Statements Of Nature EP
Motiv & Luke Truth - "Statements Of Nature" - (4:52) 174 BPM
All I Want - (4:51) 174 BPM
Canopy Skies - (4:33) 174 BPM Hot
Parkscapes - (4:29) 174 BPM
Review: Rumour has it the v at the end of Motiv stands for V Recordings. And if it doesn't. Then it does now because r'kid Mo is slapping Bryan Gee's soulful imprint silly right now. Following 'Fever Dreams' earlier this year comes this elegant EP that oozes funk and fun. 'All I Want' is especially of note. Coming on strong like Random Movement on steroids, it sets the pace for other highlights such as the hazy Technimatic-style 'Parkscapes' and Luke Truth's gilded tones on the titular 'Statements Of Nature'. V also stands for very sick.

Touch & Feel - (4:32) 174 BPM Hot
Review: Hot on the heels of Bungle's exceptional EP, the mighty Motiv now makes his debut on long-standing vibe platform Influence. And with it he brings a little nod towards a very picturesque woodland area in Stockport called Etherow. We're a download store, not a UK tourism site so we'll spare you the finer points on Motiv's inspiration but we can tell you this is another exceptional soulful escapade from the label. Gradually building in weight and depth over the entire EP, we kick off with dreamy vocal cuts featuring Luke Truth before getting darker and more cosmic. Highlights include the springy house-like shimmers of 'Light Years' and the Detroitian dynamic of 'Touch & Feel'.

Liquid Lab Remixed Volume Two

Channel - "Blackeye" (Flaco remix) - (4:52) 174 BPM Hot
Zar & Dan Harris - "All That Jazz" (Ben Soundscape remix) - (4:56) 175 BPM
Flaco & Glen E.Ston - "Music Takes Control" (Zar remix) - (5:33) 174 BPM
Motiv - "Lose Control" (Chug remix) - (5:20) 58 BPM
Review: Liquid Lab bring the soulful science into our lives once again with this crucial remix collection featuring an all-star cast of talented musicians and vibe maestros. Flaco takes things super deep with his twist on 'Blackeye' while Intrigue's Ben Soundscape gets us swinging our pants with his pristine breaks and big double bass action on 'All That Jazz'. Elsewhere Zar goes super deep and poignant with his take on 'Music Takes Control' and 'Chug' brings the EP to a dreamy finish with their take on 'Lose Control'. Cosmic.

Review: Forever mixing up the styles and flavours, Motvi comes correct with this deep dark showcase on Heist's Calypso Muzak. 'Body Pop' sets the scene with juke-like beats and ghetto energy while 'Enkrypt' maintains the darkness with a techno build-up and a Enei-style riff and 'Scathead' gets us swinging from the rafters with its scorching percussion. Rounding up the EP is the skanked out sub rumbler 'TL Dub' and crucial remix from Illament of 'Taking Lives'. What's popping?

Jupiter - (4:36) 174 BPM
The Path - (4:33) 174 BPM
Review: From Manchester with love! Motiv brings his unique soul flavours to Celsius just in time for the sunny season. A cosmic affair from the off, 'Gravity' tears us away from the earth's pull with its dreamy pads and rocket fuelled bass twists. It's backed up by plenty more star-gazing flavours... 'Out Of Air' takes us round the dark side of the moon by way of shimmering guitars and gentle pianos, 'Jupiter' is a minimal workout with big cosmic washes while 'The Path' lands us safely back home with its jazzy cascades and more delicate keys. Stunning stuff. Bon voyage.

Review: Sub-liminal brings an end to the year that was, going out all guns blazing with on Air Part 2 featuring a bunch of wicked VIPs. Label staple Agro serves up several collaborations on here with the likes of Mentah, Raz, Diligent Fingers and Ghxsty. There's also a few offerings by the ever reliable Yatuza; our pick being the wonky stepper of "Distance" with Master Error. Elsewhere, Pyro pops up a few times throughout and was in fine form on "Smithdown Bass" and Prestige handed in a couple of quality dubs with neurofunk cut "Logical" being our pick of the bunch.

