Review: This is, if we're counting correctly, French producer Morlack's 20th EP in the Katakana Edits series so far, so if you're a fan of the label generally the quality's pretty much assured! Coming under the scalpel this time out are a couple of underplayed jams from the 80s - El DeBarge's 'You Wear It Well' from 1985, and Imagination's 'Tell Me Do You Want My Love' from 1981 - before he takes what can safely be classed as something of a left-turn in the context of contemporary re-edit culture, giving us a remarkably effective, disco-fied makeover of new jack swing maestro Keith Sweat's 'Just A Touch' from 1996.

Review: Morlack has been a Katakana regular since Vol 10, and now he returns with four more re-edits for your dancing pleasure. First to get the treatment are Earth Wind & Fire, as Morlack revisits 'Spread Your Love' from 1983's 'Powerlight' album. He's dug a little deeper for the other three, whose sources have our disco detectives beat, but 'Dr Jekyll' features a spoken French male vocal, female backing vox and some fine organ work, 'Can't Fight The Feeling' has a west coast electrofunk feel and analogue synths a-gogo, while 'Mighty Fine' is a smoother groove from the soul/boogie school of thought.

Review: If you're looking for some proper dirty, lowdown funk vibes, you won't do much better this week than this four-tracker from French producer Morlack, which indeed makes its intentions clear from the outset thanks to the rather rude spoken female vocal that kicks off 'Boogaloo 22'. Once that's out of the way, you're in for 20 minutes of sleazy, grinding beats, low-slung basslines and James Brown-esque vocal shouts that should satisfy even the most pernickety of funkateers, helped along in the case of 'Need A Help 22' by some cheeky AWB nods. The exception to the rule is 'Poopoo Lala', which has an 80s electrofunk/boogie feel and comes topped with the vocal from Jocelyn Brown's 'Ego Maniac'. Good stuff!

Review: Katakana Edits regular Morlack steps up to the plate for the latest in the series, bringing with him four reworkings of (at least semi-) forgotten gems from the boogie era. First to get the treatment is T-Connection's 'Groove City' from 1981, swiftly followed by Leon Haywood's 'If You're Lookin' For A Night Of Fun' from 1980. The source material for the other two cuts remains sadly unidentified but 'Musica Americana' has a Mexican or Latin American flava while 'Ready Ur Your Love' is another early 80s-sounding jam with a growling, almost Tom Jones-esque male vocal.

Review: As always with the Breakbeat Paradise Recordings crew, we are in for a treat as they unleash the full version of the second 'Badass Funk' compilation, jam-packed with colourful originals and vibrant sampling displays. Featuring eight exciting creations, the vibes stretch from the soulful sample slicing of 'Step Up' from The Breakbeat Junkie and DJP and disco-infused melodic switches of 'Dancing Mood' from Turntill, Merlin & Crosby, to the the more euphoric synth tops and bubbling drums of Ewan Hoozami's 'Rock More' and more relaxed grooves of BadboE's 'The Suicide Thing'. We also hear some tidy work from Morlack on 'Hydraulic Roof', alongside some oldschool finesse on Tosses' 'Same Old Funk'. The whole project oozes class, but our highlights have to include the scatty percussive switches and signalong melodies of B-Side and Kurnal MC's 'Each & Every Day', next to the funkadelic bass twangs of 'Funky Weekend' from Roast Beatz. Review: It's difficult to envisage a Breakbeat Paradise drop that doesn't feature a serious tonne of quality, with this latest collection of 13 powerful creations making up the 'Boots Of Paradise' collection. The project takes a very central theme of reigniting hip hop vocals with dancefloor-ready reworks, from the classic Biggie sampling of Crash Party's 'The Juice' to the old school slicing of 'Ice Cream' from LROY and Aliens In Denmark's 'Chatty Tramp'. Even with this pretty solid central theme, the project has a lot of variation involved, from the sharpened drum punches and modernized synth slides of 'Brick Bounce' by Towlie DJ, to the more 4x4 influenced grooves of Morlack's 'Fall In Love With Me'. Our standout highlight for the whole drop would have to be Pecoe's 'Champion', which balances crunchy drums with well designed vocal sampling, which also makes it a perfect final entry.

Review: Following a short break, we are very pleased to see Morlack back at it again, reunited with the team at Breakbeat Paradise for a fiery five track display of breakbeat brilliance. We kick off super punchy drum processing and groovy bass riffing of 'Papa Was', which kicks us off with some sample-heavy goodness, followed by the colourful instrumentation and uplifting textures of 'Closet Freak'. The intensity then increases as we jump into some skippy vocal techniques on 'Plastic Love', moving into the more sweeping textures and raucous drum arrangements of 'It Gets To Me'. Finally, the project is rounded off with some finesse as we dive into the 2020 mix of 'Freakout', giving the project a stripped back finale allowing an easy landing. Lovely work!

Review: Upbeat, unpretentious nu-disco and disco-house are the order of the day here, much along the lines of Hed Kandi's mid-noughties Disco Kandi/Disco Heaven comps. With 14 tracks to choose from there's plenty of dancefloor bang for your disco buck, and while there's undoubtedly a whiff of fromage in the air in places (Badboe's rap-vocalled, Sister Sledge/InDeep-referencing 'Best Of My Beats', for instance, isn't a million miles from a Will Smith production) there are also slightly deeper pleasures awaiting those who are prepared to dig around a bit - see, for instance, the raw disco-funk of 'Miss Broadway' or Joy Legend's Hammond-sporting 'Pass It On'.

This latest album episode goes by the name of 'Bluff' and encapsulates everything we love about Morlack's sound, from the stunning instrumental sampling and punchy drum work of 'Colibri Shine' to the dipping grooves of 'Sex Me'. For us, the highlights here have to include both the excellent vocal slicing of '2Be In Family', and of course the horn-heavy riffs of the title track 'Bluff'. For us the immediate highlights have to be the the reggae infused design of 'Meditation' from Leygo, the smooth patois vocal presence and from Richard Smiths on 'Fire Sound' from Illgorhythms and of course the crunchy drum design and writhing bass tones on Pecoe's 'Boom'. Overall this is a great compilation, showcasing a vast array of styles without diverting from the common theme of the project.

Naturally, club-ready material comes thick and fast, with a multitude of genres - think swamp funk, disco, dub disco, electrofunk, Italo-disco, hip-hop, reggae and dancehall - and wide variety of tempos represented. Naturally, some of the reworks tend towards the well known, though there are also plenty of rubs of lesser-known gems for those who want to dig deeper than familiar peak-time anthems. Most importantly, the standard remains impressively high throughout.

Review: Uh-oh! It's French breakbeat wizard Morlack back to his old tricks! Returning to Breakbeat Paradise, the prodigious beat-maker drops the second chapter of Ghetto Disco, a series which, as you can probably tell by the name, focusses on the more 'gangsta' side of disco and boogie. In fact, these five cuts are of the latter than they are the former, stomping and chomping their way across arrangements with some fiery electro bass and cosmic tones. There's even a nice layer of hip-hop sensibility in there for you, namely through the party-ready funk-bomb by the name of "Smokin N Drinkin". Big and bad - here to party!
