Review: Standing cannily for Second Hand Audio Gold, the SHAG Edits Vol 1 EP is the third release from Jamie Trench's blossoming Roots For Gold imprint and features plenty of that jacking house vibe from the man himself and some close friends. Trench sets the tone with "Velvet Curtains" which pairs crisp, forthright jacking rhythms with a procession of vocal samples, whilst close friend and fellow DJ partner Daniel Dalton opts for a more funk laden approach with "The Party People". Trench appears again later, teaming up with Angus Jefford for the bumping "Bringin' Tha Heat", and Mike Gill rounds out the EP with the more reflective "Inflatable Doll".
Review: With Hot Creations hurtling towards global dancefloor domination at a furious pace, it's down to their Hot Waves label to serve up more intriguing underground treats. This fourth collection of previously unreleased odds and ends features some contributions from well-known names - see Buckley's party-hearty, ragga-tinged "Back To The Tower" and the strobe light shuffle of Simon Baker and Robert James' "Get Up High" - but mostly impresses with its support of new and little-known talent. Few, for example, will have heard of Human Life & Annabel Englund (whose "Falling" is a synth-pop flavoured deep house delight) or Denny (check the thrilling, cowbell-powered "Shake The Club"), but their unheralded contributions stand out. If you're after hot new house, look no further.
Review: This third EP from Alkalino and Alphabet City's occasional MuchLove label gathers together more bright and breezy deep house gems from up and coming producers. Fil Lavin leads the way with "Feel As I Do", a typically bold and beautiful combination of atmospheric synths, big chords and classic vocal samples. Linntronix & Samm's "Musique Concrete" ups the ante with the sort of bold strings and melodies that will have you reaching for the strobes, before Mike Gill offers some deep and dirty midtempo bump in the shape of "Prankstar". A solid EP is completed by Debonair's "Trans Express", a decidedly Balearic fusion of clattering electro rhythms, disco samples and deep house chic.
