Review: Roam Recordings was set up by Jason 'JP Soul' Peters and Jeni 'Jeniluv' Erickson in 2001, and has since put out records by the likes of Demarkus Lewis, Rhythm Plate, Hesohi and Dino Lenny. For their 100th release/20th anniversary, though, they've avoided the obvious 'best of' route and instead serve up 21 brand new tracks coming from a mix of familiar names (Emperor Machine, DJ Rocca, Tronik Youth) and newcomers. The overall vibe leans towards cosmic and Italo disco, but that's a very broad-brush picture - there are tracks here that could, variously, be filed equally well under house, techno, electro, Balearica or prog. Psychedelic electronic disco at its best.

Review: Parma shrooms brothers the Mushrooms Project make their way to Roam Recordings with four original tracks of sci-fi, spaghetti western funk and deep Balearics. Known for sessions on Leng, Rare Wiri and the like, Mushrooms Project turns up the psychedelic oddities on Hazara. Be they the desert sky sessions of the title-track to more experimental disco percussion jams in "Dirty Dune", the pair hold down something undeniably exotic. With acoustic trablisms next to space age synths coming through in "Pitfalls", get your deep and arpeggiated basslines, space pop soundscapes and minimal trance from "Liku".

Review: Mushrooms Project has a long track record of delivering heady, gently psychedelic fare, with a trademark sound that hazily blurs the boundaries between slo-mo house, Balearic disco chuggers and bespoke dub disco that comes smothered in mind-altering guitar textures. 'Old Skool Dreamer', their first outing for Rare Wiri, is another slow-motion affair, with haunting flutes, evocative field recordings, sustained chords, bubby synth bass, exotic vocal snippets and subtle acid lines wrapping around a chugging groove. Paper Street Soul re-imagine it as a breezy, sunset-ready shuffler that's as positive as it is loved-up, while the 'Bonus Beat' version a spacey, stripped-back dub that wisely emphasizes the original version's bubbly acid motifs. Bonus cut 'A Wicked Draw', meanwhile, is another drowsy and percussion-laden downtempo house number.

Review: To celebrate their eighth birthday, Play Pal Music has delved deep into its archives and put together two retrospectives of back catalogue tracks, "that sound as fresh now as when they were released". There's plenty to savour on this second volume, from the dubby, dark Italo-disco throb of Alda's 'Night Wolf', and the atmospheric, slow-motion chug of 'Cosmic' by Did Virgo, to the breaks-goes-new wave sleaziness of Fabio Me Llaman Soltero's strangely exotic 'Morena, Moreno (TYU REemix)' and the psych-rock-goes-kraut-disco hedonism of Mushrooms Project's 'Sake'. Throw in similarly impressive outings from Monoblock & PSLKTR (as remixed by Curses), Teniente Castillo and Vox Low, and you have a genuinely essential collection of inspired, off-kilter cuts.

Review: After 12 years in the game, Spanish nu-disco stable have reached the 100-release milestone, and they're celebrating with an imaginatively titled compilation packing eight brand new tracks that have been handpicked by label boss Rayko. Obviously, with eight tracks from as many artists there's a fair degree of stylistic variety on offer, but the emphasis generally is on heavily electronic grooves - sometimes veering into Balearic/coffee table pastures, sometimes served with a darker, more leftfield twist. It's really more of a home listening album than a collection of club cuts, but for dancefloor purposes start with the contributions from Ilya Santana and Sauco...

Review: Founded in 2012, Madrid's Play Pal Music specialise in "new wave, post-punk, synths & guitars, fat bass, nu-disco, leftfield and anything in-between". That gives you an idea what to expect from this 15-track label compilation, as crossover styles like the punk-funk of late 70s New York, the new beat of late 80s Belgium and even the electro stylings of mid-00s Hoxton get thrown into the blender and mashed up into one gloriously sleazy, neon-lit, leather-clad dancefloor showdown that manages to be both a retro/nostalgic delight and forward-thinking at the same time. If 'Drop The Deal' or 'Walk The Night' are in your classics box, this is one to check for sure.

