Review: Three tracks of leftfield electronic disco-pop make up this latest offering from Mirror People, who despite the name is in reality but a single, Lisbon-based Mirror Person, Rui Maia. He drafts in The Rotary Fifth's Michelle Bee (AKA Miss Bee) on co-writing and vocal duties for opener 'Human', which to these ears has a decidedly Bjork-ish kinda feel. 'Sea Of Possibilities' then comes on like early Chicago house meeting wonked-out Balearica in the synth store, while closer 'Comboios Amarelos' is one for those who like it full-on experimental and out-there with its Latin flourishes, cascading YMO-ish keys and ever changing beats.

Review: 'Shut Up', a strobe-lit fusion of contemporary nu-disco, classy synth-pop and classic house sounds, was one of the undoubted highlights of Mirror People's 2022 album 'Heartbeats, Etc', so it's no surprise to see it being released as a single. The original mix (track 1) comes accompanied by vocal and instrumental remixes by Portuguese twosome Oito//Oito, who deliver dark, throbbing takes full of moody sounds, squelchy TB-303 motifs and urgent, panicked electronics. The EP also boasts two tidy bonus cuts: Hard Ton collaboration 'Do The Boogie', a retro-futrist gem inspired by a mixture of sparse, early acid house productions and off-kilter 1980s proto-house jams, and the 16-bit synth sounds, arpeggio-style sequenced bass and wonky late-night electronics of 'Sea of Possibilities'.

Review: How many long-running compilation series are still going in this day and age? Ok, well respected ones then. Sean Brosnan's Future Disco series has always delivered the goods and can always be used as a benchmark for where the nu-disco world is at any one time. This time, it's (perhaps unsurprisingly) all about the vintage house vibes so not so disco then, but still a thrilling listen. Highlights include the slinky DJ T-esque "You're The One", the ever-brilliant DJ Koze's remix of hot newcomers Mount Kimble and the deeply enchanting Axel Boman remix of "Naughty".

Review: You know a nu-disco record is on to something when its chiming analogue melodies and bubbling synths sound like they were designed for a woodland rave full of tiny pixies, goblins and fairies. That's what "Reaction" sounds like (to us, at least), and it's rather good. There's a darker, dubbier remix from Tiago Zawa, too, for those who secretly want the fantasy rave to be taken over by villainous Alan Rickman lookalikes. "Odyssey", meanwhile, takes the cheery little people on a trip to the moon - think space disco with a dash of acid and old skool piano frippery - while Jacques Renault's dubby house remix sets off into deep space and just keeps on going.
