Review: Javi Frias's Madrid-based house and disco label Night Shift bring us a re-edits EP from San Diego's Alberto de Santiago, AKA Never Dull - and it has to be said he's dug admirably deep for inspiration, because we can only identify the source material for two of the four tracks on offer. The vocoder-sporting 'Whatever U Want' draws on Lace's 'Can't Play Around', a Paradise Garage staple from 1982, while 'Give A Little' is a rework of Peaches & Herb's 1980 roller disco anthem 'Funtime'. 'Cool Love' and 'Want My Love' have us beat, but expect similarly lavish, soulful disco/boogie stylings

Taking you from lounging by the pool under the clear blue sky to sunset house, this is perfect for any laidback occasion. an essential summer soundtrack that features key artists such as: Dutch trio Kraak & Smaak who present the sensual lo-slung disco of "Don't Want This To Be Over" (Jean Tonique Remix), U.S. artists David Marston & Life On Planets who team up for the evocative deep house groove of "Contortions" feat. Hannah Noelle & Dan Izco, and Berlin-by-way-of Vancouver artist Jayda G who serves up the hypnotic Detroit vibe of "Rishikesh". Elsewhere, the ever reliable Butch delivers the main room dancefloor drama of "Lale", and Brazilian techno legend Renato Cohen makes his comeback on "Sweet Nightmare" but makes a departure from what we're used to on this funky house anthem. Review: As the year comes to a close, labels are naturally offering up celebratory compilations showcasing their strongest releases of 2019. The latest comes from Midnight Riot, a prolific imprint that rarely fails to serve up the fieriest contemporary disco heat. As you'd expect, the 26-track selection includes a blend of superb original productions (the nu-disco soul warmth of Jack Tyson Charles' "Glory", Alton Edwards sweaty, synth-bass propelled boogie-house gem "I Just Wanna Spend Time With You", the swirling disco headiness of Arthur Baker's "Reachin' Out") and re-edits/reworks (Dr Packer's gospel boogie revision "The Power", C Da Afro's disco-funk slammer "Party Purpose" and the suitably celebratory "Boogie On Time" by Ladies On Mars). As you'd expect, the quality threshold remains impressively high throughout.
Review: We can confirm that the latest EP from San Diego's Never Dull is definitely not dull. In fact, the three re-edits on show on this Midnight Riot label debut are genuinely rather fun. The San Diego artist hits the ground running on EP opener "Easy Love", delivering a fine rearrangement of a glassy-eyed early '80s jam full of dewy-eyed male and female vocals, squelchy synth bass and classic disco style orchestration. "Too Blind To See" is a gently housed-up take on a smooth '80s soul classic, while "The Fire Goes On" is a confident strut through disco funk territory laden with punchy horn blasts, ear catching bass guitar and chiming lead lines.
Review: If you're in the mood for some sun-kissed sounds tailor-made for sun-kissed pool parties and lazy afternoons on the beach, Future Disco's latest compilation could be just the ticket. You get 18 unmixed tracks for your DJ sets, plus a non-stop mix to help while away the hours while your skin turns a lovely shade of red. Musically, it's a mixture of baggy Balearic disco-pop (Luxxury, Stavanger Hunt and Future Disco's "Another Lifetime", dub disco influenced grooves (Soulwax remixing Tendts, the low slung strut of Lowheads' "Seven Afro Mood"), dreamy deep house sexiness (Henrik Vilard, Moon Boots) and evocative nu-disco haziness (the Italo-influenced thrust of 16BL's ace "You Are High"). More importantly, the quality threshold remains high throughout.
Review: You need to know two things about Never Dull. Firstly, his real name is Alberto Santiago, and he hails from his near-namesake city of San Diego. And secondly, he specialises in creating old school-tastic funk, soul and disco tracks that sound like they surely HAVE to be re-edits, but are in fact original productions. The four cuts here certainly had us fooled, so if it's authentically 70s sounding grooves you're after but you'd like to avoid the obvious and over-played then this EP is a must-check, with 'Since I've Been Gone' and 'All The Way' the standouts.
