Review: Murder He Wrote straight out of Manchester brings a second version to his self titled 'Murder He Wrote' collection of tracks and bangers. Where the first compilation took in some production highlights that dated back to 2016, part two brims with two brand spanking new originals in "Tweet" and "Frozen", while the six others have all been lifted from the guy's massive Roska Kicks & Snares back cat. It provides a step back from the vocal heavy tunes from the producer of late, with the MHW returning to his roots in sub-bass, drums and percussion fully designed for the club.

No You Don't - (3:50) 128 BPM
Up High - (3:49) 138 BPM Hot
Rave In (dub) - (3:16) 130 BPM
Review: Whenever Murder He Wrote lands on his home imprint of Rhythm Athletic, we know we are in for a good time, as he opens this new four-track with a seriously vibrant collaboration, seeing him join forces with the forward-thinking vocal prowess of Idris Miles for a dancefloor-ready singalong entitled 'Rave Out'. From here, moogy funky madness as 'No You Don't' first delivers a sultry sweep through original UK funky themes, followed by some wicked soundscaping work on 'Up High', a potent original fusing space-age pads with subtle breaks-driven drumlines. Finally, the title track's dub version in 'Rave In', a wonderful way to close off another fabulously designed collection from Murder He Wrote.

Cowbell Tool - (4:18) 128 BPM

Regrets (extended mix) - (4:13) 135 BPM
Review: It's always exciting to see Murder He Wrote return to his home imprint of Rhythm Athletic, with this latest five track offering once again flipping the script, diving down a more garage-influenced route. We open up with "Love (Makes Me)", a sumptuous jig through rolling 4x4 drums and high energy choral blocks, followed by both the silky vocal overlays of "Basement Groove", which sets a smoother tone, and of course the more funky-influenced percussive scuttles of "Cowbell Tool?. To close off, the theme of syncopation continues to expand as the shuffling rhythmic finesse of "Step Too" then gives us an even more jiggy-feeling, with the extended mix of "Regrets" then closing off the project with a tasty landing. Top-notch as per.

Basement Groove - (3:34) 128 BPM
Cowbell Tool - (4:18) 128 BPM Hot
Review: As always, Murder He Wrote has arrived in sensational form, unloading a powerful two-track display on his home imprint of Rhythm Athletic, exploring the smoother, more soothing side of funky house. We open up with the title track 'Basement Groove', a subby, subtle roller, jam-packed from start to finish with hypnotic synth keys, floaty pad texture and groovy, yet minimal drum work, packing a real punch from the jump. On the flip, a more syncopated feeling as 'Cowbell Tool', employs what it says on the tin and lets loose a vibrant infusion of percussive energy, flipping between moody sub pulses and heavy shaker action for a truly vibrant landing. Awesome work as per!

Plot Twist
Plot Twist - (3:49) 132 BPM Hot
Salsa - (3:35) 127 BPM
Errado Riddim - (3:22) 128 BPM
Review: Pure euphoria is set to run riot as Murder He Wrote returns once again to Rhythm Athletic for a palpable squeeze of funky breaks fusion. We begin our dive with 'Plot Twist', a sumptuous display of both fabulous old school rhythms and refreshing vocal sampling, culminating in a carnival-infused shack out of a breakdown, upping the energy levels almost instantly. From here, Murder's international influence shines through once again as the latin vocals and groovy percussive inputs of 'Salsa' take us down a much more South American road. Finally, more percussive precision as 'Errado Riddim' links together hard hitting sub designs with a constantly shifting undergrowth of rhythmic mastery, leading towards a super abstract breakdown then closes out the project with a very original feel! Exceptional as per.

In Too Deep VIP (feat Maddie Ellerby) - (3:48) 130 BPM
Review: It's always a pleasure to see new music landing from Murder He Wrote, one of the most versatile warriors in the UK funky and garage space. This latest offering sees him return to rhythm athletic for a gorgeous display of melodic mastery, delivering two thunderbolts. First up, 'Salsa' is a groove-inspiring twist up, taking bubbly vocal samples and intertwining them with squelchy bass energy and some highly energetic drum designs to match. On the flip side, Maddie Ellerby jumps on board for the official VIP of 'In Too Deep', giving the original track, which already packed a weighty punch, an extra dash of rhythmic colour, leading with tidy breaks samples and more of those fabulous sweeping pads. Lovely work!

