Need A Help 22 - (4:13) 125 BPM Hot
Review: If you're looking for some proper dirty, lowdown funk vibes, you won't do much better this week than this four-tracker from French producer Morlack, which indeed makes its intentions clear from the outset thanks to the rather rude spoken female vocal that kicks off 'Boogaloo 22'. Once that's out of the way, you're in for 20 minutes of sleazy, grinding beats, low-slung basslines and James Brown-esque vocal shouts that should satisfy even the most pernickety of funkateers, helped along in the case of 'Need A Help 22' by some cheeky AWB nods. The exception to the rule is 'Poopoo Lala', which has an 80s electrofunk/boogie feel and comes topped with the vocal from Jocelyn Brown's 'Ego Maniac'. Good stuff!

Review: Morlack on Funk Blasters? What more could we ask for as these two goliath figures join forces for a super rhythmic outing, kicking off with groovy rhythmic clinks and sweeping vocal overlays of 'Poplife'. Next up, the bulbous drum bubbles and unorthodox percussive inputs of 'Do Ur Body Snatchers', putting a smile on our faces that goes absolutely nowhere as 'Beyond The Flipside' continues to upgrade the intensity of the project with another thumping piece of bassline action. Finally, we take things down a fidget-inspired avenue as '123' gives us one last grinding punch of low-ended energy, rounding things off with a tasty meal of organic drum energy. Fiery business!

Ewan Hoozami - "Rock More" - (3:48) 120 BPM
Review: As always with the Breakbeat Paradise Recordings crew, we are in for a treat as they unleash the full version of the second 'Badass Funk' compilation, jam-packed with colourful originals and vibrant sampling displays. Featuring eight exciting creations, the vibes stretch from the soulful sample slicing of 'Step Up' from The Breakbeat Junkie and DJP and disco-infused melodic switches of 'Dancing Mood' from Turntill, Merlin & Crosby, to the the more euphoric synth tops and bubbling drums of Ewan Hoozami's 'Rock More' and more relaxed grooves of BadboE's 'The Suicide Thing'. We also hear some tidy work from Morlack on 'Hydraulic Roof', alongside some oldschool finesse on Tosses' 'Same Old Funk'. The whole project oozes class, but our highlights have to include the scatty percussive switches and signalong melodies of B-Side and Kurnal MC's 'Each & Every Day', next to the funkadelic bass twangs of 'Funky Weekend' from Roast Beatz. Awesome stuff!

Morlack - "Fall In Love With Me" - (6:47) 58 BPM
Pecoe - "Champion" - (3:55) 116 BPM
Review: It's difficult to envisage a Breakbeat Paradise drop that doesn't feature a serious tonne of quality, with this latest collection of 13 powerful creations making up the 'Boots Of Paradise' collection. The project takes a very central theme of reigniting hip hop vocals with dancefloor-ready reworks, from the classic Biggie sampling of Crash Party's 'The Juice' to the old school slicing of 'Ice Cream' from LROY and Aliens In Denmark's 'Chatty Tramp'. Even with this pretty solid central theme, the project has a lot of variation involved, from the sharpened drum punches and modernized synth slides of 'Brick Bounce' by Towlie DJ, to the more 4x4 influenced grooves of Morlack's 'Fall In Love With Me'. Our standout highlight for the whole drop would have to be Pecoe's 'Champion', which balances crunchy drums with well designed vocal sampling, which also makes it a perfect final entry.

GetOff - (4:27) 58 BPM
Review: A legend of the breakbeat, sample disco, balearic and disco scene is one Morlack who turns in a huge EP of rock, R&B and pop sounds to touches of ragga, big band and San Francisco inspirations! Full of whooshing whites noise and sweet filter modulation, "GetOff" explodes with a hype NYC vibe next to the Faith No More antics of "Epic Enough". "My Spin Is Ur Drama" takes the EP down a more chilled, balearic and R&B inspired path - with a rap-laced vocal section - alongside "Spirit Of The Skurred" which is the clearcut breakbeat diamond of this latest Funk Blaster.

