Review: Monoloc aka Sascha Borchardt follows last year's release on Dystopian with this firing four-tracker for KNTXT. On "Sum", eerie tones unfold a pummelling rhythm track and firing percussion - Borchardt makes it stand out thanks to some deft drops and builds. "Left the Planet" sees him focus on a similar approach, with a focus on steely kicks, but on this occasion, the synths sweep in like a thick, poisonous fog. "Sky Is Broken" is a slower jam, with the German artist dropping waves of gurgling acid over a bass that rumbles at a mid-pace tempo. "Fender" is set to a similar pace, but this time, the maverick techno artist draws on that sombre synth that accompanies the death-pace beats.

Review: Tale of Us launch their Afterlife label in style with the Realm of Consciousness compilation. Bringing together some of the best-known names in contemporary techno as well as a group of newcomers, it moves effortlessly between esoteric moods. Tale of Us contribute the ambient intro, while Monoloc and Woo York are both in more mellow form than usual on the melodic "Phoenix" and "Poseidon" respectively. Meanwhile, Recondite contributes the sad melodies and throbbing bass of "Murphy's Law" and Locked Groove balances supernaturally beautiful hooks with powerful bass pulses on "Emeralds". Even more dance floor-focused tracks, like Obscure Shape & SHDW's "Die Wiederkehr", are filled with trancey melancholia.

Review: Sascha Borchardt has almost exclusively put out music by his Monoloc project on CLR, but he recently released an EP on Soma. Now the German producer continues his move into the mainstream with a release on Scuba's Hotflush. It's an atmospheric, esoteric release and proves that Borchardt is on the cusp of crossing over. The title track and "Makeless" are downtempo tracks, full of floaty, swirling textures and throbbing low end tones. However, it's "Trysome" that really stands out. The groove is inspired by Basic Channel's scuffled dub and the falsetto vocal could be from a New Jersey house track. United by a chiming synth, they come together to make for a bizarre but brilliant track.

Review: Soma welcomes talented German producer Monoloc to its roster. The title-track is a brilliantly moody track; it starts with an insistent, snaking rhythm, a wobbly bassline and shaking, sassy percussion. Midway through, the percussive elements give way to ponderous vocals and deep, dubbed out chord changes. It's a near perfect mixture of melody and functionality. On the flip side, "Cupel" sees Monoloc apply a similar approach, albeit in reverse. Pulsing bass licks underscore breathless melodies and it's only midway through that he lets loose with a series of percussive bursts. By then, the listener has already been seduced by Monoloc's sound.

Review: Hans Bouffmyhre's label blows out five candles to the sound of this pounding, relentless compilation. In true Sleaze fashion, Audio Injection and Monoloc deliver hypnotic, driving grooves full of grinding noises and powered by rolling drums. Flug ventures further down the wormhole with "Inside Of My Brain Cells", a tunnelling, pulsing groove that re-defines 'heads down', while some of techno's most respected artists also contribute as remixers. Par Grindvik's take on Gary Beck's "Standing On My Foot" is a chord-heavy roller; DVS1 delivers a prowling bass-led interpretation of Billy Johnston & Gennaro Mastrantonio's "Space", while the best reshape comes from Perc. The UK producer re-imagines Jean Ramesse's "Jobby Noir" as a tight metallic stepper with the same kind of robotic charm as Forward Strategy Group's work for his Perc Trax label.