Murder He Wrote & Am Jams - "Fade To Black" - (3:37) 128 BPM
Review: Murder He Wrote has been one of the UK's most exciting production talents in and around the world of underground dance music for the last few years, with this latest launch on his own Rhythm Atheltic imprint being a very tasty one indeed. We open up with the skippy drum textures and smooth, lounge-like harmonies of 'Drop', which sets a tidy tone for the project with it's laid-back rhythmic approach. This is then chased down by 'Operate', which ups the energy levels into the realms of UK funky with a blippy backdrop of bulbous bass hums and clinking percussion, before 'Come Thru' switches the flavours into a nostalgic breaksy drive, focussing on shimmering arpeggios and shuffling breakbeats. Finally the pace slows firstly for 'Stay Up', a grizzly bop, focussing on dissonant chords and GM synthesizers, before Am Jams joins the party for a euphoric outro track entitled 'Fade To Black', fusing together emotional strings, bubbling bass tones and scattered drum textures for one last wild throw of the dice.

Iso (riddim) - (3:20) 126 BPM Hot
As If We Never - (3:56) 128 BPM
Review: Whenever we see Murder He Wrote return to Rhythm Athletic, we know we are likely to be in for a very enjoyable time, with this three track experience being no different whatsoever. We kick off with the joyous harmonic freedom we experience within 'Told You So' as Murder once again displays a solid sense of UKG arrangement, layering floating pad textures with intricate melodic slides and a jaw-dropping bassline, giving this one a massive yes from us right from the off. He sets the high quality bar and sticks to it next as the much more UK funky inspired percussive sweeps and choppy snare drives of 'Iso' up the intensity of the project almost immediately, especially when coupled with that looming bassline below. From here, the glittering melodic switches and breaks-infused rhythms of 'As If We Never' then push the bar out of the stratosphere as Murder closes out one of the most impressive three trackers of 2022 so far!

Review: Next up from the man with the plan, also known as Murder He Wrote, he returns to his beloved Rhythm Atheltic for a sumptuous collection of originals with the first volume of 'Icymi'. Across seven outstanding originals, we are able to enjoy the full range of MHW's full production arsenal, kicking off with the beautiful drum designs and shifting soundscapes of 'All I Ever Needed' and chased up by the fabulous vocal additions on 'Air' from Maddie Ellerby. From here, 'Too Late' sees more top notch vocal work from Chrystal, who this time plays the lead voice in another pad-heavy excursion few future-inspired UK-funky sounds, before the rattling snares of 'Loss' and squelching bass textures of 'Watch The Tempo II' add a bit more instrumental edge. Finally, we finish on some syncopated successes as 'Cuica' allows us to explore the true rhythmic skills of Murder He Wrote's production range, followed by a top quality finale in 'Denied', a carnival inspired combo of lively drum expressions and Roxy Sections' awesome vocal lines. Incredible work as always from Murder He Wrote!

Review: Murder He Wrote, Chrystal, Rhythm Athletic? What more could you want from a new school UK funky release?! What a fabulous link up we find ourselves exploring with this one as MHW returns once again to his home imprint to deliver a potent two track experiment by the name of 'Too Late'. Part one sees him deploy a vast array of colourful percussive lines and softened melody, over which Chrystal's heavenly vocal layers sit just perfectly. On the flip side, Part two sees a much more underground sound deployed as shimmering chord notes are left to drift into an icy soundscape atop glittering rhythms and more of Chrystal's chilling vocals. Amazing work as per from one of the most consistent producers out there right now!

Review: Following on from an excellent single drop on RKS, Murder He Wrote is back at it again with a feature length LP, celebrating the future of UK funky across eight wavy originals. This is a real lesson in the breadth of UK funky, from the minimal, percussive lead sounds of 'Club Soda' and 'Watch The Tempo', to the beautiful vocals of both 'Lapse' alongside Roska and Maddy Ellerby and 'Say It Twice'. From here 'Stopwatch' gives us some experimental flavours, alongside the nostalgic piano lines of 'Smokes & Lazers' and crunchy LFO action of 'Watch the Tempo'. Finally, 'That Love' provides us with a euphoric drift between potent subs and colourful percussive patterns, rounding off an excellent selection indeed.

