Review: Two years have passed since the last Masterworks Music label compilation, so this fourth volume is long overdue. It's another expansive affair, with boss man Danny "80s Child" Worrall offering up no less than 20 exclusives from a mixture of label regulars and new recruits. As you'd expect, there's much to enjoy, with highlights including the rubbery and celebratory disco goodness of Surgery Edits' 'Get Up and Boogie', the hazy house pleasure of Dirtytwo's 'Desire', the string-laden peak-time rush of Chris Grubinza's 'Feel The Rush', the revivalist 80s boogie brilliance of Slync and Evie Adams' 'Fantasy', and the wonderfully loved-up 80s soul-meets-nu-disco warmth of Paper Street Soul's 'Fwok!'.

Review: Having previously impressed via tooled-up, house style disco edits for a variety of well-known imprints (think Masterworks Music and Alpaca Edits), Mike Woods has now graduated to the world of original productions via a first EP for Doorly's Reptile Dysfunction label. Opener "Italo Nights" is particularly potent, with Woods peppering a surging, arpeggiated groove with shimmering synthesizer riffs and bold, house style piano riffs. His desire to mix and match elements from various '80s and '90s styles is brilliantly explored on "Vintage Dream", a cut that makes merry with electro drums, TB-303 lines, jacking percussion fills and occasional deep house chords, while "The Deepness" is an ear-catching trip into turn-of-the-90s deep house territory.

Review: With just 10 tracks to choose from, this Miami sampler from Doorly's Reptile Dysfunction label is a positively humble affair compared to some, but then again, a little bit of quality control never went amiss! The album takes in a range of house styles, from Griff (UK)'s piano-sprinkled 'Gonna Tell You' to Aniche's techy, Indian-infused 'Third Eye' to Rominimal don Horatio's JA-inspired 'Dub Nation', but unlike some of the 30- and 40-track beasts that are landing in stores right now, the standard is consistently high throughout, making this a very worthwhile addition to your basket. File under "good things come in small packages"!

Review: You're only five years old once, so why not celebrate in style? And here Warrington lad Danny Worrall's disco and re-edits label Masterworks Music do just that, with an anniversary collection packing a whopping 50 back catalogue nuggets. You'll excuse us the full track-by-track, then, but suffice to say that this is the label that helped launch the careers of Dr Packer and Natasha Kitty Katt, both of whom feature here, and with names like Ziggy Phunk, Rayko, Alkalino, Chuggin' Edits and Fabiolous Barker also on bill, you should already have a pretty good idea what to expect. Classy stuff all round, and a great VFM package - here's to five more years!

Review: Going by the volume of tracks on show, it would be fair to say that Masterworks Music's "Bag of Tricks" is not a little handbag, but more like a Mary Poppins style bottomless carpetbag. The label's latest rummage through its seemingly endless contents has been a successful one, with the 20 showcased cuts including a wealth of fine fusions of disco, house, boogie, electro and 80s soul. It's uniformly dancefloor-focused, with highlights including the Afro-house/disco-tech fusion of JB Dizzy, the driving, spaced-out disco-house grooves of Mike Woods, the loose-limbed, off-the-wall edits of Chewy Rubs, the sweet disco-soul bounce of RocknRolla Soundsystem, the delay-laden synth sing-along styles of Rayko and the hot-to-trot brilliance of Downunder Disco.

Review: With 15 tracks from nine different artists, this is the first compilation from Disco Fruit, making it the ideal opportunity to get acquainted with the Serbian label - or just great value for money if you're in search of some fine contemporary disco, funk and boogie grooves. Ranging from the sprightly jazz-house of Munky Five's 'Peace Of Jazz' to the Fatback funk of Mike Woods 'Get What You Need Y'All', via the Parliament/Zapp-esque squelch of JB Boogie's 'Party Underground', the attitude-y disco-house strut of Jack Roy & Peitzke's 'On The House' with its Scissor Sisters-ish vocal and Hiva's cheeky 'Superfreak'-biting 'Yea Yeah', there's no shortage of mirror ball goodness here.

Review: Mike Woods has previously delivered the goods on a number of popular re-edit imprints, including Masterworks Music, Cherry Cola and Disco Fruit. Here he stars on Alpaca Edits for the first time. Woods begins with the chunky, synth-laden, sun-kissed goodness of "Mind Funk", before dipping into his bag of throbbing, EBM-influenced Italo-disco tricks with "Hey Hey", a stomping rework of a Fairlight CMI-powered Trevor Horn production from 1984. It doesn't take a degree in crate digging to work out the track being rearranged on "Rapping Wordyhood"; for the record, Woods's revision is faithful to the original while giving it his own subtle tweak. Arguably best of all, though, is "Get Down", a loopy, floor-friendly revision of a lesser-known cover of an early hip-hop classic.

Review: In the hustle and bustle of the disco edit scene, the Disco Fruit crew are committed to keeping the spirit of classic '70s sounds alive. The modern elements are pushed to the back as JB Dizzy gets raunchy with the guitar licks, horn sections and some divine vocoder action on "Midnight Power". Mike Woods meanwhile knows just how to treat "Do You Like The Way That It Feels?" by Tempest Trio, keeping the soul of the original party burner alive while beefing up the drums just a touch. Across this 10-track collection the quality remains unflappable in its channeling of true disco principles.

Review: Here we have a juicy debut from re-edit man Mike Woods. Boasting five tracks, we quickly can see that he is all about squeezing the grooves out of classic disco, teasing each samples until it pops. "Hot Your Hot" kicks things off with six-minutes of extended funky riffage that occasionally gives way to some vocal joy. Elsewhere "It Seems To Hang On" is more vocal-orientated with a vintage Curtis Mayfield-style singer lost in painful rapture, "She's A Groovy Freak" is taught boogie fun, "That Dexter Thing" is a hypnotic, low-slung groove loop and "Right In The Socket" is an accelerated keyboard disco jam.
