Review: To accompany Heiko Hoffmann's photography book of the same name, Above Board has compiled some of the best tracks to feature in Berlin clubs from the early 90s to nowadays. No Photos features the dramatic Detroit techno of 3MB's "The 4th Quarter" , while Mijk van Dijk and Tanith's 9-10-Boy project and Alec Empire's "SuEcide" capture the wide eyed rave of the early 90s. The compilation also features signature Berlin techno tracks - ss any record more closely linked to Hardwax/Berghain than the Maurizio Remix of Vainqueur's "Lyot"? -while the hypnotic bleeps of Sleeparchive's "Elephant Island" is a true minimal classic. Like the book, No Photos is expertly curated and executed.

Review: It's a well-known fact at this point that Modeselektor remains one of the most unique and interesting electronic acts currently out there. This album, entitled 'Extended' is a perfect showcasing of that commitment to exploring the unexpected, with each and every track offering us something a little bit unexpected, from the unusual rhythmic approaches of 'Keller' and 'Cthulhu Drums', through to the intense, metallic synthesizer pulses of 'Mean' and spacious soundscaping of 'Disc'. It's a full-on journey through production mastery in our eyes, with our individual favourite tracks including 'Bilbao' with its a combination of synthetic harmonics and unique percussion, along with stunning landscapes and harmonic designs of 'Lockdown', which sits majestically as one of our favourite synth pieces so far this year. Incredible work!

Negativity (Bambounou Remix)
Negativity - (4:56) 128 BPM
Negativity (Bambounou remix) - (6:46) 128 BPM
Review: Long-time allies and electronic deviants Modeselektor and Sound Pellegrino joined forces for the direct and unflinching "Negativity" which surfaced on the latter's SND.PE Vol 1 compilation, and here the former give the track a release all of its own on 50 Weapons. The original track is centred around a deranged speech of comical bile while the musical construction stomps out a simple synth riff and straight-up jackhammer drums. Bambounou steps up for a remix that gets locked into a more detailed, snaking kind of rhythm peppered with robotic flecks of synth but focused largely on dextrous drums and whip-crack slithers of samples from the original.

Trees / 50 Trees
Trees (feat Paul St. Hilaire) - (7:40) 120 BPM Hot
50 Trees - (5:14) 120 BPM
Review: After a long, well-publicised farewell, Modeselektor's label finally bits the dust, with a release from the owners. For the fiftieth and final record, the German pair have recruited long-time Rhythm & Sound vocalist Paul St Hilaire. He brings his baleful, shanty style delivery to the intense, rolling title track, and if anything tempers the intensity of the massive, shimmering chord builds that unfold as "Trees" progresses. On the other side, there's "50 Trees". On this occasion, Modeselektor decide to drop out the beats and the listener is left to contend with dark, textured soundscapes, a chilling but evocative goodbye to one of techno's key imprints.

Review: Representing a spread of some of the strongest operators in the ever-more fractious world of electronica, Bleep celebrates ten years of operations with this strong package of exclusive tracks. The styles run the gamut from nervy droning sub-techno courtesy of Gas through to Nathan Fake's charmingly fuzzy melodic bombast. Notable inclusions come from Machinedrum with an excellent line in live drum funk, Autechre refiguring the slow jam as a hallucinatory march, and Shackleton turning out some fiery percussive patterns. When the cast also includes Lone, Oneohtrix Point Never, Untold and many more besides, who needs any more convincing?