Review: Since launching at the dawn of the decade, Paul 'Mudd' Murphy and Simon Purnell's Leng label has risen to become one of the most consistent nu-disco labels around, with a trademark style that cannily combines chugging grooves, dub disco rhythms, and clear West Coast psychedelic rock and contemporary Balearica influences. It's for this reason that this celebratory 10th birthday compilation is such a treat. The multitude of highlights includes, but is no way limited to, the kaleidoscopic nu-disco rush of Pete Herbert's vintage remix of Apiento's 'She Walks', the kraut-folk-goes dub insanity of the Idjut Boys remix of Mountaineer's 'Golden Chalk', the intense drug-chug of Mudd's 'Slow Rave' mix of Tiago's 'The Source', and the late-night exotica of 'Luna' by Turkish producer Ali Kuru.

Review: More sleazy, mid-tempo and laid-back percussive styles courtesy of The Mushrooms Project - it's what they're becoming known for really. They are back on London's Leng with a sound that immediately resonated with rising stars and newly signed label mates Earthboogie. "Dubby Bolas"is actually from the Italian duo's 2016 LP Rivea Corymbosa. It really excited Earthboogie - who turned it into cosmic/balearic tinged ambient house journey. Equally, the Mushrooms were fans of the Afro disco sound that the Londoners displayed on their debut track "Route Ten To Interzone" which they have now respectfully reworked featuring a little bit more dancefloor dynamic.

Review: Ah yes, it's the unstoppable Mushroom Project back to dominate our nu-disco charts with their inimitable swagger, and it's the Leng label that welcomes the back with open arms. To be honest, we're overjoyed to see them again, especially if they're bringing this many tunes along with them - all marvellously diverse and rich in harmonic texture. "Rivea Corymbosa" and "Rio Paraiba Do Sol", for example, are simply two sublime slice of balearic funk, while other tunes like "Dirty Bolas" veer onto more beat-laden territories. Tribalism and funk are very much at the core of all these tunes, and while it's all too easy to go for the big names and forget those riding below the radar, this release by Mushroom Project is both some of the best music these guys have put out, and makes for one of the best EPs on our charts this week. Warmly recommended.

Review: Two years on from the release of Mushroom Project's Sake EP, Play Pal Music has decided to get it remixed, putting out the resultant versions over a pair of digital releases. Tici Taci boss Duncan Gray kicks things off with a wonderfully chugging, borderline cosmic disco take on "Sake", before upping the ante on his rockin', guitar-laden Full Tempo Remix. Vox Low go all gothic disco on their version of "Yess", while Mijo turns "Wonky" into a thumping electrofunk-meets-house slammer. As if that wasn't enough to get the juices flowing, Mushrooms Project also offers up a new track - the delightfully dreamy, otherworldly "Tomorrow & Tomorrow".

Review: Although their name sounds like the kind of faux-scientific title students might use to legitimise wayward experiments with hallucinogenic fungi, Mushrooms Project are in fact bona fide nu-disco veterans. "16823" recently appeared on their Undergrass LP and now it gets its own pair of remixes. Brennan Green goes all linear and shimmering Balearic electro-disco on us, while Mudd go all analogue - delivering six minutes of restrained disco rock bliss.

Review: Italy's Mushrooms Project are now entering the realms of nu-disco veterans, having treated nu-disco enthusiasts to a huge array of psychedelic grooves since back in 2009. Here they continue their obsession with the dark, twisted and mysterious, dropping a trio of decidedly cosmic jams. The kaleidoscopic, clandestine grooves and fuzzy guitars of the delay-laden "Yesss!" set the tone, before "Wonky" delivers a full-strength slab of cowbell-laden cosmic disco fuzziness - all dark Italo synths, woozy melodies and saucer-eyed percussion. The title track goes even further, building the action around off-kilter psychedelic rock riffs and relentless, Alan Parsons Project style synths. Like fine sake, Mushrooms Project just get better with age.
