Review: Bavarian hipster house hooligans Public Possession and their Serie compilation are here to combine music by label artists and friends, showcasing a broad spectrum of audio entertainment. Their brand spanking new Serie A features some great cuts: a trance inducing collage by Rhode & Brown entitled "Black Cardigan", a pop build up by label staples Tambien, Swede Mr. Tophat's homage to an almost forgotten communication medium (the answering machine!) and one damn heavy acid tool in the form of Obalski's "Achim" .
Review: The latest release on Tophat and Alfie's label shows two different sides to the Swedish pair's sound. "Bengan" is a rolling, drum-heavy affair that resounds to rich, organic drums and really sounds powerful on a big system. However, the more impressive track resides on the flip side. "SDIK Orchestra" is a beautiful, disco-sampling groove that manages the rare feat of borrowing rich strings from an unspecified 70s source without sounding cheesy or derivative. Lush and musical but also functional thanks to the pair deploying a snaking, pulsing groove underneath these samples, KVK 1000 is one of the strongest Karlovak releases to date.
Review: Swedish enfant terrible Mr Tophat breaks ranks with longtime collaborator (and Karlovak co-head) Art Alfie to fly solo on this new outing which, rather surprisingly, appears for the much lauded Life & Death imprint. The Junk Yard Connections main man presents "Time Lapse" taken from last year's album 'Dusk to Dawn' on Twilight Enterprise. At over 12 minutes long, the track is another Mr. Tophat masterclass in musical tension and narrative, featuring Noomi's seductive vocals throughout. Label boss DJ Tennis also steps up to add his own spin; a respectful rework which doesn't deviate too much from the original, just streamlines its groove for the dancefloor and accentuates all the track's euphoric and bittersweet elements.
Review: The typically packed Owain's Lagoon EP marks the final chapter in Crow Castle Cuts hugely enjoyable series which have touched on all corners of the techno and house spectrum. Luv Jam maintains his 100% appearance record on the series, opening up with "Turnipple" a sublime dusty house production that sets the tone nicely, with Schmitt Finger's "Bethsedia Bison" offering slightly more punch whilst still resolutely deep in its approach. Mr Tophat & Adam Stromstedt go star gazing on the expansive analogue cosmiche of "Tingeling," whilst "Valley Crucis Radio Party" demonstrates Cy in equally esoteric mood.