Review: West Midlands / Essex joint venture Co-Lab Recordings UK is run by Benny Colab & Heist who present their latest release by Manchester's Motiv, who follows up a great collaboration with Collette Warren on "Cloak & Dagger" a few weeks ago. The track acted as a teaser for his much anticipated full-length release here, titled Meraki Music. Featuring a dozen impressive tracks, all in collaboration with other talented producers and vocalists. Highlights include the emotive liquid drum 'n' bass of opener "Halcyon" featuring lovely vocals by Anya Asia, the seething neurofunk trip "Twister" with Dunk, as well as the darkside techstep of "Air" with Teej and the bittersweet beats of "Take Me Away" with singer Charla Green.

Cloak & Dagger - (4:36) 174 BPM
Review: Co-Lab Recordings is a joint venture by Benny Colab & Heist, run between the West Midlands and Essex respectively. Their latest release comes from London's Collette Warren, who collaborates with Motiv again to bring you a liquid drum and bass roller in the form of "Cloak & Dagger" in the tradition of legends like LTJ Bukem or Marcus Intalex. The tracks' soulful and emotive elements are the perfect backdrop for the breathtaking vocals that play centre stage throughout.

Acting Up
Acting Up - (4:28) 174 BPM
Review: Ahead of his debut album Motiv unleashes this warm and toasty roller - 'Acting Up'. Loaded with house-inspired sounds and flavours, there's some lovely organ style sounds on the bass, a big belting vocal and a funky groove that we guess would be described as liquid but it's got much more beef on the bones and spirit than a lot of liquid tracks do. Think Sl8r, think Marcus, think Manchester - this is proper soulful drum & bass.

Review: Manchester's Motiv embraces the positive feelings around right now with this emotional debut for Ray Keith's Dubplate Dread. Five of his most glistening, vibe-fuelled soulful rollers, this is his biggest release to date with massive cuts like the soaring vocal title track with its cosmic synths, bumpy bassline and hard-hitting vocal, the sleazy, slinky funk of 'Distractions' and the dusty, jazzy soul work out 'She Knows' all hitting some serious spots. Feel the love.

Review: Bang! 30 Sub-liminal tracks deeply dug from every corner of the Brighton label's vaults, all packaged up in a new VA concept album: On Air. Perfect for filling a few gaps in your collection, or new ears who've only just experienced the power and gritty funk of Agro's label, every cut is a highlight or a heavyweight. Warhead & Dutta's grizzly 2018 slap-about 'Don't Test' still melts your skin, Leaf's 2020 wonk-out 'Erby' still hit with high grade 23rd century funk, Pyro's 2020 'Tick Yes' will still blackmail you and your family with its sinister undertones. And that's just a mere tenth of this solid collection. Cop it.

Review: Liquid Lab are coming into your ears once again with more lovely music, this time it's with Motiv, who has been in the game to know how to craft a proper liquid number. All five tracks on this EP rest comfortably within the funkier, more atmospheric end of the liquid spectrum, and they make ideal late night or early morning listening. The title tune is quintessential, with bubbling celestial synth lines that rest gingerly alongside a wonderfully subtle, rolling bassline that strolls along with the serious grace and decorum. 'On the Verge' features up and comer Charla Green on vocals and it has a main piano riff that's just superb in its soulfulness, a common and tangible theme throughout this release. Lovely stuff.

Review: Fokuz are coming into your ears once again with more luscious deepness, this time around courtesy of Motiv, who has been around the block enough times to know how to craft a proper liquid number. All four tracks on this EP rest comfortably within the spacier, more atmospheric end of the liquid spectrum, and they make ideal late night or early morning listening. The title tune is quintessential, with bubbling celestial synth lines that rest gingerly alongside a wonderfully subtle, rolling bassline that strolls along with the serious grace and decorum. 'Orbit' links directly to the space theme present on this release, and it has a low end that's just superb in its soulfulness, a common and tangible theme throughout this release. Lovely stuff.

Review: Sub-liminal take a moment to look back over almost six years of hard graft at the future talent coal face. Having been responsible for so many bangers from so many now household names, it's a mean feat boiling it down to this mere 50 heavyweight highlights. All the label's key names are on board; Guzi, Dreadnaught, Nick The Lot, Too Greezy, Kumo, Version, Vital, Pyro, Motiv and many more dust off their past heavers, hurters and head-slappers to reflect on everything Sub-liminal has stood for and encouraged so far. From the deeper, more subtle bubblers (Sam Harris - 'Coffee Machine') to the most outrageous funk-ups (Warhead - 'Cranked') this EP has everything. When the Riddim hits you, you can't say no...

