Review: This time last year, Parisian imprint La Belle - run, at least in part, by Golden Bug and Herr Styler - slipped out their first release. 12 months on, they present an impressive resume of their output to date. Focusing on a stylish, knowing, basement-friendly take on nu-disco, with nods to house, acid, punk-funk and electro - La Belle Season One is a riotous collection of floor-friendly jams. From the acid-infused 4/4 funk of Freeform Five's remix of Golden Bug's "One Way" and the inspired Italo of Moon Runner's "Tlatohua", to the Balearic disco-goes-rave stylings of Pete Herbert's rework of Lou Teti's "Talk About It", there's much to admire. In fact, you'll struggle to find a stronger collection of contemporary disco-inspired business.
Review: Mexican duo Moon Runner deliver their strongest EP to date, this time for Dicky Trisco and Pete Herbert's Maxi Discs imprint. "House Track One" has a New York '87 feel to it, all dubbed out proto-house riffs, chunky beats, twittering synth flutes and neat boogie touches. Mr Herbert remixes, adding some Balearic (or possibly Adriatic) flavour alongside a thunderous synth bassline. "House Track Two", meanwhile, goes deeper and dubbier whilst retaining the same proto house vibe, sounding not unlike an early Paul Simpson house production with a slightly tighter groove. An excellent package concludes with Dicky Trisco's bouncy, piano laden re-cut.
Review: Fledgling Gomma offshoot Toy Tonics arrive at their third release, reaching out across the Atlantic to take in an excellent EP from Mexico City duo Moon Runner. Formed of La Royale and Juan Soto, Moon Runner specialise in a raw brand of house music that relies on thick analogue bass lines, disjointed melodies and heavily funked out rhythms, which is best demonstrated on EP opener "Cultural Track One." It bears obvious comparisons with the Central American branch of Matias Aguayo's Comeme and it's little surprise that Daniel Maloso has been called on to add his mind bending production idiosyncrasies to the track.