Zouk La Se - (5:00) 132 BPM
Zoulous - (4:13) 87 BPM
Way Out - (4:37) 110 BPM
Review: French producer Morlack is at the controls for this latest installment in the 'Katakana Edits' series. On 'Way Out' he reworks a 1982 Steve Arrington track of the same name, while 'Anticipation' mines Mtume's 'Anticipatin'' from 1980, so that's your boogie lovers covered, while those in search of rawer funk pleasures can head for 'Some Dues To Pay', which revisits a 1971 cut from Little Beaver AKA Willie Hale. Elsewhere, 'Zouk La Se' draws on the 1984 track by Guadeloupean band Kassav' which spawned the 'zouk' dance craze in Latin America and the Caribbean, while 'Zoulous' was originally a 1988 French pop hit for female duo Les 36'15.

Review: Within the world of breakbeat, there are few names held in such high regard as Morlack, who continues his incredibly consistent run this time around with a five track package on Funk Blasters, that being the fourth edition of his 'Cheeky Edits' series. We begin with the 80's inspired drum smashes and stripped back vocal sampling on 'Breakin', followed by groovy bass guitar licks of 'Telepathy' and pulsating retro synth work of 'Ur Life'. The quality levels remain incredibly high throughout as we then take in 'Da Bomb', a disco-ready roller decorated with glistening guitar riffs and a well sampled chorus block, before the brick wall drum smashes of 'Funky Stuff' see us out in style. Excellent work.

Review: It's been a very exciting 2019 for Morlack, who continues his run of top quality releases by teaming up here with the ever-ready Funk Blasters team for the third edition of 'Cheeky Edits'. We kick off with the classy sample work and pulsating drum pressure of 'Rumba', before moving into the spaced out percussive structures of 'Momie' and latin-inspired arrangements of 'El Ray'. Next, 'Masta Rocka' arrives with a real punchy drumline, before the the almost 80's sounding compositional layout of 'Da Bird' rounds us off with a bang.

Agony - (4:50) 118 BPM
Review: Bustling breakbeat badman turned re-edit hero Morlack has served up some scintillating stuff of late, including a brilliant four-tracker on Katakana Edits. Here he gets his re-edit groove on for Thunder Jam. It's a decent label debut which moves from vaguely Balearic '80s Afro-boogie (the synth and filter-sporting "Kalimba Tree") to chunky, hard-wired P-funk brilliance (the Bootsy Collins-esque bounciness of "Agony"), via smooth, slick and seductive '80s soul ("Control", whose slap-bass, screeching car tyre effects and sassy female vocals are particularly alluring) and horn-toting, big studio electrofunk ("Lovin' U"). In other words, it's another tidy collection of cuts.

Review: Within the realms of Breakbeat, the name Morlack is to be treated with some serious respect, as he continues to create fantastic original material, showcased here by his involvement with the awesome Breakbeat Paradise Recordings crew. From this funkadelic grooves of 'One Dutch', moody bass movements of 'Manteca' and soul inspired harmonies of 'Bush Beat', we get off to one hell of a start. Following this, the well-sampled vocal leads of 'Pull Up' really do the business before we finish up the project with a dive into the more slower-paced 'No Illusions', packed with catchy rap vocals and groovy drumwork.

Review: Funk Blasters are back and this time alongside the king of cuts himself; Morlack, who arrives on the scene with a fresh bag of magic as he unveils the second volume of his 'Cheeky Edits' series. We begin with the shuffling disco beats of 'Cruncked House', before moving into the soul grooves and expressive riffs of 'Feel It'. To follow; 'Smthing Special', another futuristic soul slice, leading into the darkened hip hop drumwork of 'A Toke'. The project then rounds off nicely with 'Knee Dip', a funkadelic blend of crunchy rhythms, precise vocal slices and moogy bass leads, packed with flavour and energy.

Review: This decidedly epic collection marks Katakana Edits's first foray into the compilation market and is designed as a "best-of" style outing. It boasts 30 reworks, mash-ups, remixes and re-edits gleamed from the prolific imprint's first 50 singles. Naturally, club-ready material comes thick and fast, with a multitude of genres - think swamp funk, disco, dub disco, electrofunk, Italo-disco, hip-hop, reggae and dancehall - and wide variety of tempos represented. Naturally, some of the reworks tend towards the well known, though there are also plenty of rubs of lesser-known gems for those who want to dig deeper than familiar peak-time anthems. Most importantly, the standard remains impressively high throughout.