Review: Now in their 22nd year, Fokuz has to be one of the longest running - and certainly the most prolific - drum & bass labels to ever come out of The Netherlands. A prime spot for breaking new talent, and renowned for their glacial, atmospheric liquid sound, the label have that perfect balance of newcomers and established names which is reflected perfectly here on this reflective look-back over 2020. Highlights include Command Strange & Cnof's dusty soul delight 'Rainy Day', the twinkling cosmic funk of Maverick Soul's 'We In Here' and the shimmering soul of Askel & Elere's 'Honestly'.

Once again featuring an A-list rollcall of now household names, it's another reminder of how much heat Liondub International have cooked up over the years, supporting artists from their earliest moves. Highlights on this set include the turbo slammage and necksnap switches on Jayline's 'Anglo Saxxon', early hurly burly from the man like Macky on 'Black Widow' and the always-devilish bubbles of Motiv's 'Vultures'. And that's just three of 15 crucial example's of Liondub International future-focused benchmark. Get to know!

Mayday - (4:29) 174 BPM

Review: Motiv recently released a gorgeous liquid single, but this time around his outing on Original key is made of decidedly tougher stuff. Break The Spell is balanced nicely around rolling beats and choppier territory, and its title tune blends aggressive, stretched out bass work with precisely laid down percussive foundations. 'Doomed' is similar in the drums but more spacious and deeper in the low frequencies, its title accurately reflecting the sense of foreboding you'll be certain to feel. 'Mayday' rolls out with abandon, whilst 'Valves' is yet another expression of serious dancefloor intent. Super stuff.

Review: So it doesn't feel like we've had much of a summer this year. It also feels like the arts are being hung-up to dry right now. But at least the good folk at Sub-liminal care for us.... To mark the (albeit raveless) sunny season, they've put together a 50 (yes, fifty) track collection from some of the most exciting names in the game. From Dunk to Xav, RV to Warhead, Agro, Guzi, Shayper, Damage Report and so many more, this is the 'Summer Selection' we all totally need and deserve right now. Highlights include the Remarc levels of badness on Guzi's 'Area 51', the tension and staggered creepiness of Yatuza's 'Clich?' and the broadsword swathes of Motiv's buzzy bumper 'Necroplasm'. And that's just three out of 50. Thank you Sub-liminal. We need this more than ever right now.

Review: Doe, a deer, a female deer. Ray a drop of golden sun. That's The Sound Of Music, circa 1965. Boh, a banger, an absolute banger. Whey, a drop of golden gunfingers. That's the 'Sound Of Nuusic', circa right about now as the Manchester based label let rip with their third V/A experience. Now an annual thing for the label, it's their biggest collection yet as it's super-charged with blaze-ups from the best in the new-gen game. From Sl8r's opener to Conrad Subs' grand VIP finale by way of cuts from the likes of Teej, Sola, Kuma, Epicentre, Kumarachi, Motiv, Selecta J-Man and many more on-point future headlining names, this isn't just the sound of Nuusic, it's the sound of now.

Review: Coming in hot with an EP that's positively deadly, Motiv lands on Calypso Muzak in stunning form. Hypnotize is aptly named because it's just that: hypnotic. There's a rawness, a depth, to its elements and every inch of the package feels carved out of urban, rough-edged stone. 'Turmoil' is the highlight of the release, with a tantalisingly good drum line that tumbles ove ritself in eagerness to mess you up, its bassline companion not far behind and just rippling with force and movement. The title track samples the classic Biggie tune and puts a junglist spin on it, whilst 'Taking Lives' rolls out with abandon and 'Last Breath' is a cheeky, cheeky growler. Top notch.

