Review: In manner of "New Blood, "Critical Sound" and so on, Horizons comes up with a various artists compilation showcasing the fresh new up-and-coming talent on their label. Whilst some names such as June Miller, Cause 4 Concern, Data and Spinline, others may not. Highlights from across the selection include Cause 4 Concerns murky, moody roller "Under Forever", Amoss' "We All Grow" with its politicized lyrics and warping dubbed out b-line and fidgety Rockwell-esque edits and Data's opening cut "Formless", with its clicking beats and growling b-line. A nice taster of what we can expect from Horizons in the future.

Review: Metalheadz are on devastating form right now and they happily slam down the gauntlet with this superb EP. Continuing in the same vein as the previous "Genesis" instalments they present a selection of fresh, upfront drum and bass which simply refuses to adhere to any template. The much heralded Need For Mirrors kick proceedings off with the deadly "Lofar" which sets the tone perfectly before Dutch maestro Nymfo follows with the dark stepper "Conscious Minds". Mikal's "Epic" is the standout track here, a pure streamlined aural assault and finally Critical Impact & Komonazmuk wheel out the Amens on the seriously heavy "Translation".

Review: The Playaz camp seem to be branching out of the jump up bracket of late and this release from underground originators, Need For Mirrors, spearheads this new direction for the label. Stripping things back to the bare essentials, NFM present a tough little beast in "Vimana" with its rough drums, booming bass and tenacious stepping pattern this is a proper heads down, hoods up late night killer. The accompanying cut is just as nasty; "Snubnose" boasts some awesome sub bass action with razor sharp snares and light percussion, it grabs the attention but is curiously calming too. An interesting release here, make no mistake.

Review: Playaz just keep on bringing the mayhem and the fourth installment of the already epic "Flavours EP" is no exception to the rule. Compiled of six superlative bangers from artists as wide ranging as Majistrate, Shimah, Optiv & BTK, Annix, Potential Badboy and Need For Mirrors, variety is the spice of life here. First up is "Losing Control (feat. Alicia King)" by Majistrate which ups the raw, rugged jump up flavours with jarring metallic synth work; next we have Shimah's "Shadow Of The Ba" with its uplifting trance-like synths and tense, ticking patterns. Then onwards through Optiv & BTK's "Feelings" it's a neuro-infused ruckus until we reach Annix's "Late Maoeuvere". Potential Badboy is up to his usual tricks in his VIP of "Sound A Sound" before Need For Mirrors bring the EP to a classy close in the rolling "Albatross".

Review: We probably don't need to convince you of the quality of this LP, since Horizons have been calmly showing everyone how things should be done with their Dreamthief series since 2008. Pitching together to create one mindblowing collection of tunes, the likes of Gremlinz, Nitri & Release, Need For Mirrors, NickBee and Utopia Music's own Mako bring the vibes in strong. Need we go on? Not really. Should you buy this album? Almost definitely.

Review: Bringing their Zoltar sound back to Horizons alongside ex-partner in crime HLZ for this particularly dark slice of D&B, NFM continue to step up. Starting as they mean to go on, "Rotor" is a cold techy stepper that pushes minimal to breaking point with humming basic bass and the whirr of a lonely hi-hat. "Pantheon" plays far more to the dancefloor, with a heavy stomping beat and addictive-as-hell bassline. "Actress" is a deep and raging old-school roller that plunges through creepy atmospherics and final track "Broadwalk" is the payoff for all the upfront skanking crew junkies who will forever lust after a classic NFM bassline. Don't worry - it's all here for you. Take a hit.

Review: Enter Bailey for V Music to show the world what the face of D&B looks like as we approach the end of the beginning of 2014. Featuring 24 tracks of the hardest-hitting jungle drum & bass the scene has to offer, this adroitly named compilation is an ode to the more stripped back, raw sounds of D&B's past - all with the unmistakable edge of 2014 production power. Take note - if bass ain't your thing, move it along. There's nothing for you to see here.

Review: We're only waist deep into 2014 but we'll say this: NFM's proliferation this year deserves some serious medals. Not because of quantity. Not because they've appeared on such a wide range of well-respected labels. But because the quality is of an unnerving consistency that there are rumours Joe and Emilio are actually Terminator-like machines. Each of the five cuts on offer here are perfect examples: from the pneumatic steps and throaty gurgles of "Oscillator 3" to the matchless warped wobbles of "She" to the seat-of-pants speedway sub rumbles of the decade-bounding "Pedestrian" , this is the duo at their most demonstratively sharp, timeless and produced with pristine roughness. We'd complete this "Food" salute with a gambit about the entire EP being tasty, but D&B like this commands so much more than silly word play. Unarguably essential.