Review: Congratulations to the Katakana Edits crew, who have now reached a half century of releases. Their 53rd EP comes from the mysterious Ben Morlack from Paris. He's had other releases recently on Funk Blasters, Breakbeat Paradise, Relative Dimensions, Homebreakin, Tru Funk and Boogie Boutique: so you know where this guys coming from! "Train" is a well funky joint with some super powerful vocals retained from the original of this fine track - that sounds quite familiar. Next up you get served to some serious soul power on the wicked "There It Is".

Review: If ever there was a resident curator of the esteemed nu-disco Katakana Edits series, it's the Go-Go hero Morlack. Frankly, he's always at it. Here he's back for numero 47, this time rustling up three new cuts for our itchy disco feet. "Ring" goes for the jugular, taking a well-known (to the point of wedding disco classic) 70s barnstormer and adding some seriously filthy electro arpeggios to the mix. Next up, "Up Down" is a slow and groovy party breaks cover version of Diana Ross' perennial classic. Last but not least is "Tell Me Something Good" which is relaxed and mellow reggae fun at its finest.

Review: If life teaches you anything it's to expect the unexpected. Here the mighty re-edit label Katakana deliver their 42nd instalment of scapel jobs. However, this time, rather than have a specific producer curate an EP, they've shaken up the formula and delivered a compilation of edits. There's a whopping 24 reworks to enjoy too, many thrills and spills, but our favourites include Morlack's explosive drum-lead MJ cover, "Don't Stop", Mister Vagz' corny 60s mash-up "Love Me Venus" and Dim Zach & Deem's baggy rework of the Happy Monday's sublime "Loose Fit".

As usual, the production quality of his sample-fuelled jiggery is second to none, with the slow and elastic funk of smoocher "The Dude", the slap bass twitcher "Morning", the stormin' electro-funk of "Dusic" and the raw, cowbell bustin' hoe-down of "Spinnin'" proving to be dancefloor devourers one and all.

Review: Morlack comes correct once again with a 27-track collection of total funk blasts. Naughty booties, reversions and mash-ups galore, the eclectic vibe ranges from skippy hair-swishing party rock ("Funky Woman") to cheeky Ting Tings reversions ("Hang It Up") via crazy blends of Zeppelin, Black Box and Outkast ("Ride On A Whole Lotta Love"). Elsewhere we hit gems like the big disco string B.M.W sucker punch "Get A Lil Stupid" and Bowie-busting block party slammer "Triple Fame". Morlack's repertoire was already bulging before this - now it's just ridiculous. Easily one of the best masters of the illicit art of mashery.

Review: How many edit series can boast reaching a tenth volume? Ok, well how many can boast of attaining ten successful ones? Here French funk party commander Morlack provides five new top-notch retweaks that take no prisoners. "Loose It" is a tight James Brown-style jam that occasionally veers into French electro territory, "Let's Boogie" is all funk grooves and tough hip-hop breaks, "Big Pill" is total rubberband disco-funk,"Capital S" is more electro-boogie and finally "Tough" wraps things up with a big ole slap bass and flute singalong!

Review: French funkateer Morlack gets lively with an EP that belies its unforgiving title... Far from sounding cruel, each of the five cuts on here resonate with a sprightly, positive glow. The big problem is where to start: do you kick off your party with the slap-bass naughtiness and party chant of "It's Hot"? Or you go straight for the jugular with the rampant "Do It To Me"? Alternatively you could press the 'carnival' button and get freaky with the heaving horns of "Mamboteca". How about throwing the party into delightful disarray with the Cypress Hill/Bootsy booty "Refugee Camp"? Or, for your final option, causing a mosh pit with the Busta-front electro-techno-rock clash "Tical"? It's all about the options, of which Morlack gives you plenty. Cruel? Too generous more like!

Review: French breaks-bass producer and remixer Morlack has made a name for himself with some cheeky edits and sub-punishing originals over the last few years, but "Where Do U Get Ur Funk From" is his first full-length foray for the Funk Blasters label and it's a gem from start to finish. A mix of straight up raw JB funk (as on "Put It Out") to heavyweight nu-funk breaks ("Soul Train Line"), Morlack lends his hand to all manner of styles and keeps things buzzing and distinctly party-flavoured over the LP's thirteen tracks.