Review: Northern scene legend Adam Wigglesworth sadly passed away on April 3. This is how his friends responded... By compiling one of the biggest tribute albums drum & bass has ever seen. Just look at the amount of talent on here: Pyxis, Euphonique, Nvrsoft, No Concept, Exile, Euphonique, Dawn Raid and so many more artists have contribute to this 45 track album of which all proceeds go to Adam's family. From the blazing bass riff of Sappo's late 90s style neck snapper "Hannibal" to Exile's turbine bass growler "Symbiosis" via Sl8r's jazzy, almost Detroit style vibes on "The Mill" and various bits from Wiggo himself, this is a heartfelt salute from the entire scene to a man who'll be sorely missed.

Review: Motiv is definitely one of the better up and coming producers out there and, with previous releases on a host of other labels, his aggressive sound is back with a vengeance here. Packed with harsh, barking tones and a stripped-back, industrial aesthetic, Motiv doesn't waste any time in laying out the rules: there are none. '40hz' is one of the heavier cuts, with a punching back end and an obstinate feel of solidness that reflects down all the way onto the rest of the tune. 'Warzone' is the title tune and you can see why, with a KoTR-esque approach to drawn out basslines and tough sonics that's underpinned by lovely metallic drums.

Review: Holy moly! This is how you smash open a new decade; a 50 track album absolutely drenched in stinkage. Now a tradition for DJ Hybrid's label, this anthem collection is one of the biggest to date with names and vibes across the spectrum. Epicentre, Kumarachi, Conrad Subs, Stompz, Veak, RMS and many more all bring their fieriest artillery with highlights bursting from the seams. Every single track slaps the dance from the stripped back drumfunk and demented mentasms of Substrate's "Throwback" to the mystic sitar twangs and heavy bass bangs of Euphonique's "Moksha" via ruded up Dread bass badness of the bossman's own "Lost In The Jungle". And that's not even the tippiest tip of this anthemic jungle iceberg. Don't dilly dally.

Review: Nussic are developing a bit of a reputation for spewing out some of the most venomous beats in the business and their talent for pushing some of the best artists on the jump-up spectrum is undeniable. Motiv is holding up that standard with his debut EP on the label and he's doing it in style, something clear right from the start of this EP. 'Gallows' reels you in with a lovely intro, it's upbeat beginnings quickly regressing to a really sick wall of pure energy that's reminiscent of Kings of the Rollers and insanity more generally. The rest of the release is equally aggressive, 'Fakes' being another highlight. Sick release.

Review: Liquid Lab essentially do what their name would suggest: they make deep music that touches your soul. It's one of the best small liquid labels out there and it'd definitely be worth your time to check out their stuff, starting with this EP from Motiv. This release is certainly deep, the title track kicking you off with a lovely combination of funky jazz samples and more melancholic ambience. It's a trend that repeats itself over and over, especially on 'Clap Your Hands', which has a gorgeous depth yet feels rooted right in the moment. 'After Hours' is the is all about the jazz vibes and it does this very nicely, stretching piano cords out over a rolling beat.

Review: Forget your daft screechy dubstep variant of the same name, Sub-liminal deal strictly in proper riddims. Wobbly riddims, fat riddims, stinking riddims, gully riddims. They have done for almost five years now, and this new Riddim Return collection is a reminder of just how much ground they cover, how many super talented darksmiths they work with and how much skin of yours their releases will melt. Highlights on this 50 track strong collection (yes, 50!) come from every angle but you'd be mad not to lick a shot from Agro & Raz on their melted bass weird-out "Ah Like It", do air trumpet to Warhead's "Cop Killa" or get wonked the heck out by Leaf's concrete steps on "Hold Up". Dig hard and take a deep breath... You're in riddim country.

Review: With releases on the likes of Euphonique's Subwoofah and Bou & Dutta's Diamond Audio to his name, Motiv continues to rocket up the ranks with this generous trove of rollers and groaners on the ever-on-point Liondub. Covering his full spectrum, the EP is one of the most comprehensive and heaviest showcases so far. Highlights include the tsunami tidal wave bass moan on "Vultures", the spacious introspective piano on "Unforgiven" and the jittering funk on the dense high pressure roller "Time Of Darkness". Motivation to get back on the controls; Motiv ain't messing around.

