Review: Volume 4 of the Make Up series is another doozy and this one brings together accomplished house heads Camille, Chez Damier and Nico Lahs in a celebration of underground disco classics "through the lens of 60's and 70's underground comix." Similar to these rebellious reads, the tracks on this release carved their niche with purists seeking distinct and thrilling sounds. Camille's contributions include Mystic Pleasure's 'Back Door (Getting Down)' and Cold Fire's 'Badder Than Bad' which both bring soulful melodies and infectious rhythms, Chez Damier adds Fascination's 'Shine My Love' and Bileo's 'You Can Win' with shimmering vocals and funky basslines and together, they make for an exhilarating mix of disco brilliance.

Review: Buoyed by a string of highly regarded releases as Cosmic Garden and NLXLB, Cosmic Rhythm label founder Nicola Laporrchio dusts off his long-running Nico Lahs alias for a typically inspired Quintessentials label debut. He hits the ground running with the heads-down drive of 'Keep On Groovin'' where a metronomic analogue bassline, bleeping melodies and layered percussion catch the ear, before breaking up the beats on the jazzy deep house warmth of 'Freakin' Over on side B, 'Come Get Me' is an even deeper, classically dreamy affair with more than a few nods to the great Larry Heard, while title track 'Easy Loving You' is a languid, sample-rich shuffle that seems to make use of musical elements lifted from a groovy and organic dancefloor treat.

Review: While Nicola Laporchio has received plenty of plaudits for his work as Cosmic Garden and NLXLB, he's released far more records of note - and over a longer period - as Nico Lahs. He recently delivered two terrific EPs under the alias on Omena, and here makes his debut on Roy Davis Jr and Odell Braziel's Underground Therapy Muzik stable. The Bari-based producer hits the ground running on pleasingly percussive opener 'Bossa Rhythm' - a gorgeous bossa-house affair featuring some lovely Fender Rhodes solos - before opting for a more 'pots and pans' jazz-house sound on 'Holy Day'. 'Moonlight' is a fine slab of woozy, sub-heavy deep house haziness, while 'Sunday Morning' is a loopy, jammed-out, sample-heavy deep house shuffler.

Review: The superb Make Up series hits release number three and in doing so heads back to the trio that started it all. The combination of Chicago house originator Chez Damier, Adeen label head Camille and Italian talent Nico Lahs is a dream team indeed and they serve up some crucial edits that cover a wide sonic range. There are standout cuts such as 'Dance to Freedom' and 'African Bump' while jazzy grooves define 'Sunny' and 'Changes' is all about getting that dance floor vibing. This is another in-the-know musical voyage from this crew.

Review: Nicola Loporchio AKA Nico Lahs hails from Bari in Italy and has a release CV that stretches back to 2009 and includes releases on Ovum, Poker Flat, Local Talk and Last Night On Earth. This four-tracker for Sweden's Omena straddles the line between deep and progressive/tribal house, with atmospheric synths much in evidence throughout: 'Dancing Stars' is a groovy lil' drifter, 'Ascension' has Afro/tribal flourishes and 'Astral Plan(t)s' packs some wigged-out sci-fi squiggles, but the standout for yours truly is closer 'Love Sets You Free', a dreamy late-night jam underpinned by a surprisingly funky bottom end.

Review: Bari-based Nico Lahs has proved to be something of a musical chameleon over the last 10 years, subtly shifting between various strains of house and techno whilst striving to develop his own trademark style. Got Me Coming Back, his Delusions of Grandeur debut, is equally as diverse, with the producer utilising the EP format to showcase the breadth and depth of his club-ready cuts. He begins with the warming chords, thickset grooves, spacey electronics and fluid jazz-funk bass of 'Got Me Coming Back', before adding sweet melodic flourishes to a bustling, cymbal-heavy house beat on 'Deep Down in My Soul'. Shirts-off peak-time pump is provided by via the retro-futurist deep house throb of 'Your Sweet Lovin', while 'How's Life' is a jazzier and sunnier slab of sample-house goodness.

Review: Legendary German imprint Poker Flat continues into 2021 with the latest in their B Sides compilation series. As it says on the tin, Chapter Six presents the best of their back catalogue between releases numbered 126 to 150 - which were around 2012 - 2013. Starting off with label boss Steve Bug's 'Tell Me Why" taken from his album Noir, Alex Niggemann's expressive piece of mood music entitled 'Tangram" (The Deep End) from back in 2013, the sexy late night shuffle of Mihai Popoviciu's "Here", Carlos Sanchez getting deep down and dirty on the afterhours bounce of "Conclution", Hamburg heroes Kollektiv Turmstrasse lending a typically emotive and bittersweet vibe to their rework of Daniel Dexter's "Birds" and who could forget the low slung swagger of "Facebook" by Diynamic chief HOSH.

Review: The Poker Flat filter sifts through its immense catalogue to pull up a fresh new 'best of' chapter. Tracks come Boris Dlugosch, Marco Resmann and Steve Bug to Vince Watson, TJ Kong and Alex Niggemann all deliver the goods, be burning italo basslines, techier dub techno and 80s synth to percussive melodies and other minimal actions. Simon Garcia goes deeper into tripper arpeggio mode with "Cavern" while the words of Theo Parrish feature in the Juno-106 house sounds of "Lectures". Get some extended minimal players from Mihai Popoviciu in "Call Me", with Detroit and Chichagoan sounds further permeating the compilation in "My Side". Dope.
