Review: To accompany Heiko Hoffmann's photography book of the same name, Above Board has compiled some of the best tracks to feature in Berlin clubs from the early 90s to nowadays. No Photos features the dramatic Detroit techno of 3MB's "The 4th Quarter" , while Mijk van Dijk and Tanith's 9-10-Boy project and Alec Empire's "SuEcide" capture the wide eyed rave of the early 90s. The compilation also features signature Berlin techno tracks - ss any record more closely linked to Hardwax/Berghain than the Maurizio Remix of Vainqueur's "Lyot"? -while the hypnotic bleeps of Sleeparchive's "Elephant Island" is a true minimal classic. Like the book, No Photos is expertly curated and executed.

Review: It's been some three years since the last Monolake transmission on Imbalance Computer Music - if you exclude this year's 'long edit' of the artist's much loved Gobi - and a further four years since the last Monolake LP. Constructed in 2020 by Robert Henke, Archaeopteryx presents a vastly complex album of sound design taking in curious technology like a modified Linn Drum, recordings of various orchestral percussions and 'a few modular things' amongst and arsenal of enviable analogue machinery, and of course Ableton Live, that only a head like Henke could program and remain sane. The result is a deeply conceptual offering that twinkles, gurgles and tolls as much it does breath, communicate and confuse. Find electronica-laced, European informed dubstep in "Specimen Fractal" to piano minimalism and left of field microhouse in "Orbit Incomplete" amid a swathe of undefinable beat making and ambient focused processes. At 19-tracks long, Archaeopteryx comes with a dedication to Serbian composer, mathematician and physicist, Marko Nicodijevic, adding yet more intrigue to the evolution of the Monolake sound.

Review: The master returns. Robert Henke presents the fourth release in the V L S I series entitled G M O, the fifth and final edition. Strap on your seat belt "Geometry System"; its full throttle bass assault faces off with clandestine sonar communications, hacking the mainframe. The meticulous rhythm programming of those beautifully harsh metallic textures on"Mcp79" is the sound of malicious code attacking the network in a brute force attack. Finally "Offline" may seem like communications have ceased but you're mislead; this detailed collage of bleeps and blips are yet more sinister sonar transmissions encoded for full secrecy.

Review: Robert Henke returns with some more of his unmistakable composition and sound design, as only the inventor of Ableton could create. D E C includes three tracks, all, coincidentally, named after each letter. Well then; "Dystopia" features an immaculately programmed broken beat over stuttering snares and glitchy hi-hats while bizarre synthesis textures come at you from all ends of its audio spectrum. "Error" is a haunting ambient piece with its rich and evolving pads, transforming from dark strings to intergalactic soundscapes. Finally "Crash" gets back at you with another tight broken beat programmed to perfection while its steady onslaught of exquisite metal strikes and evil risers engulf you in 3D. Magnificent.

Review: Frank Zappa famously said that writing about music was like dancing to architecture, but would he have felt the same way if he had heard Monolake's work? The music that Robert Henke makes has many of the same qualities as futuristic buildings - as "Xor" demonstrates, it is complex and intricate, supported by steely foundations, but full of surprising designs. "Inwards" is in a similar vein and its brooding textures are the aural equivalent of a grey steel spy station in the middle of a snowy forest. Henke relaxes somewhat on the mellow "Ethernet", but even here there are echoes of his urban surroundings thanks to its tough concrete beats.

Review: Given that Krake is an annual, Berlin-based festival celebrating "challenging electronic music", you'd expect this second EP from their label offshoot to be packed with intriguing, left-of-centre gems. Happily, it is, with heaps of off-kilter goodness to enjoy. Arguably the highlight is Eomac's "No Name", a throbbing combination of jaunty, post-dubstep beats, dreamy chords and cut-up choral samples. Equally impressive are Phon.o's picturesque electronica cut "Tell Me" and "Interrupt" by the ever-reliable Monolake, a clanking, metallic foray into wonky, heads-down techno. In truth, all seven tracks are excellent, with the droning ambient contributions from Christian Vogel and Dammern also hitting home hard.