Not Today - (3:51) 134 BPM
Review: Next up on Rhythm Athletic, we see Murder He Wrote return to his incredibly rich run of form to deliver a stunning piece of experimental garage music, taking the title 'Not Today'. As far as compositional levels go, there aren't many people with a pallet as dense as MHW, who constantly finds himself unlocking unique pockets of energy within the different genres he works in, this new one being no exception to that as stunning layers of vocal sampling are deployed atop cloud-like synthesizer chords and charming drum skips. It's emotive and it's excellent, we just can't get enough!

Review: What a time it is for Murder He Wrote at the minute, who appears to be unable to put a foot wrong, judging by his recent releases at least. He here returns to Rhythm Athletic for a soulful helping of garage and funky goodness, kicking off with the stunning vocal collaboration with Jessica Wilde entitled 'Love', a track drenched in rhythmic flavour. Next, we leap into the more lofi arrangements and choppy drum structures of 'Loss', before finishing up the project with a look at 'Cui?-ca Riddim'. This one, despite being nearly impossible to say, is definitely one that needs to be heard, as MHE combines super smooth pad structures with lively funky drum work.

This latest addition to their 'Funky & Garage' series, kicks off with an absolute belter from Murder He Wrote entitled 'Honey Riddim', which features funky flavours and a hard hitting vocal appearance from Snowy. Following this, Killjoy continues with the funky theme with some hard hitting rhythmic movements on 'Disturbance', before Smokey Bubblin' B injects a lashing of garage flavour into proceedings with the stripped back design of 'Brock Out'. Review: For this very exciting six track selection, the team at Top Billin have arranged a tight collection of the weird and undefinable, yet somehow manage to release a cohesive body of work at the same time. Firstly, the booming bass drums, choppy breaks and subby leads of TRDV's 'Deadlines' take the lead, followed by a funky garage fusion by the name of 'Submarine's from Murder He Wrote. Next up, we move further into the stripped back garage themes as Tony Quatro unleashes the lethal subs of 'September' before the bouncy carnival drum work of Pl4net Dust's 'Daebak' is let loose. The flavours then take another unexpected turn as a Rodigan vocal sample gives way to a moody breaks driven original from Garneau entitled 'WH1', before funky feels of Niklavz round everything up smartly in 'Soundboy Notifications'.

Here we see one of the genre's leading lights in Murder He Wrote put forward a flavoursome four tracker, courtesy of Rhythm Athletic. We begin our journey on this one on a vibrant collaboration with Maddie Ellerby by the name of 'Expectations', which lays the blueprints for the rest of the EP with its classic funky flavours. Played by: Roska, Kastle
Review: Every badman's favourite scholar Murder He Wrote returns to Roska's ever ready Kicks & Snares with some of his most striking numbers to date. "Nasty" swings with a loose snare UK funky arrangement, sticky Bovril bass and a subtly sultry vocal before he suddenly hurls us into a near-orgasmic breakdown then sends us off on our (nasty) ways. "Game Over" hits with a dreamier twang as shimmering chords warm snugly around a classic break and pushed 4/4. Need a little more grit? Crunch down on the heavier gnarled-bass VIP. Absolute regicide!

Murder He Wrote feat Maddie Ellerby - "Still Crooked" (Numan remix) - (4:51) 127 BPM
Review: Murder He Wrote might not have that many bangers to his name in terms of volume, but the fledgling producer can sure conjure up some bass power with his very own 'bass house' moves. "Still Crooked" features Maddie Ellerby on the vocals in what turns out to be a delicious pseudo garage cut with Ibizian kind of flavours, while "Sirens" is darker, nastier and more tribal - not to mention even a little bit more on the acidic side! We're also very much into the "DS9 Riddim" for its subtle swings of jungle, but it's Murder He Wrote's general style and outlook that we're really starting to appreciate. Watch out for this guy on the bass charts!