Review: Not to be confused with the Julia Roberts classic, the Sound of Nuusic isn't a Bavarian epic but instead a UK underground epic of compilation sized proportions, with a whole raft of underground talents offering up a diverse concoction of jungle flavours. With Conrad Subs making several appearances, his stand-out contribution is 'Leave Dem', with a funked-up loping introduction that's seriously smooth but which quickly devolves into a stuttering balance of breaks and reece bass action. There's wicked jungle contributions from Kumarachi and RMS as well as Sheffield upstart Charla Green, whose knock-down breaks carry some serious weight. This is a must-listen for anyone who likes their jungle music.

Review: Sub-liminal are one of those very prolific, very underground labels that tends to go unnoticed yet releases some absolute bangers. So, getting a whole compilation full of them from a variety of up and coming producers is only going to go one way - hard. The first tune - 'Iggy' - from Garry K & RV is an instant stand out, a wobbling riff of force and hurting energy, all tied up in a jump-up sized package. 'Vultures' by Zapya and MC Karter is another top-level cut, a skippy drum-line and menacing vocals sit above a fiercely minimal roller that clicks and clanks with satisfying precision. There are a bunch more excellent tunes on this release, so go check them out.

Prompt Demise - (4:24) 174 BPM Hot
Review: Manchester's Motiv makes his debut on Sub-Liminal with two deadly creepers. "Necroplasm" flutters with the most delightful wobble you could ever find wrapped around a roller. Slinky, low slung and coded with deep dark funk, it's tailored made for sly switch ups and double drops. "Prompt Demise" is equally stripped back but rather wobble, the bassline warps between two notes in the aggiest, uneasiest way possible. Proper.

Review: Bou & Dutta's Diamond Audio cuts through the noise with laser like charm on their latest V/A collection. A signature since the label's launch last year, this is their most supersized batch to date as it includes more fresh names and a full spectrum of underground styles; the footwork pace of Aesthetics opener "Questions", Bou's barking groaner "Frequencies", Jeopardize's matchless trippy funk stepper "Contemporary", Leaf's wonky woodblock knocks and freaky funk on "Watch It" and MelloDrama's hospitalizing space stepper "Thrill" are just some of the many album highlights. Shiny shiny.

Review: Young Manchester up-and-comer Motiv returns to the scene of the crime as he appears on the label where it all started for him in 2015: fellow local stable Subwoofah. Older, wiser, gullier, everything about this EP is a level up: "Suicide Thing" is all about amazing frazzled and loose off-beat bass grizzles, "Dead Reckoning" is pure bass venom while "Circumstances VIP" creatively flips a percussive texture into a full riff. Finally we have "Havoc" that packs a cool turn of the century Bristol punch to complete the set. Dark and delicious.

Review: The clue is in the title mate: Ruff Rollerz... Delivered by one of Manchester's most consistent and authentic jungle imprints since Sappo's Advisory. Epicentre grabs our crotch with an iced out riffer, Warhead gives us the finger with some heavily tribalized drum damage, Bou-affiliate Jamoh cooks up a low-swung waspy bassline-riddled Voltage-style shaker while newcomer Kovert Sounds juices up the rave machine and twists up the elements in quite an astonishing way. Finally Buckfast-swigging buccaneer Sl8r returns with another hardcore homage that switches so sexily into a percussive minimal drop you might need new trousers. Get on this now mate.

Review: Not a huge amount is known about Motiv besides previous releases on Audio Overload and Stickybass. But if his productions continue to assault our senses in the ways these Soul Deep tracks do, we're likely to know a lot more about him in the future. From the slinky fretless bass runs and sunset soul of "Trust Me" to the humming Bladerunner-style subs and glistening sunrise chimes of "Point Of View" by way of the hurricane pads of "Blue Hue" and the clipped harp funk of "Judas Kiss", each of these four tracks has something to say. Trustworthy.

Review: if the title doesn't say it all (and it really should) then the label's consistent ethos to discover fresh talent around the world certainly will. Soul Deep have been whittling this stick for years, bring us names who've been criminally overlooked before and bringing it all together with a usually blissful, bright and breezy signature. The LA label's first Unsung Heroes package since last November here we find Eschaton adding a "Horizons" style twist to "Forest Sunlight" we're in air piano heaven on Mosiac Theory's "Infinite" and we go loopy to the classic liquid dynamics of Rodrigo's "Improvisacion De Iluvia". And that's just three of 16 cuts on offer here. Soul Deep a truly spoiling us.
