Review: Mikey Velazquez is a DJ, Producer & Vocalist from Los Angeles, California, who has been a staple on the West Coast underground house scene since 2006. Following up wicked releases for like likes of Cajual and Classic, he appears here for DJ Sneak's always wicked I'm A House Gangster with the Can't Fight The Feeling EP. The title track is a tough and rolling cut that is more intense than the label's usual fair but impressive nonetheless; this one wouldn't be out of place on a label like Knee Deep In Sound or Lost. "Candy Flip" is a druggy afterhours cut bordering on minimal and electro house and those woozy pitch shifted vocals really help hammer the message home. "Crazy" featuring Mena is yet more loopy tech house business reminiscent of Terrence:Terry or Dyed Soundorom's earlier sound which is coming back in vogue on labels like Apollonia.
Review: Los Angeles native Mikey V takes a break from usual studio partner Eddie B to release this monster EP on Luke Solomon and Derrick L. Carter's Classic Music Company. "Illusions" is the kind of tunnelling dark house that's reminiscent of classic Felix Da Housecat vibes on Nervous. NYC deep house legend Eric Kupper is back on the scene after a long hiatus with a bit of help from Kenny Summit making the track a much deeper journey reminiscent of Sydenham & Ferrer's old stuff; not at all a bad thing. Finally London's Bas Ibellini fresh off a release on Tuskegee gives the track a sweet minimal makeover that's druggy and rolling and perfect for the afterhour's scene.
Review: Canadian tech house hero Nathan Barato is up next on Hot Creations, stepping away from his usual tough rolling tech-house sound for this full length. One half of duo The Roaches (with fellow Torontonian Carlo Lio), Barato has also released for the likes of Rekids, Cajual, Saved Records, Snatch and his very own Roots And Wings Music. He brings with him an old-school, energetic bounce throughout Past Forward, inviting some top names to join him for the ride. Kicking off with the early Chicago vibe of "Over You" featuring Montrealer Wayne Tenant, the freaky "She's A Rockstar" featuring Room 303, through to some hyper-boompty antics with Keith Rafael Perez, better known as Kid Enigma on "In Ya Soul" and even moments of super sexy deepness - as heard on "Don't Say It" featuring Mikey V.
