4:23)
Review: A very tidy collection of tracks here from Neil Monteiro's ever-reliable Horizons imprint. From the lush atmospheric sounds of Sunchase, who opens the 12-track compilation, through the ponderous calm of Clarity's "Head Rush" to the bass-driven cuts from June Miller & Reflekt and Nickbee & Malk, this "Internal Affairs 2" provides a great selection from across the deeper side of the D&B spectrum. Household names like Data and June Miller sit alongside new faces and upcoming talent. Other highlights include Pessimist - "Syncopation", a raw, dark little roller, and Blocks' melancholic offering "Undercurrents".

Genesis EP Part 3
Need For Mirrors - "Lofar" - (8:12) 173 BPM Hot
Nymfo - "Conscious Minds" - (7:24) 175 BPM
Mikal - "Epic" - (5:57)
Critical Impact & Komonazmuk - "Translation" - (4:37) 173 BPM
Review: Metalheadz are on devastating form right now and they happily slam down the gauntlet with this superb EP. Continuing in the same vein as the previous "Genesis" instalments they present a selection of fresh, upfront drum and bass which simply refuses to adhere to any template. The much heralded Need For Mirrors kick proceedings off with the deadly "Lofar" which sets the tone perfectly before Dutch maestro Nymfo follows with the dark stepper "Conscious Minds". Mikal's "Epic" is the standout track here, a pure streamlined aural assault and finally Critical Impact & Komonazmuk wheel out the Amens on the seriously heavy "Translation".

The Genesis EP
Data - "Compassion" - (6:23) 175 BPM Hot
Ulterior Motive & FD - "All That We Are" - (7:14) 172 BPM
Kiat - "Feeder" - (6:08) 172 BPM
Mikal - "Say Nothing" - (5:57)
Review: A tidy three track EP from the Metalheadz camp, The Genesis EP kicks off with Horizon's regular Data going in on the deep, minimal vibes with ticking beats, impassioned breathy vocal and tense, metallic chimes. Bournemouth duo Ulterior Motive team up with old friend and Critical hot shot FD for "All That We Are", combining their considerable skills for this stripped back, minimal/tech roller, with crisp breaks and a foreboding undertone. Finishing up with "Feeder" - incidentally Kiat's debut on Metalheadz - it's over and out on an experimental tip, with a bleepy melody bubbling over curious SFX and deep, murmuring b-line below. One for the headz.
