Review: Monty Luke's Nightdubbing project on Rekids was designed to showcase the Black Catalogue boss's deep love of dub-infused house and techno. This 13-track album combines previously unheard cuts with nine tracks previously showcased across a pair of EPs of the same name. It's a fantastic set all told, with highlights including the smacked-out electro-dub headiness of opener '40 Acres and a Terrabyte', the extra-percussive deep dub-house hypnotism of 'Bob Molly', the after-hours friendly minimalism of 'Star Storms', the Detroit-goes-dub techno pulse of 'New World/Old Future', the classic dub techno warmth of 'Dark Paradise', and the dub-wise deep house dreaminess of 'Avantgarde Dancehall'. Throw in a handful of tidy ambient and digital dub tracks, and you have a genuinely superb long-player.

Review: Monty Luke's follow up to his latest REkids release arrives via Nightdubbing and in the form first of all as "Supernova" - a deep blend of spacey textures with retro vocal samples. "Starstorms" delves further into the cosmic unknown with driving bass rhythms and raw pads, while "New World / Old Future" showcases Luke's mastery of scratch-like drums and intricate melodies. "Avantgarde Dancehall" adds a psychedelic twist with wonky sonics, while "Travelling 'Round The Sun'" closes the release with dub-rooted drums and spoken word poetry. Dope. Drawing from his Detroit roots, Luke's futuristic soundscapes continue to captivate, pushing boundaries into mainstream techno and cultural storytelling at its finest.

Review: Some 15 years after Benjamin Frolich and Tom Bioly launched their Permanent Vacation label with a fine compilation of the same name, the Munich-based pair return with a seventh showcase of treats from the imprint's now sizable roster of artists. As you'd expect, it's an eclectic and uniformly high-quality affair, with the 22 included cuts touching on everything from cheeky electro covers of Chris Rea (DMX Krew's rather good take on 'On The Beach'), deep nu-disco (the star-fall synths and Italo-disco bass of Kendal's Basorexia') and sun-soaked, 80s synth-pop-meets-dream house bliss ('Digital Joy' by Rees), to sleazy slow acid ('Lose Your Soul' by Zilas on Acid), late-night proto-house revivalism (Felice's 'Just Passing By') and rushing, breakbeat-driven dancefloor dreaminess (Dharma's 'The Epiphany'). In a word: excellent.

Thomas Melchior - "What The-?" - (6:56) 123 BPM Hot
Doc Link - "Stop Playin'" - (7:30) 125 BPM
Review: American underground hero Monty Luke returns with more hot tracks from his Black Catalogue. The Detroit based imprint follows up some great releases recently by Bay Area producer Sepehr and legend Dave Aju with this great various artists EP. The label boss himself kicks things off under the Mandingo alias with the deep hi-tech soul transmission of Mandingo - "Jabari", and reappears with Slope 114 on the trippy deepness "Crystal Ball" led by some truly sultry vocals, Minimal house don Thomas Melchior kicks off Modern Underground Music Vol 4 with the hypnotic sorcery of "What The?" and ending things on a well funky note with the late night dusty disco flavour of "Stop Playin'"

Ghostown Traffic - (6:56) 120 BPM
Rude Photo - (6:22) 123 BPM
Turnt Out (FX mix) - (5:22) 122 BPM
Review: 2020 Vision sub label Fina is still delivering the goods, this time courtesy of Motor City staple and Black Catalogue main man Monty Luke. There's a whole heap of seriously dark soul jams on here and they all pack some punch. Take for instance the tough, bass driven tech house of "Your Love" or even "Rude Photo" which is deeper and sexier but with equal intensity. But our money is on "Ghostown Traffic": a thumpin', funky, surefire dancefloor bomb that'll do the job any night and very typical of the Monty Luke we know. The glitchy and uplifting broken beat on "Turn Out (FM Mix)" commands your attention too. Nice one!

Throne Of Black Catalogue
Carter Bros - "Jamaica Burning" (version 2) - (6:02) 118 BPM Hot
Monty Luke - "Behavior Detection" - (6:21) 121 BPM
Pixelife - "Five Month Survey" - (9:39) 120 BPM
Pixelife - "The Doctor Is Out" - (5:33) 122 BPM
Review: NYC label Throne Of Blood pay tribute to Monty Luke's Black Catalogue by inviting the chieftain himself and label-mates the Carter Bros to curate the A-side of their latest release, Throne Of Black Catalogue. The Carters provide a tunnelling, and at times progressive "Jamaica Burning" (version 2)", while Luke supplies a fuzzy-keyed, snare popping burner with "Behaviour Detection" - a track which sounds like a well behaved Kyle Hall. Horn Wax's Pixelife then delivers two tracks, with "5 Month Survey" fit for any jacking Ibiza dancefloor; "The Doctor Is Out" stays in the jacking zone too - with its marching snares, there's an added triumphant italo aspect.

Monty Luke - "Through The Galaxies" - (5:24) 120 BPM Hot
Fhloston Paradigm - "Chasing Rainbows" - (2:31) 120 BPM
The Carter Bros - "Ritual Business" - (7:45) 122 BPM
Kuru - "The Draconian Hybrids" - (5:12) 130 BPM
Review: While Modern Underground Music Volume 1 may be a cumbersome title, it's certainly accurate. You see, this split EP is unflinchingly contemporary and touches on a multitude of styles and sounds. There's some loose, off-beat, hip-hop influenced instrumental action (Artie Strongman's delicious "Impressed To Dress"), some fuzzy analogue house gear (the Disco Nihlist-ish "Chasing Rainbows" by Fholston Paradigm) and even a dash of spacious, slightly cosmic hip-house (Monty Luke's "Through The Galaxies"). The Carter Brothers also dazzle with their trip back to the days of loose-limbed techno (check the Detroit riffage and tribal drums on "Ritual Business"), while Kuru goes all crunchy and spooky on the excellent "The Draconian Hybrids". Top stuff.

Tomorrow EP
Yesterday & Today - (10:03) 121 BPM Hot
Tomorrow - (8:30)
Review: Steadily working his way up with a sumptuous deep house sound, Monty Luke, Carl Craig's right-hand man at Planet E, appears on his own fledgling imprint with some surefire party rockers. "Yesterday & Today" ticks away in all the right places, using an urgent vocal to create tension while the same relentless bassline keeps hammering away at your dancing organs. "Tomorrow" is a stranger affair, taking an unconventional approach to beat-mapping which calls to mind the earliest drum machine workouts of the early Detroit forefathers. With pads to match, it's clearly a nod from Monty to those that came before him and he makes it work a treat.
